Description

This Small Business Innovation Research proposal offers to develop the most accurate, comprehensive and efficient finite element models to date for simulation of the material deposition processes; especially the electron beam freeform fabrication process. Phase I will deal with the basic thermal and mechanical (stress and distortion) models. A new scheme to model material deposition will be attempted; its feasibility will be tested on multi-pass deposits. A commercial finite element analysis code, ABAQUS, will be used to which a new capability for prediction of morphology will be added. During Phase II, several other key modeling issues such as the prediction of grain size, study of the effect of convection in the melt pool, parametric study, experimental validation, simulation of a demonstration part, and on-line process control will be addressed. These models will be applicable to ground-based as well as space-based systems. They will assist in understanding the effects of the various process parameters (e.g., power, feed rate, traverse speed and gravity) on variables defining the product quality; e.g., interlayer fusion, morphology, grain size, stresses and distortion. The models will also be applicable to laser, TIG and other metal deposition processes.

The Digital Flood Insurance Rate Map (DFIRM) Database depicts flood risk information and supporting data used to develop the risk data. The primary risk classifications used are the 1-percent-annual-chance flood event, the 0.2-percent-annual-chance flood event, and areas of minimal flood risk. The DFIRM Database is derived from Flood Insurance Studies (FISs), previously published Flood Insurance Rate Maps (FIRMs), flood hazard analyses performed in support of the FISs and FIRMs, and new mapping data, where available. The FISs and FIRMs are published by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). The file is georeferenced to earth's surface using the UTM projection and coordinate system. The specifications for the horizontal control of DFIRM data files are consistent with those required for mapping at a scale of 1:12000.

Bathymetry for the Broad River was derived from twenty-three surveyscontaining 98,479 soundings. No surveys were omitted. The averageseparation between soundings was 50 meters. Nineteen surveys datedfrom 1931 to 1934. The remaining four surveys, located in thesouthern portion of the river, dated from 1971 to 1974.The total range of sounding data was 1.5 meters to -21.3meters at mean low water. Mean high water values between1.9 and 2.5 meters were assigned to the shoreline. Thirteenpoints were found that were not consistent with the surroundingdata. These were removed prior to tinning. DEM grid values outsidethe shoreline (on land) were assigned null values (-32676).The Broad River has eleven 7.5 minute DEMs and a single one degreeDEM. The 1 degree DEMs were generated from the higher resolution 7.5minute DEMs which covered the estuary. A Digital Elevation Model(DEM) contains a series of elevations ordered from south to northwith the order of the columns from west to east. The DEM isformatted as one ASCII header record (A- record), followed by aseries of profile records (B- records) each of which include a shortB-record header followed by a series of ASCII integer elevations(typically in units of 1 centimeter) per each profile. The lastphysical record of the DEM is an accuracy record (C-record).The 7.5-minute DEM (30- by 30-m data spacing) is cast on theUniversal Transverse Mercator (UTM) projection. It provides coveragein 7.5- by 7.5-minute blocks. Each product provides the samecoverage as a standard USGS 7.5-minute quadrangle but the DEMcontains over edge data. Coverage is available for many estuaries ofthe contiguous United States but is not complete.

Description

This is AIRS-CloudSat collocated subset, in NetCDF 4 format. These data contain collocated: AIRS/AMSU retrievals at AMSU footprints, CloudSat radar reflectivities, and MODIS cloud mask. These data are created within the frames of the MEaSUREs project. The basic task is to bring together retrievals of water vapor and cloud properties from multiple "A-train" instruments (AIRS, AMSR-E, MODIS, AMSU, MLS, CloudSat), classify each "scene" (instrument look) using the cloud information, and develop a merged, multi-sensor climatology of atmospheric water vapor as a function of altitude, stratified by the cloud classes. This is a large science analysis project that will require the use of SciFlo technologies to discover and organize all of the datasets, move and cache datasets as required, find space/time "matchups" between pairs of instruments, and process years of satellite data to produce the climate data records. The short name for this collection is AIRSM_CPR_MAT Parameters contained in the data files include the following: Variable Name|Description|Units CH4_total_column|Retrieved total column CH4| (molecules/cm2) CloudFraction|CloudSat/CALIPSO Cloud Fraction| (None) CloudLayers| Number of hydrometeor layers| (count) clrolr|Clear-sky Outgoing Longwave Radiation|(Watts/m**2) CO_total_column|Retrieved total column CO| (molecules/cm2) CPR_Cloud_mask| CPR Cloud Mask |(None) Data_quality| Data Quality |(None) H2OMMRSat|Water vapor saturation mass mixing ratio|(gm/kg) H2OMMRStd|Water Vapor Mass Mixing Ratio |(gm/kg dry air) MODIS_Cloud_Fraction| MODIS 250m Cloud Fraction| (None) MODIS_scene_var |MODIS scene variability| (None) nSurfStd|1-based index of the first valid level|(None) O3VMRStd|Ozone Volume Mixing Ratio|(vmr) olr|All-sky Outgoing Longwave Radiation|(Watts/m**2) Radar_Reflectivity| Radar Reflectivity Factor| (dBZe) Sigma-Zero| Sigma-Zero| (dB*100) TAirMWOnlyStd|Atmospheric Temperature retrieved using only MW|(K) TCldTopStd|Cloud top temperature|(K) totH2OStd|Total precipitable water vapor| (kg/m**2) totO3Std|Total ozone burden| (Dobson) TSurfAir|Atmospheric Temperature at Surface|(K) TSurfStd|Surface skin temperature|(K) End of parameter information

Description

<p>Because conventional Radiation Hardness assurance is predicated on having data specific to the part (and possibly on the particular wafer diffusion lot of that part) being considered for flight, it has been difficult to adapt to cubesat, Class-D and other risk-tolerant mission platforms.  Indeed, even for missions with low risk tolerance, it has not been possible to place quantitative bounds on risk arising from radiation threats prior to obtaining part-specific data relevant for the application.  Often, the best that could be done would be to look at less specific data to seek qualitative reassurance that parts would ultimately fulfill their requirements.  Such data include:</p><p>Historical Data--radiation test data for the same part type, but different lots tested in the past.</p><p>Similarity or Process Data--Radiation test data for similar parts fabricated in the same semiconductor process as the flight parts</p><p>Heritage data--data regarding the past successful use of the flight parts in previous similar missions</p><p>Each of these data types poses challenges, and to date, use of these types of data has been qualitative.  We propose use of Bayesian probability to use these data types to develop quantitative radiation risk metrics.</p><p>For short, risk-tolerant missions, often the most significant risks arise from single-event effects, which due to their Poisson nature can occur at any time during the mission.  Because single-event effects susceptibility is usually considered negligible from one wafer diffusion lot to another and from part to part within a wafer diffusion lot, we concentrate on use of similarity data and heritage data.  The method addresses ways to limit the influence of the initial prior probability distribution so that the resulting distributions and discusses ways to develop statistics that are relevant to the SEE risks being considered, but still form compact distributions in the analysis.  The attached paper and presentation give details and the general philosophy of the method.</p>

The LLO operates in conjunction with the Limnological Research Center (LRC) in working towards fulfilling the objectives of the International Decade for the East African Lakes (IDEAL) to study the East African Lakes. The Lake Victoria project is funded by NSF. Like Lake Victoria, extensive work is being continued on Lake Malawi, Lake Turkana, and Lake Edward. In addition to the East African lakes, the LLO is working on Lake Issyk Kul', Lake Nicaragua, and Lake Superior. Summary: The Biogenic Silica Data file contains data for 5 cores taken from various sites in Lake Victoria. The data include ship, coring date, water depth, latitude/longitude, sampling device, sampled interval, % biogenic silica, and 14C dates. Cores were sampled at 10 cm intervals for biogenic silica analysis. Samples taken for 14C dating were prepared at the LRC Laboratory and sent to an outside AMS Facility for analysis. Pollen, charcoal, and plant macrofossils were dated. Biogenic Silica analysis was done using a timed, wet extraction technique adapted from D. J. DeMaster (1979). The analysis was done using 0.5 M NaOH at 85 0C.

Description

Improving safety while increasing the pace of space launches requires improved communications capability. An increasing volume of real-time data from numerous sensors and systems can be transmitted to the ground if connecting links can be improved. One way to accomplish this is to use existing commercial satellites to supplement overburdened NASA communications systems. Used as an adjunct service, additional commercial capacity would act to increase launch safety, allowing an increased amount of data to be transponded to ground systems without detracting from the reliability of existing communication systems. Existing NASA links could continue to be used for mission critical requirements. Limitations of two technologies prevent the transponding large amounts of data via commercial satellites. The first is a conformal antenna technology that can provide high gain by steering its beam toward the GEO satellite. The second is high-speed modem technology that can track a remote modem despite the wide dynamics experienced during launch and maneuvers. Paratek proposes to design a dual-beam, passive, electronically steered phased array (utilizing our proprietary Parascan?, phase shifters) and a highly dynamic modem to provide the communications link for spaced-based range applications. The system will leverage commercial Intelsat C-Band transponder network (4 GHz & 6 GHz).

Previous studies have raised concerns about the organochlorine pesticide concentrations in the eggs of tern species in Southern California including the California least tern Sterna antillarum browni, Boardman 1988 and Caspian tern Sterna caspia, Ohlendorf et al. 1985. The eggs analyzed in this study were eggs which failed to hatch at several San Diego Bay colonies. All black skimmer, Caspian tern, Forsters tern, elegant tern, gullbilled tern, and western snowy plover eggs were from the Salt Works located in south San Diego Bay. One of the California least tern eggs was also collected there. The contents of these eggs were tested for analytes and eggshell thickness was recorded.

Description

The objective of this proposal is to develop a gravity-independent pasteurization and hot air drying process suitable for stabilization of ALS wet cabin waste, drying of crew laundry, and water recovery from water-reprocessing brines. This dryer will use an energy-efficient closed air-loop Heat Pump Desiccant dryer to remove moisture from wet starting material and a Porous Membrane Condensing Heat Exchanger (PMCHX) to trap condensate. Water recovered during drying should be of good quality and available for reuse with standard processing. The process is energy efficient since enthalpy released by the condensing vapor is used to reheat the drying air. Volatile organic compounds are contained throughout the drying process. The system could incorporate a photocatalytic oxidation system to remove VOCs accumulated during drying. The key objective for the PMCHX is to extend its range of application from low-load humidity control in plant growth chambers to high-load condenser duty at up to 80?C air temperature and at temperatures varying over a 40?C range during a single drying run. Since the presence of organics in the condensate, and the predicted condenser temperatures of 5-40?C are conditions favorable to biofilm growth, PMCHX membranes will need to be configured to inhibit the formation of biofilms.
