Description

This group of Minnkohwin lakes, like the group of lakes surveyed last year farther west along Chalatna Creek has low waterfowl production. The two lake groups have similar thaw pond habitats and may be roughly compared: duck production on the western group of lakes in 1984 was.13 youngacre, and in 1985 on the Minnkohwin lakes production was.04 youngacre. This decrease in production on thaw ponds from 1984 to 1985 parallels the trend seen on the Kanuti and Koyukuk river drainages.

Description

The first chum salmon was caught on May 25 and were stilling catching them on August 23 three months later. Most of the migrants passed the study area in 2 or 3 weeks following breakup. A small secondary peaks wax noticed near the end of July. Catches per hour for traps by weekly periods ranged from 17.95 chum per hour on June 28 to 02 fish per hour during August 1824. These fish were dispersed throughout the width of the river system including main sloughs and side channels. Their distribution may have been regular in a vertical direction also. Nine hundred thirtyfour chum and 58 chinook were caught during the season by all methods Traps, fyke nets, and tow nets catch young salmon effectively on the Yukon River.

Description

Surveys were conducted in June and August at Little Kiska Island to look for Aleutian Canada geese Branta Canadensis leucopareia returning from previous translocations and to monitor the fate of birds released on the island in fall 1990. Two nesting pairs were found in June, the first known for over 60 years at Little Kiska. One nest produced 3 goslings and the other contained 3 infertile eggs. In addition, 5 other adult geese 2 pairs, 1 single were observed in spring. TweJ1tyfive geese were translocated from Buldir Island to Little Kiska I. on August 7, and subsequent observations indicated that there was high survival. No predation on geese by bald eagles Haliaeetus leucocephalus was noted in 1990 in contrast to the situation in 1988 and 1989 when bald eagle predation was a major mortality factor. Factors possibly contributing to low predation rates include: the prevalence of dense fog, the presence of experienced geese those nesting and summering at Little Kiska, the short period between release and flight capability, the presence of large numbers of young gulls a buffer prey for eagles, and the relatively small numbers of geese.

This report summarizes the findings of a study on red salmon survival in Karluk Lake on Kodiak Island. The objectives were to systematically isolate, study, and evaluate separate ecological factors in the freshwater environment at Karluk or Bare Lakes that conceivably could affect the survival of young salmon during any stage of their freshwater life. The survival studies are discussed.
