Long Island Sound is one of the largest estuaries along the Atlantic coast of the United States. It is a glacially produced, semi-enclosed, northeast-southwest-trending embayment, which is 150 km long and 30 km across at its widest point. Its mean water depth is approximately 24 m. The eastern end of the Sound opens to the Atlantic Ocean through several large passages between islands, whereas the western end is connected to New York Harbor through a narrow tidal strait. Long Island Sound abuts the New York-Connecticut metropolitan area and contains more than 8 million people within its watershed. A study of the modern sedimentary environments on the sea floor within the Long Island Sound estuarine system was undertaken as part of a larger research program by the U.S. Geological Survey (Coastal and Marine Geology Program) conducted in cooperation with the State of Connecticut Department of Environmental Protection and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. Knowledge of the bottom sedimentary environments was needed to discern the long-term fate of wastes and contaminants that have been, or potentially will be, introduced into the system and to help understand the distribution of benthic biologic habitats.

NanoSonic proposes to develop a low-weight, non-invasive in situ autonomous health-monitoring system for crewmembers' lunar extravehicular activity (EVA). This novel sensor technology aims at monitoring health status to improve comfort and efficiency of astronaut as well as to eliminate catastrophic failure to the individual and mission. The sensor system would consist of a fully-interconnected, non-invasive, and wearable Metal RubberTM-Textile sensor, which would be worn underneath the protective spacesuit (outer-vehicular wear) and/or can also be integrated into the inner lining of suits worn inside NASA exploratory lunar vehicles. The comfortable, durable, and low mass density fabric sensor network would be developed via Metal Rubber(TM) technology and nanostructured materials for mapping crewmembers' health status via advanced intrinsic physiological monitoring. Metal RubberTM is fabricated as a conformal coating or free-standing material via layer-by-layer, molecular self-assembly, which enables thickness and placement control over multiple constituents for true nanostructured multifunctionality; while advanced polymers have allowed scale-up to free-standing materials (several mm thick). Metal RubberTM requires less than 0.03 volume % of metal, allowing the manufacturing a cost effective, low-weight material. NanoSonic's proposed health-monitoring system would address monitoring the astronauts' metabolic rate, heart rate, electrocardiogram (ECG), and body temperature for both EVA and intra-vehicular activities.

The Oregon Department of Geology & Mineral Industries (DOGAMI) contracted with Watershed Sciences, Inc. to collect high resolution topographic LiDAR data for multiple areas within the State of Oregon. The areas for LiDAR collection have been designed as part of a collaborative effort of state, federal, and local agencies in order to meet a wide range of project goals. This LiDAR data set was collected July 31 - August 5, 2011 and encompasses portions of Deschutes, Klamath, and Lake counties in Oregon. This data set consists of bare earth and unclassified points. The average pulse density is 9.47 pulses per square meter over terrestrial surfaces. The area of interest (AOI) totals 231 square miles (147,745 acres) and the total area flown (TAF) covers 239 square miles (153,219 acres). The TAF acreage is greater than the original AOI acreage due to buffering and flight planning optimization. This metadata record reflects all the data and cumulative statistics for the overall lidar survey. In some areas of heavy vegetation or forest cover, there may be relatively few ground points in the LiDAR data. Elevation values for open water surfaces are not valid elevation values because few LiDAR points are returned from water surfaces. LiDAR intensity values were also collected. <p>A predictive tool with tight coupling of the fluid and thermal physics will give insights into the conservatism of the uncoupled design process and could lead to margin reduction and consequently reduced heat shield mass. This project seeks to couple the CHarring Ablator Response (CHAR) code and the Fully Implicit Navier-Stokes (FIN-S) code with finite-rate models governing the gas-surface interactions and surface mass loss.&nbsp; Loose coupling has already been demonstrated between the codes for non-ablating materials, which helped identify and solve potential computer science and physical modeling issues. Additionally, the development team has already shown an ability to implement a multi-physics simulation framework as they have recently coupled thermal and structural physics modules within the CHAR code. The bulk of the work focuses on modeling the energy flux terms at the gas-surface interface. The current design approach requires gross assumptions or even neglecting terms in either the CFD or AMR analyses.</p><p>Progress to date has included the integration of the software components into one executable that facilitates information exchange between the fluid and ablation physics.&nbsp; The software has been demonstrated on both two and three dimensional ablation problems.&nbsp; On going efforts include verification and validation of the new multi-physics software tool.</p>

Introduction The Integrated Research Facility (IRF) is part of the Office of the Chief Scientist (OCS) for the Division of Clinical Research in the NIAID Office of the Director. Mission Statement The mission of theOCSIRF is to manage, coordinate, and facilitate the conduct of emerging infectious disease and biodefense research to develop vaccines, countermeasures, and improved medical outcomes for patients. Purpose The IRF at Fort Detrick in Maryland was created to carry out biodefense research needed to understand the clinical disease processes which correlate with the severity of microbial-induced disease. Central to the core mission of the OCSIRF at Fort Detrick is the use of hospital tools, such as endoscopy, cardiac telemetry monitors, and CT, MRI, SPECT, and PET imaging, to systematically evaluate the pathogenic processes and clinical course of disease in animal models exposed to microbes. Research emphasis will be placed on high consequence infections requiring high levels of biocontainment: most Category A viral and bacteria pathogens plus newly emerging infectious disease microbes. In addition to addressing scientific questions related to microbes&#39; basic biology and disease-causing mechanisms-including microbial components that define a pathogen&#39;s life cycle, transmission, virulence, and invasiveness-a key goal is to correlate these findings with clinical test (telemetry and imaging) results. Evaluation of these data, in turn, depends on development of animal models which faithfully replicate the human disease syndromes, including a respiratory route of exposure. This knowledge is crucial to the development of preventative and therapeutic strategies and will not only lead to improved medical outcomes at the hospital beside but also for public health in general.

This map layer portrays 1991 and 1992 estimates for total personal income, per capita personal income, annual number of full-time and part- time jobs, average wage per job in dollars, population, and per capita number of jobs, for counties in the United States. Total personal income is all the income that is received by, or on behalf of, the residents of a particular area. It is calculated as the sum of wage and salary disbursements, other labor income, proprietors' income with inventory valuation and capital consumption adjustments, rental income of persons with capital consumption adjustment, personal dividend income, personal interest income, and transfer payments to persons, minus personal contributions for social insurance. Per capita personal income is calculated as the total personal income of the residents of a county divided by the resident population of the county. The Census Bureau's annual midyear population estimates were used in the computation. The average annual number of full-time and part-time jobs includes all jobs for which wages and salaries are paid, except jury and witness service and paid employment of prisoners. The jobs are counted at equal weight, and employees, sole proprietors, and active partners are all included. Unpaid family workers and volunteers are not included. Average wage per job is the wage and salary disbursements divided by the number of wage and salary jobs in the county. Wage and salary disbursements consist of the monetary remuneration of employees, including the compensation of corporate officers; commissions, tips, and bonuses; and receipts in kind, or pay-in-kind, such as the meals furnished to the employees of restaurants. It reflects the amount of payments disbursed, but not necessarily earned during the year. Per capita number of jobs is calculated as the average annual number of full-time and part-time jobs in a county divided by the resident population of the county. The Census Bureau's annual midyear population estimates were used in the computation. All dollar estimates are in current dollars, not adjusted for inflation. The information in this map layer comes from the Regional Economic Information System (REIS) that is distributed by the Bureau of Economic Analysis, http://www.bea.gov/. This is an updated version of the November 2004 map layer.

PI Contact: Erik Chapman Old Dominion University Center for Coastal Physical Oceanography Norfolk, Virginia 23529 phone 757 377 0482 e-mail chapman@ccpo.odu.edu (mailto:chapman@ccpo.odu.edu) SO GLOBEC, BG243 Predator Survey Methods Seabird abundance and distribution within the SO GLOBEC study area was investigated using daytime and nighttime (using night vision viewers) survey work. We also recorded seal observations made within the transect area. Nighttime surveys were designed to complement daytime surveys. Daytime Surveys Methods Strip transects were conducted simultaneously at 300 m and 600 m widths for birds. Surveys were conducted continuously while the ship was underway within the study area and when visibility was >300 m. For strip transects, two observers continuously scanned a 90° area extending the transect distance (300 m and 600 m) to the side and forward along the transect line. Binoculars of 10X and 7X magnification were used to confirm species identifications. The 7X pair of binoculars also included a laser range finder. Ship followers and bird observed to be attracted to the ship were noted at first occurrence. These observations will be down-weighted in the analyses because these individuals may have been attracted to the ship from habitats at a distance from the ship. For each sighting, transect (300 m or 600 m), species, number of birds, behavior, flight direction, and any association with visible physical features, such as ice, were recorded. Distances were measured either by a range finder device as suggested by Heinemann (1981) or by the laser distance finder (when in the ice). Marine mammal sightings within the transect were also recorded. Surveys were conducted from an outside observation post located on the port bridge wing of the RVIB N.B. Palmer. When it was not feasible to conduct surveys from this observation post, we surveyed from the inside port bridge wing. Seabird Nighttime Surveys Methods ITT 200/210 Binocular Night Vision Viewers were used during one half-hour survey periods while on the survey grid. Surveys were a minimum of an hour apart. Observations were made from the bridge wing during NBP0104 and outside, from a dark area on the 01 deck, during NBP0103. Observers scanned back and forth looking for birds. Species and behavior of the bird was recorded for each observation. Observations were not conducted when visibility with the night vision viewer was less than 100 m from the ship. Resources for Advanced Data Analysis and Visualization Researchers who have access to the latest analysis and visualization tools are able to use large amounts of complex data to find efficiencies in projects, designs, and resources. The Data Analysis and Assessment Center (DAAC) at ERDC&#39;s Information Technology Laboratory (ITL) provides visualization and analysis tools and support services to enable the analysis of an ever-increasing volume of data. Simplify Data Analysis and Visualization Research The resources provided by the DAAC enable any user to conduct important data analysis and visualization that provides valuable insight into projects and designs and helps to find ways to save resources. The DAAC provides new tools like ezVIZ, and services such as the DAAC website, a rich resource of news about the DAAC, training materials, a community forum and tutorials on how to use data analysis and other issues. The DAAC can perform collaborative work when users prefer to do the work themselves but need help in choosing which visualization program and/or technique and using the visualization tools. The DAAC also carries out custom projects to produce high-quality animations of data, such as movies, which allow researchers to communicate their results to others. Communicate Research in Context DAAC provides leading animation and modeling software which allows scientists and researchers may communicate all aspects of their research by setting their results in context through conceptual visualization and data analysis. Success Stories Wave Breaking and Associated Droplet and Bubble Formation Wave breaking and associated droplet and bubble formation are among the most challenging problems in the field of free-surface hydrodynamics. The method of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) was used to solve this problem numerically for flow about naval vessels. The researchers wanted to animate the time-varying three-dimensional data sets using isosurfaces, but transferring the data back to the local site was a problem because the data sets were large. The DAAC visualization team solved the problem by using EnSight and ezVIZ to generate the isosurfaces, and photorealistic rendering software to produce the images for the animation. Explosive Structure Interaction Effects in Urban Terrain Known as the Breaching Project, this research studied the effects of high-explosive (HE) charges on brick or reinforced concrete walls. The results of this research will enable the war fighter to breach a wall to enter a building where enemy forces are conducting operations against U.S. interests. Images produced show computed damaged caused by an HE charge on the outer and inner sides of a reinforced concrete wall. The ability to quickly and meaningfully analyze large simulation data sets helps guide further development of new HE package designs and better ways to deploy the HE packages. A large number of designs can be simulated and analyzed to find the best at breaching the wall. The project saves money in greatly reduced field test costs by testing only the designs which were identified in analysis as the best performers. Specifications Amethyst, the seven-node Linux visualization cluster housed at the DAAC, is supported by ParaView, EnSight, and ezViz visualization tools and configured as follows: Six computer nodes, each with the following specifications: CPU: 8 dual-core 2.4 Ghz, 64-bit AMD Opteron Processors (16 effective cores) Memory: 128-G RAM Video: NVidia Quadro 5500 1-GB memory Network: Infiniband Interconnect between nodes, and Gigabit Ethernet to Defense Research and Engineering Network (DREN) One storage node: Disk Space: 20-TB TerraGrid file system, mounted on all nodes as /viz and /work
