Description

The Kenai NWR MooseHabitat Management Plan was developed to guide future FWS management of moosehabitat on Kenai NWR. The present status and trend of Kenai NWR moose populations are evaluated, and factors affecting moose population dynamics are examined. Based on these analyses, FWS proposes to work with the Alaska Department of Fish and Game in the following actions to maintain viable and healthy moose populations at nearcurrent densities on the Refuge: 1 implementation of a longterm habitat manipulation program using prescribed burning as a primary tool; 2 continued monitoring of the status of moose populations using aerial surveys, direct animal assessments, and habitat evaluation; 3 continuation of selective harvest regulations for bull moose and establishment of moose population composition objectives for moose populations in the northern, central, and southern portions of the Refuge; 4 examination of predatorprey relationships and highway accidents involving moose in order to determine their future implications to moose and predator population dynamics and moose management; and 5 identification of research priorities related to moose management on the Refuge.

Description

To support NOAA Coral Reef Conservation Program (CRCP) long-term goals for sustainable management and conservation of coral reef ecosystems, towed-diver surveys (aka. towboard surveys) were conducted by the Coral Reef Ecosystem Division (CRED) of the NOAA Pacific Islands Fisheries Science Center (PIFSC) as part of biennial Pacific Reef Assessment and Monitoring Program (RAMP) Cruises. 8 towboard surveys (20.2285 km in length), were conducted at Tinian Island during the Marianas Archipelago RAMP Cruise HI0702 from 12 - 22 May 2007. Towboard surveys are a good method for obtaining a general description of large reef areas, assessing the status of low-density populations of large-bodied reef fish, large-scale disturbances (e.g., bleaching), general distribution and abundance patterns of macro-invertebrates (e.g., COT, giant clams), and for assessing trends in these populations and metrics. A pair of scuba divers (1 fish and 1 benthic diver) are towed 60 m behind a small survey launch at a speed of 1-2 knots and a depth of approximately 15m. Each survey is 50 min long, covers about 2 km of habitat, and is divided into ten 5-minute survey segments. The fish diver records, to the lowest possible taxon, all large-bodied reef fishes (>50cmTL) seen within 5m either side and 10m in front of the towboard. Length of each individual is estimated to the nearest cm. The fish towboard is also outfitted with a forward-facing digital video camera to record the survey swath. The benthic diver records percent cover of coral and macroalgae, estimates benthic habitat type and complexity, and censuses a suite of benthic macroinvertebrates including Crown of Thorns sea stars and sea urchins. The benthic towboard is equipped with a downward-facing digital still camera which images the benthos at 15 second intervals. These images are analyzed for percent cover of coral, algae, and other benthic components. Both towboards are equipped with SEABIRD SBE-39 temperature/depth sensors set to record at 5 second intervals. Latitude and longitude of each survey track is recorded at 15 second intervals using a Global Positioning System (GPS) receiver onboard the tow boat. A layback algorithm is applied to more accurately map the position of the divers with respect to the reef environment. This algorithm calculates the position of the divers based on the position of the tow boat taking into account the length of the tow rope, the depth of the divers, and the curvature of the survey track. This metadata applies to the benthic characterization observations.

Description

The SeaWiFS instrument was launched by Orbital Sciences Corporation on the OrbView-2 (a.k.a. SeaStar) satellite in August 1997, and collected data from September 1997 until the end of mission in December 2010. SeaWiFS had 8 spectral bands from 412 to 865 nm. It collected global data at 4 km resolution, and local data (limited onboard storage and direct broadcast) at 1 km. The mission and sensor were optimized for ocean color measurements, with a local noon (descending) equator crossing time orbit, fore-and-aft tilt capability, full dynamic range, and low polarization sensitivity.

Description

Current meter components data were collected from FIXED PLATFORMS from 07 September 1981 to 01 September 1982. Data were collected by the University of Washington (UW). Data were processed by NODC to the NODC standard F015 Current Meter Components format. Full format description is available from NODC at www.nodc.noaa.gov/General/NODC-Archive/f015.html. The F015 format contains time series measurements of ocean currents. These data are obtained from current meter moorings and represent the Eulerian method of current measurement, i.e., the meters are deployed at a fixed point and measure flow past a sensor. Position, bottom depth, sensor depth and meter characteristics are reported for each station. The data record includes values of east-west (u) and north-south (v) current vector components at specified date and time. Current direction is defined as the direction toward which the water is flowing with positive directions east and north. Data values may be subject to averaging or filtering and are typically reported at 10 - 15 minute time intervals. Water temperature, pressure and conductivity or salinity may also be reported. A text record is available for optional comments.

Description

The Coastal Zone Color Scanner Experiment (CZCS) was the first instrument devoted to the measurement of ocean color and flown on a spacecraft. Although other instruments flown on other spacecraft had sensed ocean color, their spectral bands, spatial resolution and dynamic range were optimized for land or meteorological use and had limited sensitivity in this area, whereas in CZCS, every parameter was optimized for use over water to the exclusion of any other type of sensing. CZCS had six spectral bands, four of which were used primarily for ocean color. These were of a 20 nanometer bandwidth centered at 443, 520, 550, and 670 nm. Band 5 had a 100 nm bandwidth centered at 750 nm and a dynamic range more suited to land. Band 6 operated in the 10.5 to 12.5 micrometer region and sensed emitted thermal radiance for derivation of equivalent black body temperature. (This thermal band failed within the first year of the mission, and so was not used in the global processing effort.) Bands 1-4 were preset to view water only and saturated when the IFOV was over most types of land surfaces, or clouds. The most important objective of the Coastal Zone Color Scanner mission was to determine if satellite remote sensing of color could be used to identify and quantify material suspended or dissolved in ocean waters. Specifically CZCS attempted to discriminate between organic and inorganic materials in the water, determine the quantity of material and discriminate between different organic particulate types. This product contains the mission long cumulative Level-3 Standard Mapped Image (Equal-Angular Cylindrical grid) data products. Each product contains one of the following parameters at 4 or 9 km resolution: Remote sensing reflectance at 443, 520, 555 and 670nm Diffuse attenuation at 490nm Aerosol opticatl thickness at 670nm Chlorophyll a concentration

Description

This study was initiated due to the high levels of PCBs 2300 ppm in soil, 660ppb in sediment, 40ppb groundwater and lead 2800 ppm soil found on Tern Island in French Frigate Shoals FFS. Pearl and Hermes Atoll was not thought to have been used for human exploitation or habitation. Recently, it became clear that the Atoll was used to refuel float planes during WWII. At Midway, DDT contamination is found with every excavation. Recent monitoring results found PCBs in the Midway Atoll fish as high as 25 ppm dry weight and 2300 ppb in the sediments. These sediment results are even more alarming in that they were taken from a high energy area where all debris was removed more than 2 years ago, suggesting an unknown source. One third of Sand Island of Midway Atoll is manmade landfill. No records exist as to what was used for fill besides coral dredge waste. This year two previously unknown USTs were found on Eastern Island, Midway Atoll. Each year over 1 million Albatross nest on Midway. Several hundred thousand more nest on the other atolls of the Northwest Hawaiian chain. This study attempted to determine what effect local contamination has on albatross reproduction and survival, and was not able to determine conclusively that local contamination was the only cause for elevated concentrations of pollutants in the local albatross.
