Popis

The Anacostia River is a freshwater tributary that flows through Maryland and the District of Columbia to the Potomac River. In D.C., the Anacostia River flows through National Park Service lands including the National Arboretum, Kenilworth Gardens, and Anacostia Park. The river has been the site of moderate oil spills, receives significant input of heavy metals and organic pollutants from urban nonpoint sources, and is known as one of the most polluted rivers in the United States. The sediments of the lower reach of this river have been found to contain elevated levels of polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons PAHs, polychlorinated biphenyls PCBs, chlordane, chromium, lead, and zinc. High levels of PAHs were cited as a potential cause of the high incidence of carcinogenic tumors found in fish from the Anacostia River. The presence of injurious levels of toxic chemicals in the Anacostia Watershed places anadromous fish and endangered and threatened species such as the bald eagle at significant risk. In 1993, as part of a maintenance dredging action by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers ACOE, dredged material from the Anacostia River was used to construct tidal freshwater wetlands in Kenilworth Marsh. This location was identified as the first of several sites along the main stem and side channels of the river where wetland restoration is proposed to enhance tidal mud flats using sediments from the Anacostia River. In this study, sediments, broadleaf cattails Typha latifolia, and killifish Fundulus sp. were collected and analyzed for PCBs, chlorinated pesticides, and metals. The objectives of this study were to determine the concentration of toxic chemicals present in the community developing on the new tidal freshwater wetlands in Kenilworth Marsh. Knowledge of transport and fate of the toxic constituents of wetland sediments will be used to substantiate an informed position on future use of dredged materials from the Anacostia River to construct wetlands.

A bare earth elevation map (also known as a Digital Elevation Model, or DEM) of the northern Gulf of Mexico barrier islands and Naval Live Oaks was produced from remotely sensed, geographically referenced elevation measurements cooperatively by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), the National Park Service (NPS), and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA). This data set provides the those bare earth elevation measurements of the barrier islands in the following counties: St. Bernard in LA, Harrison and Jackson in MS, Mobile and Baldwin in AL, and Escambia and Santa Rosa in FL. Elevation measurements were collected over the area using the NASA Experimental Advanced Airborne Research Lidar (EAARL), a pulsed-laser ranging system mounted onboard an aircraft to measure ground elevation, vegetation canopy, and coastal topography. The system uses high-frequency laser beams directed at the Earth's surface through an opening in the bottom of the aircraft's fuselage. The laser system records the time difference between emission of the laser beam and the reception of the reflected laser signal in the aircraft. The plane travels over the target area at approximately 50 meters per second at an elevation of approximately 300 meters. The EAARL, developed by NASA at Wallops Flight Facility in Virginia, measures ground elevation with a vertical resolution of 15 centimeters. A sampling rate of 3 kilohertz or higher results in an extremely dense spatial elevation dataset. Over 100 kilometers of coastline can be surveyed easily within a 3- to 4-hour mission. When subsequent elevation maps for an area are analyzed, they provide managers with a useful tool to make management decisions regarding land development.

The Digital Flood Insurance Rate Map (DFIRM) Database depicts flood risk information and supporting data used to develop the risk data. The primary risk classifications used are the 1-percent-annual-chance flood event, the 0.2-percent-annual- chance flood event, and areas of minimal flood risk. The DFIRM Database is derived from Flood Insurance Studies (FISs), previously published Flood Insurance Rate Maps (FIRMs), flood hazard analyses performed in support of the FISs and FIRMs, and new mapping data, where available. The FISs and FIRMs are published by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). The file is georeferenced to earth's surface using the Universal Transverse Mercator Coordinate System (ZONE 17N) and Transverse Mercator projection. The specifications for the horizontal control of DFIRM data files are consistent with those required for mapping at a scale of 1:12,000.

The goal of the proposed effort is to use selective laser melting (SLM, an additive manufacturing technique) to manufacture a hot fire-capable, water-cooled spool piece that features an advanced regenerative cooling technique that combines high heat flux performance with low pressure drop. SLM enables us to "print" the spool piece in days, despite the complexity of the regenerative liner's inherent flow passage complexity. This reduction in manufacturing lead time, combined with the fact that SLM manufacturing costs are driven in large part by the amount of raw powder used during fabrication, results in a substantial cost reduction for future regeneratively-cooled rocket engines. Additionally, the proposed advanced regenerative cooling approach features a heat-pickup efficiency that is at least two orders of magnitude higher than traditional milled channel liners and/or brazed tube bundle chambers. As a result of our Phase I activity and confidence in our commercialization path, we will be making a capital investment to stand up an SLM manufacturing capability in house. We plan to augment that investment with an internally-funded trade study that we will use to derive main combustion chamber performance requirements for a future expander cycle engine. Those requirements will feed into Phase II design requirements and, ultimately, to supporting our commercialization opportunity presented by the Affordable Upper Stage Engine Program.

As flightdeck equipment becomes more sophisticated and complex, operations become significantly more cognitively demanding. When tasks demands exceed the operator's available cognitive resources, potentially costly errors occur. A task mitigation system that is able to monitor the task and the operator's functional state (OFS) and implement task mitigation strategies before an operator becomes overloaded could significantly reduce errors and allow operators to work more efficiently. This proposal describes the development of a closed-loop task mitigation system that uses advanced regression techniques to identify the relationships between the OFS, the physiological measurements, the mission-related context, and the task mitigation strategies. To maximize accuracy, we use task analysis to develop a computational cognitive model of the planned mission profile, which is then used to train the regression model. The computational cognitive model describes the OFS as a continuous function along four dimensions: executive function, spatial working memory, verbal working memory and attention. The task analysis is also used to develop task mitigation strategies for each psychological dimension that assist the operator with task switching, maintaining awareness of multiple task "threads", and performing cognitively demanding tasks. Finally, the task mitigation strategies enable the system to dynamically allocate tasks among multiple operators.

This proposal presents a stand-alone implicit high order temporal differencing solver concept that will interface with research and commercial numerical analysis codes to provide unlimited temporal accuracy. While the computational fluid dynamics (CFD) market has mature products that solve a large portion of problems faced by practicing engineers, these tools are often inadequate for fast transient, multi-scale numerical problems such as highly resolved turbulence, vortex shedding and combustion instability where rapid, small scale local phenomena can be overwhelmed by numerical dissipation. Many research and commercial solvers perform sufficient spatial resolution, but use insufficient explicit or low order implicit temporal resolution. Higher order explicit temporal schemes are not always feasible when modeling turbulence, can be severely limited by the time step size, and are less efficient than even low-order implicit methods. In the proposed Phase I effort, a previously developed high order implicit time integration formulation, tested up to 11th order accuracy, will be extracted from an existing solver and interfaced with an independent finite-volume solver to prove the feasibility of providing decoupled time integration for existing numerical codes. In Phase II, the time integration formulation will be implemented in a software framework and tested with readily available, popular numerical codes

This project was a cooperative effort among the National Ocean Service, National Centers for Coastal Ocean Science, Center for Coastal Monitoring and Assessment; the University of Hawaii; and Analytical Laboratories of Hawaii, LLC. The goal of the work was to develop coral reef mapping methods and compare benthic habitat maps generated by photointerpreting georeferenced color aerial photography, hyperspectral and IKONOS satellite imagery. Twenty-seven distinct benthic habitat types within eleven zones were mapped directly into a GIS system using visual interpretation of orthorectified aerial photographs and hyperspectral imagery. Benthic features were mapped that covered an area of 790 km^2. In all, 204 km^2 of unconsolidated sediment, 171 km^2 of submerged vegetation, and 415 km^2 of coral reef and colonized hardbottom were mapped. The Biogeography program developed an ArcIMS browser to allow users to view maps of the Island of Niihau and perform basis queries of the data over the internet.
