Description

The entire population of the Wood River Valley depends on ground water for domestic supply, either from domestic or municipal-supply wells, rapid population growth since the 1970s has raised concerns about the continued availability of ground and surface water to support existing uses and streamflow. To help address these concerns, ground- and surface-water conditions in the area before and during the population growth that started in the 1970s was evaluated. This dataset helps analyze trends in ground-water data, documents 2006 hydrologic conditions, and is used to compare 2006 and historic ground-water data of the Wood River Valley of south-central Idaho. It represents ground-water conditions in the unconfined aquifer during October 2006 constructed from 88 water-level measurements in the main valley and 8 tributary canyons.

Description

This classification of estimated depth represents the relative bathymetry of the U.S. Virgin Islands shallow waters based on Landsat imagery for NOAA's Coastal Centers for Monitoring and Assessment (CCMA). This data supports mapping and research activities of NOAA NOS. These data were created for the NOS Summit-to-Sea project. This project determines relationships between terrestrial and bethic change. The data were created using NOS developed algorithms. Bathymetry was derived from six Landsat images of different dates for the USVI. The final bathymetry layer was derived from a per pixel median analysis of th 6 bathymetric layers. The results were verified using field collected depth supplied by NOAA. Depths are only reported within the shallow environment as determined by maximum penetration of band 1 (blue) of Landsat TM.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) has the statutory mandate to collect hydrographic data in support of nautical chart compilation for safe navigation and to provide background data for engineers, scientific, and other commercial and industrial activities. Hydrographic survey data primarily consist of water depths, but may also include features (e.g. rocks, wrecks), navigation aids, shoreline identification, and bottom type information. NOAA is responsible for archiving and distributing the source data as described in this metadata record.

The report begins with an introduction to the Refuge and information about weather conditions, habitat conditions, land acquisition activities, and the system status. Construction, maintenance, and wildfires are also described. Habitat management is covered; croplands, grasslands, wetlands, forests, wilderness areas, and easements for waterfowl management are discussed. The wildlife section of the report discusses endangered and threatened species, migratory birds, mammals, and nonmigratory birds. Interpretation and recreation activities are outlined; topics include information and interpretation, recreation, and law enforcement. Field investigations, cooperative programs, items of interest, and safety information are attached.

Description

The Floodplain Mapping/Redelineation study deliverables depict and quantify the flood risks for the study area. The primary risk classifications used are the 1-percent-annual-chance flood event, the 0.2-percent-annual- chance flood event, and areas of minimal flood risk. The Floodplain Mapping/Redelineation flood risk boundaries are derived from the engineering information Flood Insurance Studies (FISs), previously published Flood Insurance Rate Maps (FIRMs), flood hazard analyses performed in support of the FISs and FIRMs, and new mapping data, where available. The FISs and FIRMs are published by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA).

Description

This database contains information compiled from published studies on gas flux from soil following rewetting or thawing. The resulting database includes 222 field and laboratory observations focused on rewetting of dry soils, and 116 field laboratory observations focused on thawing of frozen soils studies conducted from 1956 to 2010. Fluxes of carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous oxide, nitrogen oxide, and ammonia (CO2, CH4, N2O, NO and NH3) were compiled from the literature and the flux rates were normalized for ease of comparison. Field observations of gas flux following rewetting of dry soils include events caused by natural rainfall, simulated rainfall in natural ecosystems, and irrigation in agricultural lands. Similarly, thawing of frozen soils include field observations of natural thawing, simulated freezing-thawing events (i.e., thawing of simulated frozen soil by snow removal), and thawing of seasonal ice in temperate and high latitude regions (Kim et al., 2012). Reported parameters include experiment type, location, site type, vegetation, climate, soil properties, rainfall, soil moisture, soil gas flux after wetting and thawing, peak soil gas flux properties, and the corresponding study references. There is one comma-delimited data file.

Description

NOAA CoastWatch provides surface temperature products derived from NOAA's Polar Operational Environmental Satellites (POES). This data is provided at high resolution (0.0125 degrees) for the North Pacific Ocean. Measurements are gathered by the Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR) instrument, a multiband radiance sensor carried aboard the NOAA POES satellites. This product is provided before cloudmasking, and will contain sea surface temperature, land surface temperature, and cloud temperature data.

Description

The Pungo Unit, designated as a globally important bird area, hosts large populations of waterfowl species that were identified for live bird or mortality surveillance for the Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza H5N1 virus. Annually, over 100,000 migratory waterfowl winter on the Pungo Unit including 26,000 24 of the Eastern Population of Tundra Swans, 78,000 Greater Snow Geese and 20 species of ducks. Target species during the winter included Tundra Swans and other incidentally captured waterfowl species. During the spring and summer of 2008, target species included Wood Ducks during the banding season and other incidentally captured waterfowl i.e.; mallards. Live birds were captured with rocket nets. As per the National Wildlife Health Center protocol, separate cloacal and oropharyngeal swabs were collected on all captured waterfowl and placed in a single vial. In addition, USFWS bands were placed on all newly captured birds and recaptured bands were recorded appropriately. Other data collected included species, sex, and age. During the winter months, 120 Tundra Swans were livecaptured and swabbed. During the spring and summer months, 19 Wood Ducks were livecaptured and swabbed.
