Description

Abstract: This CD-ROM (Compact Disk - Read Only Memory) contains sidescan sonar, high-resolution seismic-reflection, bathymetric, textural, and bibliographic data and interpretations collected, compiled, and produced through the U.S. Geological Survey/State of Connecticut Cooperative and the Long Island Sound Environmental Studies Project of the Coastal and Marine Geology Program, U.S. Geological Survey during October 1991 to August 1998. Cooperative research with the State of Connecticut was initiated in 1982. During the initial phase of this cooperative program, geologic framework studies in Long Island Sound were completed. The second and current phase of the program, which is the focus of this CD-ROM, emphasizes studies of sediment distribution, processes that control sediment distribution, near-shore environmental concerns, and the relationship of benthic communities to sea-floor geology. The study area covers all of Long Island Sound, which is bordered on the north by the rocky shoreline of Connecticut, on the east by Block Island Sound, on the south by the eroding sandy bluffs of Long Island, and on the west by the East River and the New York metropolitan area. Sidescan sonar data were variously collected with 100 kHz Klein, Datasonics, and Edgetech systems under two survey schemes. In the first scheme, the data were collected along closely-spaced grids where the ship tracks were spaced 150 m apart and the sonar system was set to sweep 100 m to either side of the ship's track. This scheme produced the continuous-coverage acoustic images that are stored on the CD-ROM as TIF files. In the second scheme, the sidescan sonar data collected along reconnaissance lines spaced about 2,400 m apart. Only selected portions of this data, when used for geologic interpretation, are stored on this CD-ROM. Under both survey schemes, the sidescan sonar data were processed according to procedures summarized by Danforth and others (1991) and Paskevich (1992a, 1992b, 1992c). The seismic reflection data were variously collected with an Ocean Research Equipment 3.5-kHz profiler transmitting at a 0.25-s repetition rate and a Datasonics CHIRP system set to sweep between 2-7 kHz. Only selected seismic-reflection data, which are used as examples in geologic interpretations, are stored as GIF-formatted images on this CD-ROM. Navigation during this project was determined with a differential Global Positioning System (GPS); position data were logged at 10-second intervals. The bathymetric data were collected by means of a 200-kHz echo sounder and logged digitally. Surficial sediment (0-2 cm below the sediment-water interface) sampling completed as part of this project was conducted using a Van Veen grab sampler equipped with an Osprey video and still camera system. The photographic system was used to appraise bottom variability around stations, faunal communities, and sedimentary processes. It also documented bedrock outcrops and boulder fields where samples could not be collected. The fine fraction (less than 62 microns) was analyzed by Coulter Counter (Shideler, 1976); the coarse fraction was analyzed by sieving (gravel) and by rapid sediment analyzer (sand; Schlee, 1966). The data were corrected for the salt content of interstitial water. Size classifications are based on the method proposed by Wentworth (1929) and were calculated using the inclusive graphics statistical method (Folk, 1974), using the nomenclature proposed by Shepard (1954). A detailed discussion of the sedimentological methods employed are given in Poppe and others (1985); a detailed description of the methods used to perform the CHN analyses are given in Poppe and others (1996) . The database presented here contains over 14,000 records and 83 fields (see the Data Dictionary below). The specific fields and parameters have been chosen based on the data produced by the sedimentation laboratory of the Coastal and Marine Geology Program of the U.S. Geological Survey in Woods Hole, Mass., and the format of information typically found in the literature. Because the data have come from numerous sources, there are differing amounts and types of information. Most of the samples or sets of samples do not have data in all of the given fields. However, additional fields, qualifiers, and data can be added in virtually unlimited fashion to accommodate specific needs. The database itself is provided in four formats: Microsoft EXCEL, ver. 5, Quattro Pro for Windows, Dbase IV, and Tab-delimited ASCII text. Four bathymetric data sets are presented and include:1) Interpretations of the bathymetry within the continuous-coverage sidescan sonar study areas; 2} The NOS database modified to remove extraneous data (i.e. bouys); 3) Contoured National Ocean Service (NOS) bathymetry digitized by Applied Geographics Inc., Boston, Massachusetts; and 4) a fly-by based on the modified NOS database. Data files are present in ASCII format with navigation and depth in meters. The bathymetric interpretations within the sidescan sonar study areas are based on mean sea level and stored as TIF images; the NOS data are based on mean low sea level; and the fly-by is configured to run in QuickTime or MPEG, which can be downloaded from this CD-ROM. The bibliographic database, which contains over 2,000 references, is stored as an ASCII text, Microsoft Word, Corel WordPerfect, HTML, and Microsoft EXCEL files. This bibliography is largely a compilation of references from Lewis and Coffin (1985) and the GENCAT bibliographic database at the Long Island Sound Resource Center, Connecticut Department of Environmental Protection, Groton, Connecticut. These sources have been supplemented by citations from the BIOSIS, GEOREF, and FISH AND FISHERIES WORLDWIDE bibliographic databases.

Description

Firestar Engineering has developed a set of Nitrous Oxide Fuel Blend monopropellants that are: 1) Non-toxic, 2) Specific Impulse> 310 s, 3) Freezing point < -77 C, 4) Self Pressurizing, and 5) Highly throttleable. A monopropellant with these characteristics and with bipropellant performance has the power to revolutionize both private and government space initiatives. Applications which will benefit from these monopropellant blends are wide spread and system level studies have indicated competitive overall performance with everything except cryogenic bipropellants. Phase II efforts will concentrate on thruster development and monopropellant UN/DOT transportation classification. Thruster development will concentrate on a 25 lbf RCS thruster and performing a number of tests required for flight certification.

NEW - the following surveys were addedbecause they represent more recentdata than those formerly in the samegeographic location. They are FE0239(1979) and H07841 (1950). Bathymetryfor Raritan Bay was derived from twenty-five surveys containing 230,575soundings. Seventeen overlapping, older, less accurate surveys wereentirely omitted, and the overlap fromone older, less accurate survey wasomitted before tinning the data. Theaverage separation between soundingswas 44 meters. The twenty-five surveysused dated from 1927 to 1988. Thesurvey from 1927 was located in thesoutheast. The eight surveys from 1934to 1936 were located in the extremeeast and west. The remaining surveysdated from 1950 to 1988. The total rangeof sounding data was 1.9 meters to -33.7 meters at mean low water. Meanhigh water values between0.8 and 1.8 meters were assigned to theshoreline. Sixteen points were foundthat were not consistent with thesurrounding data. These were removedprior to tinning. DEM grid values outside the shoreline (on land)were assigned null values (-32676).Raritan Bay has seventeen 7.5 minute DEMs and two one degree DEMs.The 1 degree DEMs were generated from the higher resolution 7.5minute DEMs which covered the estuary. A Digital Elevation Model(DEM) contains a series of elevations ordered from south to northwith the order of the columns from west to east. The DEM isformatted as one ASCII header record (A- record), followed by aseries of profile records (B- records) each of which include a shortB-record header followed by a series of ASCII integer elevations(typically in units of 1 centimeter) per each profile. The lastphysical record of the DEM is an accuracy record (C-record).The 7.5-minute DEM (30- by 30-m data spacing) is cast on theUniversal Transverse Mercator (UTM) projection. It provides coveragein 7.5- by 7.5-minute blocks. Each product provides the samecoverage as a standard USGS 7.5-minute quadrangle but the DEMcontains over edge data. Coverage is available for many estuaries ofthe contiguous United States but is not complete.

Nesting spectacled eiders were monitored for the 20th consecutive year on Kigigak Island, Alaska in 2011. Clutch size, hatch date, and final nest status were determined to estimate nesting productivity of spectacled eider females. In addition, adult females were resighted, captured, and marked to estimate annual survival. Peak nest initiation and hatch occurred 2730 May and 2023 June, respectively. We located 114 spectacled eider nests on 33 plots. Of these 114, 27 were unsuccessful due to natural causes, including depredation 25 nests, 21.9 and addledinviable eggs 2 nests, 1.8, and 2 were unsuccessful due to human influences 1.8. The estimated Mayfield nest success of 103 nests was 57.9 95 CI; 45.068.7. Eightysix adult females were identified in 2011: 71 were nesttrapped and 15 were visually identified by nasal disk or tarsal band. Fortysix of the nesttrapped females were recaptures; the other twentyfive were new captures. Three of the 46 recaptured birds had been banded as ducklings in 2008 and were observed nesting on Kigigak Island for the first time in 2011.

Description

Impact Technologies, LLC in collaboration with the Rochester Institute of Technology, proposes to develop and demonstrate a flight-worthy hardware prototype of a miniature, low cost/weight/ power device that provides stable and highly accurate near continuous positioning, attitude, and inertial measurements while being subjected to highly dynamic maneuvers and high vibration effects. In contrast to conventional methods that utilize either unreliable magnetic field sensors or extensive ground-based real-time tracking and control units that are expensive, large and power-consuming to operate, our innovative design focuses on identifying the gravitational vector onboard in real-time to bound sensor drift errors to achieve high degree of accuracy. The objective is achieved by a unique design that combines a dual-arc low-cost accelerometer array with three-axis rate gyros and GPS. Advanced filtering techniques such as the Unscented Kalman Filter are proposed to estimate sensor bias and drift effects. High vibration effects are estimated and eliminated by subtracting the imposed loading from the accelerometer measurements to provide a highly robust system in the presence of highly dynamical and vibrational conditions. Testing of the prototype system includes shaker table laboratory and hardware-in-the-loop tests along with an optional relevant vehicle platform test with support from NASA.

The U.S. Fish Wildlife ServiceEcological Services, Corpus Christi Field Office conducted baseline contaminants assessments of sediments and biota from the Corpus Christi Bay Complex in 19881989. Two hundred and eightytwo sediment samples and 80 biota samples were collected. Biota included composite samples of shoalgrass Halodule wrightii, eastern oysters Crassostrea virginica, blue crabs Callinectes sapidus, calico crabs Eriphia gonagra, toadfish Opsanus beta, and hardhead catfish A rius felis. Samples were analyzed for polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons PAHs, organochlorines OCs, polychlorinated biphenyls PCBs, and twentythree trace elements. Six biota samples were also analyzed for the dioxin 2,3,7,8 TCDD. The results of organic analyses revealed levels of P AHs, OCs, and PCBs either below detection lower limit of detection was 0.01 ppm wet weight or at very low levels in sediments. All biota samples analyzed for dioxins were below detection lower limit of detection ranged from 0.25 to 0.64 picograms per gram, or parts per trillion. OCs were below FDA levels of concern in all biota except for one Corpus Christi Bay hardhead catfish sample, which had 3.8 ppm PCBs wet weight. However, an overall trend toward biomagnification of PCBs and p,pDDE was observed. Total PCBs were detected in 45 of the biota samples and DDE was detected in 86.

Description

This dataset represents 19,031 basin boundaries and their streamgage locations for the U.S. Geological Survey's (USGS) active and historical streamgages from the published dataset of Stewart and others (2006) and its subsequent updates (D.W. Stewart, USGS, written commun., 2011). Only the basin boundaries that were delineated within 15 percent of the basin area reported in the National Water Information System (NWIS) were included in this dataset. This dataset only includes streamgage basins in the lower 48 states and not in Alaska, Hawaii, or Puerto Rico. The basin boundaries and streamgage locations are provided in 18 shapefiles separated by 2-digit Hydrologic Unit Code. The USGS streamgage station's identification number attached to each delineated polygon can be linked to the attribute data found in Stewart and others (2006). The delineated watersheds were made from digital elevation models found in the NHDPlus data suite (version 1, 2006) and based on gage locations provided by Stewart and others (2006). These basins have been used in several USGS studies such as James Falcone's "GAGES-II: Geospatial Attributes of Gages for Evaluating Streamflow" (2011) and Xiaodong Jian and others, "WaterWatch-Maps, Graphs, and Tables of Current, Recent, and Past Streamflow Conditions " (2008).

Fish survey, fishing duration, and other data were collected from gill nets, fyke nets, and other gear from the NOAA Ship DISCOVERER and other platforms from 25 July 1982 to 23 September 1983. Data were collected by Alaska Research Associates, Inc. and LGL Ltd. as part of Outer Continental Shelf Environmental Assessment Program (OCSEAP). Data were processed by NODC to the NODC F123 Fish/Shellfish Surveys format. Full format description is available from NODC at www.nodc.noaa.gov/General/NODC-Archive/f123.html. An analog file for this accession is available from NODC user services. The F123 format is used for data from field sampling of marine fish and shellfish. The data derive from analysis of midwater or bottom tow catches and provide information on population density and distribution. Cruise information, position, date, time, gear type, fishing distance and duration, and number of hauls are reported for each survey. Environmental data may include meteorological conditions, surface and bottom temperature and salinity, and current direction and speed. Bottom trawl or other gear dimensions and characteristics are also reported. Catch statistics (e.g., weight, volume, number of fish per unit volume) may be reported for both total haul and for individual species. Biological characteristics of selected specimens, predator/ prey information (from stomach contents analysis), and growth data may also be included. A text record is available for comment.

LIDAR data is remotely sensed high-resolution elevation data collected by an airborne collection platform. By positioning laser range finding with the use of 1 second GPS with 100hz inertial measurement unit corrections; Terrapoint's LIDAR instruments are able to make highly detailed geospatial elevation products of the ground, man-made structures and vegetation. The LiDAR flightlines for this project was planned for a 50% acquisition overlap. The nominal resolution of this project without overlap is 1.25m. Four returns were recorded for each pulse in addition to an intensity value. GPS Week Time, Intensity, Flightline and number attributes were provided for each LiDAR point. Data is provided as random points, in LAS v1.0 format, classified according to ASPRS Class Code 2=Ground 1=Undefined. Water is included in the bare earth ground model, except where the entire tile is covered by water. The following regions of Connecticut are included in this project: Fairfield County - 130 square kilometers New Haven - 170 square kilometers Middlesex - 29 square kilometers New London - 157 square kilometers Please note that the LiDAR intensity is not calibrated or normalized. The intensity value is meant to provide relative signal return strengths for features imaged by the sensor.
