Description

Polar bear harvests in Alaska coastal villages from November 1980 to April 1982. Hunters from 13 villages killed polar bears during this period. The documented minimum polar bear harvest for 198081 and 198182 hunting seasons were 106 and 90, respectively. A minimum of 21 bears were harvested from January 1 to July 30, 1980 ADFG records and have been included in the pooled sample of 217 killed bears. Of this total, 134 61.8 were bears for which complete sex and age information was obtained; 52 23.9 were bears for which adequate sex andor age class information was obtained; and 31 14.3 were bears known to have been killed for which sex and age information was unknown. The sample of 134 known sex and age bears consisted of 27 percent litter members cubs, yearlings, or 2year olds, 31 percent females greater than 3 years of age, and 42 percent males greater than 3 years of age. The sex ratio was 81 60.4 males to 53 39.6 females. The sex ratio of bears captured from 196776 in a tagging study Lentfer, 1977 was significantly different. The mean age of males and females was 7.3! 4.8 years. Male mean age was 5.8 3.9 years and female was 9.0 5.4 years. A significant inverse relationship was determined for harvested female cubs less than 3 years, female subadults, 45 years, and females age 610. A significant positive relationship was determined for harvested females 10 years or older, subadult males, and adult males 6 years or older. From January 1980 to April 1982 an average annual removal of 38 females occurred. This figure excluded 31 unknown sex and age bears. If the percentage of adult females of known sex and age bears is applied to the 31 excluded bears then the average annual female removal was 44 bears. Polar bears were harvested during each month of the year except September. Of 197 bears sampled, 123 62.4 were harvested during November, December, and January. Fortyfive bears 22.8 were harvested in October and November, primarily in the North Slope villages. Recent harvest chronology differs markedly from that of the sports hunting era when most bears were taken from February through April. Of the 124 hunters who killed 217 polar bear during 198082, 37 29.8 killed more than one bear; of these, 27 73.8 killed more than 2 bears. Snowmachines 89.5 were the most common hunting transportation form used, small boats 6.8 ranked second and other means accounted for the remainder of the harvest.

The objective of this study is to quantify population, community, and ecosystem level changes as a result of salmon recolonization of the Cedar River, WA above Landsburg Dam. The dam was installed in 1901, blocking the upstream migration of adult salmon and steelhead from about 43 km of river habitat. A fish ladder was installed in 2003 to allow adult salmon passage. We collected baseline data on water chemistry, habitat, isotopes (periphyton, invertebrates, fish, riparian trees) and resident trout and sculpin populations in 2000-2002. These studies have been ongoing since 2000. A mark-recapture study in Rock Creek, the largest tributary available to salmon, was started in 2004 to quantify growth, movement, and survival of juvenile coho and resident trout. This data set was developed in conjunction with the U.S. Department of Agriculture, Natural Resources Conservation Service, and meets the standards and specifications on the National Park Service Soil Inventory and Monitoring Program, and is intended to serve as the official database for all agency applications regarding our soils resources. This data set is a digital soil survey and generally is the most detailed level of soil geographic data developed by the National Cooperative Soil Survey. The information was prepared by digitizing maps, by compiling information onto a planimetric correct base and digitizing, or by revising digitized maps using remotely sensed and other information. This data set consists of georeferenced digital map data and computerized attribute data. The map data are in a soil survey area extent format and include a detailed, field verified inventory of soils and miscellaneous areas that normally occur in a repeatable pattern on the landscape and that can be cartographically shown at the scale mapped. A special soil features layer (point and line features) is optional. This layer displays the location of features too small to delineate at the mapping scale, but they are large enough and contrasting enough to significantly influence use and management. The soil map units are linked to attributes in the National Soil Information System relational database, which gives the proportionate extent of the component soils and their properties.

Under NASA STTR NNK07EA39C, ASR&D developed passive surface acoustic wave (SAW) based hydrogen sensors that utilize Pd nanocluster films on self-assembled siloxane monolayers to provide rapid, reversible room temperature responses to hydrogen exposure. Under NASA SBIR NNX09CE49P ASR&D demonstrated wireless interrogation of SAW RFID sensor-tags. In this project, we propose to combine the results of these two technology development programs to produce wireless, uniquely identifiable SAW-based hydrogen sensors, and to evaluate the sensor response time to low levels of hydrogen exposure (down to 1 ppm). ASR&D will also implement a SAW-based in-situ Pd deposition monitor for enhanced film reproducibility. ASR&D's previous hydrogen work was based on Argonne National Labs work with similar films that demonstrated hydrogen sensing from 25 ppm to over 2% hydrogen, with response times of milliseconds, complete reversibility, and no baseline drift at room temperature. ASR&D demonstrated the ability to measure changes in such films using a SAW sensor, however our ability to test at low hydrogen concentrations and at rates exceeding 1 sample/sec were limited by our experimental test equipment. In the proposed effort, we will utilize an Environics gas dilution system to generate calibrated gas concentrations (for hydrogen and methane) down to 1 ppm, and we will utilize the electronic interrogation system being developed for our RFID work to measure the sensors. This system is capable of measuring sensor responses with a good S/N in 1 msec (or less), overcoming the prior limitations of our testbench equipment. In addition to the hydrogen sensor work, working with Temple University, we propose to evaluate the technical feasibility of producing SAW-based methane sensors using a similar SAW sensor device, but incorporating methane selective supramolecular cryptophane films. Hydrogen sensors will be TRL4 at completion of the proposed effort, and methane sensors will be TRL 3.

Laser beach mapping uses a pulsed laser ranging system mounted onboard an aircraft to measure ground elevation and coastal topography. The laser emits laser beams at high frequency and is directed downward at the earth's surface through a port opening in the bottom of the aircraft's fuselage. The laser system records the time difference between emission of the laser beam and the reception of the reflected laser signal in the aircraft. The aircraft travels over the beach at approximately 60 meters per second while surveying from the low water line to the landward base of the sand dunes.

Predation by raccoons on nests of sea turtles on St. Vincent Island has long been noted. This destruction probably plays an important role in slowing the recovery of the endangered sea turtle population. In addition, the high raccoon concentration on the island represents am economic asset that could be used without jeopardizing the wildlife or reducing the aesthetic values of the refuge. Perhaps ultimately a reduction of the current level of population would be of benefit to the species by heading off an outbreak of an epizootic disease. Harvesting the fur crop on a sustained yield basis is an accepted procedure on many other refuges and could be made a part of the St. Vincent operations.

This data set consists of browse images acquired by the C-band Active Microwave Instrument (AMI) onboard the European Remote Sensing Satellite 2 (ERS-2) and provides only a general quality assessment of the ERS-2 AMI data. The Precision Images (PRIs) were used as a part of the Soil Moisture Experiment 2002 (SMEX02) and are available to research groups from the European Space Agency (ESA). The data were obtained over the SMEX02 study area in Iowa, USA on 31 May, 5 July, and 13 September 2002. These images are uncalibrated, subsets of the raw ERS-2 AMI PRIs. The images are a function of decibels (dB) and are intended for browsing locations and general features. They cannot be used to derive dB values; researchers interested in dB values must obtain the AMI data. These data were collected as part of a validation study for the Advanced Microwave Scanning Radiometer - Earth Observing System (AMSR-E). AMSR-E is a mission instrument launched aboard NASA's Aqua Satellite on 04 May 2002. AMSR-E validation studies linked to SMEX are designed to evaluate the accuracy of AMSR-E soil moisture data. Specific validation objectives include assessing and refining soil moisture algorithm performance; verifying soil moisture estimation accuracy; investigating the effects of vegetation, surface temperature, topography, and soil texture on soil moisture accuracy; and determining the regions that are useful for AMSR-E soil moisture measurements.
