USGS Small-scale Dataset - Global Map: 100-Meter Resolution Elevation of Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands 201403 BIL
Published By U.S. Geological Survey, Department of the Interior
Issued over 9 years ago
Summary
Description
This map layer includes Global Map data showing elevation for Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands, in meters relative to mean sea level. The data are a modified version of the National Atlas of the United States 100-Meter Resolution Elevation of Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands. To comply with Global Map requirements, the National Atlas 100-meter Elevation data were reprojected to WGS84 Geographics, the values for oceans and non-U.S. land were adjusted, and the data were saved in Band-Interleaved-by-Line (BIL) format. The National Atlas source elevation data were derived from National Elevation Dataset (NED) data, http://ned.usgs.gov, and show the terrain at a resolution of 100 meters. The NED is a raster product assembled by the U.S. Geological Survey, designed to provide national elevation data in a seamless form with a consistent datum, elevation unit, and projection. Data corrections made in the NED assembly process minimize artifacts, permit edge matching, and fill sliver areas of missing data. The NED is updated on a bi-monthly basis.

Watershed Sciences, Inc. collected Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) data for the Sandy River study area in collaboration with the USDA Forest Service. The areas for LiDAR collection have been designed as part of a collaborative effort of state, federal, and local agencies in order to meet a wide range of project goals. This LiDAR data set was collected Sept 29 - Oct 1, 2008 and falls mainly in Multnomah County, but also in small portions of Clark and Clackamas Counties, Oregon. This data set consists of bare earth and unclassified points. The average pulse density is 8.04 pulses per square meter over terrestrial surfaces. The area of interest (AOI) encompasses approximately 34,021 acres and the total area flown (TAF) covers 35,873 acres. The TAF acreage is greater than the original AOI acreage due to buffering and flight planning optimization. In some areas of heavy vegetation or forest cover, there may be relatively few ground points in the LiDAR data. Elevation values for open water surfaces are not valid elevation values because few lidar points are returned from water surfaces. Lidar intensity values were also collected.

This point file displays the 1543 accuracy assessment (AA) points visited in the summer of 2005 as part of the vegetation mapping project. The points were randomly selected, stratified by the map units used for vegetation mapping and further screened so as not to fall on inaccessible isolated mesa tops or vertical canyon walls. The coordinates were uploaded to Trimble and Garmin hand-held GPS receivers so that ecologists could navigate to them in the field. Some AA points fell on ecotones and two sets of data were recorded on the evenly-split sites. AA points that fell along polygon edges sometimes did not represent the entire polygon well and some AA points fell on small patches of vegetation that were different than the community in the larger polygon. Field photos are associated with each plot.

Candidate hydrazine alternatives have been developed for spacecraft propulsion. The U.S. Air Force AF-M315E and the Swedish ammonium dinitramide propellants have received the most attention, while ammonium dinitramide propellants are a possible contender. While greenness relates to environmentally benign and relative toxicity, neither of these propellants is completely “nontoxic” or completely safe; if their energetic nature was not inherent they would not be used as monopropellants. This is particularly important with ammonium dinitramide (ADN) and hydrazinum nitroformate (HNF) propellants, which ESA and the EU has favored while the U.S. Air Force has focused on AF-M315E and the U.S. Army has investigated hydroxylammonium nitrate/triethanolammonium nitrate (HAN/TEAN; XM-46) propellants. The first phase of the project’s focus will be to evaluate detection and decontamination methods for these propellants. The second phase examined candidate materials for use in AF-M315E propulsion systems. Pairs of representative alloys, passivated and native, were immersed in AF-M315E at 71 °C for 31 d, fluid samples were periodically characterized and post-test materials and fluids were finally characterized. Typical corrosion studies use only the total time of immersion; this study also obtained interim data points.

The device consists of a graphene piece deposited on a Si substrate with certain thickness of insulation layer. In our initial experiment, constant radiation was applied above the GFET and device conductance was measured before and after the radiation. We observed an increase of the device mobility (transconductance) after the radiation. This demonstration showed that graphene is radiation hard and its conductance changes with radiation. With the IRAD fund, we will continue exploring sensing mechanisms in GFETs and identify optimal absorber substrates and device geometries to improve radiation detection speed, sensitivity, and energy resolution of our GFET-RS devices.

A joint venture involving the National Atlas programs in Canada (Natural Resources Canada), Mexico (Instituto Nacional de EstadÃstica GeografÃa e Informática), and the United States (U.S. Geological Survey), as well as the North American Commission for Environmental Co-operation, has led to the release (June 2004) of several new products: an updated paper map of North America, and its associated geospatial data sets and their metadata. These data sets are available online from each of the partner countries both for visualization and download. The North American Atlas data are standardized geospatial data sets at 1:10,000,000 scale. A variety of basic data layers (e.g. roads, railroads, populated places, political boundaries, hydrography, bathymetry, sea ice and glaciers) have been integrated so that their relative positions are correct. This collection of data sets forms a base with which other North American thematic data may be integrated. Any data outside of Canada, Mexico, and the United States of America included in the North American Atlas data sets is strictly to complete the context of the data. The North American Atlas - Glaciers data set shows areas of permanent ice found on the North America landmass including Greenland, and also shows areas of land found within glaciers. No distinction is made between major glaciers, ice fields, and the Greenland ice cap. The only permanent ice shown on land areas outside of North America and Greenland is on Iceland.
