Description

The Digital Flood Insurance Rate Map (DFIRM) Database depicts flood risk information and supporting data used to develop the risk data. The primary risk classifications used are the 1-percent-annual-chance flood event, the 0.2-percent-annual- chance flood event, and areas of minimal flood risk. The DFIRM Database is derived from Flood Insurance Studies (FISs), previously published Flood Insurance Rate Maps (FIRMs), flood hazard analyses performed in support of the FISs and FIRMs, and new mapping data, where available. The FISs and FIRMs are published by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA).The file is georeferenced to earth's surface using the Lambert Conformal Conic projection and the Louisiana State Plane NAD83 South Zone coordinate system. The specifications for the horizontal control of Base Map data files are consistent with those required for mapping at a scale of 1:24,000

Description

Water levels in 93 wells completed in the Wood River Valley aquifer system were measured during October 22–24, 2012; these wells are part of a network established by the U.S. Geological Survey in 2006. Maps of the October 2012 water-table altitude in the unconfined aquifer and the potentiometric-surface altitude of the confined aquifer have similar topology to those on maps of October 2006 conditions. Between October 2006 and October 2012, water-table altitude in the unconfined aquifer rose by as much as 1.86 feet in 6 wells and declined by as much as 14.28 feet in 77 wells; average decline was 2.9 feet. From October 2006 to October 2012, the potentiometric-surface altitude in 10 wells completed in the confined aquifer declined between 0.12 and 20.50 feet; average decline was 6.8 feet.

Description

It is well established that fish protein and oil are nutritious and valuable feed commodities (Deuel et al. 1946, Folador 2006). These commodities are not recovered from waste produced from fish processed for human consumption in many areas of the world due to a lack of appropriate technology. A major unused resource is fish processing waste in Alaska. In the salmon canneries of Alaska, salmon production has traditionally been based on standard bone-in and skin-on canned products. The development of new markets is increasing the demand for more skinless/boneless (SB) frozen and canned salmon products. Demand for these new convenience salmon products has resulted in a substantial increase in the volume of material in waste streams discharged from the plants. Whereas traditional canned salmon results in waste of approximately 35% to 40% of the round fish weight, these new processes result in a waste of 50% and higher of the landed round weight due to more skin, trim, and frames in the waste stream. The increase of waste material from the expansion of SB production is estimated to add 20,000 to 30,000 t of salmon waste in the next three years. This is in addition to an annual average of over 100,000 t of salmon processing waste produced annually in Alaska. This added waste burden increases problems of meeting discharge limitations set by Environmental Protection Agency regulations in many salmon processing areas in Alaska. The problem of remotely located processing plants, the brevity of the canning seasons, and the expense of waste processing technology have favored the current practices, i.e., grind and discharge to local waters. Recent developments in international commodities markets have seen prices for fish meals and oils increase substantially, which makes the case for utilizing Alaska's salmon processing waste as a recoverable commodity. As a result, there is a need to develop new process technologies for capturing salmon processing waste and turning it into profitable, high quality fish meal, oil, and specialty products for the marketplace. This project is a continuation of previous research based on the modified silage process at the Northwest Fisheries Science Center (NWFSC) (Stone and Hardy 1986, Nicklason et al. 2003). Other workers have demonstrated that preservation and ensiling of fish waste can be controlled with temperature, acid type, and acid concentration (Tatterson 1982, Lo et al. 1993). The objectives of the Montlake process are threefold: (1) Minimize use of imported chemicals. (2) Support short term storage with limited autolysis. (3) Design a process that is economical, using existing technology. Proximate Analyses of montlake meal prepared from pink salmon, sablefish, and coho salmon

Description

The MODerate-resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) BRDF/Albedo Model Parameters product (MCD43A1) contains three-dimensional (3D) data sets providing users with weighting parameters for the models used to derive the Albedo and BRDF products (MCD43A3 and MCD43A4). The models support the spatial relationship and parameter characterization best describing the differences in radiation due to the scattering (anisotropy) of each pixel, relying on multi-date, atmospherically corrected, cloud-cleared input data measured over 16-day periods. Both Terra and Aqua data are used in the generation of this product, providing the highest probability for quality input data and designating it as an MCD, meaning Combined, product. Information on each individual MODIS Platform/Product are available at: https://lpdaac.usgs.gov/lpdaac/products/modis_products_table

Description

Solar sails as a propulsive device have several potential applications: providing access to previously inaccessible orbits, longer mission times, and increased payload mass. NASA has identified a need for better simulations of sail-enabled missions to reduce the cost and risk associated with sail development. PSS has a unique capability due to our previous work in sail modeling and high-fidelity simulation. The simulation must model maneuvering, navigation, trajectory control, propulsive performance, and operations, which represents wide range of capability. PSS meets this capability for solar sails by integrating sail shape models for disturbance computation with attitude and orbit dynamics, first in MATLAB and then in the proposed C++ real-time simulation. The real-time simulation will provide users the ability to duplicate their MATLAB models in an environment to which they can attach hardware and flight software. This innovative package will support mission development from the earliest stages of analysis through flight operations. The same solar sail simulation will be used for mission planning and operator training. ATK Space Systems will consult on the project and develop refined models of propulsive performance of real sails, considering wrinkles, crinkles, billow, and manufacturing-induced asymmetries.

Before the Affordable Care Act, Americans with pre-existing conditions who did not receive health coverage through their employers had few affordable options to get the care they needed. In most States, insurance companies could refuse to sell them coverage, charge exorbitant premiums, or offer them coverage that excluded benefits for their health conditions. The result has been tens of thousands of Americans with serious health conditions like cancer and heart disease who have been unable to afford health insurance or to pay out of pocket for their own medical care.

Description

Lithium has been proposed as an attractive metal propellant for advanced nuclear-electric propulsion missions in the outer solar system. While it is low molecular weight for high Isp and had high conductivity for MPD acceleration, it is also corrosive to most metals, leeches elements from alloys, destroys dielectric insulators and is heavily prone to contamination. Porous metal electrodes, valves and plumbing can become clogged by lithium oxide, nitride and carbide formation and deposits. Impurities in liquid lithium also enhance metal flaking and tankage erosion. The design of a lithium purification and filtration system using highly porous gettering materials, hot/cold trap filters, gas desorption, and liquid metal pumping is proposed in this Phase I research effort. The goal is to eliminate clogging and contamination effects for long-duration space missions >5 years where buildup can be a show-stopper. Exerimental testing and validation of material configurations will lead to a prototype lithium purification and flitration system in Phase II.

Description

To solve the problem of autonomous navigation on small satellite platforms less than 20 kg, we propose to develop an onboard orbit determination receiver for small LEO satellites which lack stable Attitude Determination and Control System (ADCS), continuous GPS coverage, or ground tracking. The system is a refinement of existing spaceborne receiver technology built around a new, innovative collective detection and direct positioning algorithm developed by Dr. Penny Axelrad, a reduced set of GPS hardware, and a compact orbit propagator. The small satellite collective orbit determination receiver (SCOR) brings together efficient reference orbit representations, snapshot GPS sampling, collective detection and direct positioning, and modular orbit propagation methods, to produce an effective new approach for onboard support of small satellites. Since the collective detection algorithm does not require continuous GPS tracking to generate navigation solutions, portions of the receiver can be duty cycled to reduce power consumption between measurements. Additionally, this approach allows for satellites without pointing capabilities to obtain sufficient measurements to generate solutions by taking multiple snapshots when the spacecraft attitude is in a favorable orientation with respect to the GPS constellation.
