The GRIP Flight Tracks and Animations dataset includes both KML files and animation files. The KML files use Google Earth to show the flight tracks on a map. The animations vary by type. Created by the Real-time Mission Monitor (RTMM) software, the .avi files show the flight track versus time superimposed over the GOES IR data. The National SubOrbital Education and Research Center provided a file in two formats (.mov, .mp4) viewing hurricane Earl from the NASA DC-8 aircraft. Also a NBC newscast informs the public of the GRIP's goals during the campaign.

Description

The Digital Flood Insurance Rate Map (DFIRM) Database depicts flood risk information and supporting data used to develop the risk data. The primary risk classifications used are the 1-percent-annual-chance flood event, the 0.2-percent-annual- chance flood event, and areas of minimal flood risk. The DFIRM Database is derived from Flood Insurance Studies (FISs), previously published Flood Insurance Rate Maps (FIRMs), flood hazard analyses performed in support of the FISs and FIRMs, and new mapping data, where available. The FISs and FIRMs are published by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). The file is georeferenced to earth's surface using the Universal Transverse Mercator Coordinate System (ZONE 17N) and Lambert Conformal conic projection. The specifications for the horizontal control of DFIRM data files are consistent with those required for mapping at a scale of 1:12,000.

This NASA SBIR Phase I program proposes the development of a high thermal conductivity (400 W/mK), low coefficient of thermal expansion (7-10 ppm/?K), and light weight (3-4 g/cm3) functionally graded material (FGM) heat sinks for microelectronic packaging applications. The uniquely defined ?FGM concept? pursued in this project uses a metallic package base that consists of a light metal matrix composite material to provide low thermal expansion and a high thermal conductivity functional core to cool the high power semiconductor die. The thermal performance of the heat sink is doubled by using the high thermal conductivity functional core bonded through the body of the heat sink.

Description

Diamond Data Systems (DDS) proposes the development of a new advanced architecture, algorithms and software to support the end-to-end processing of LIDAR data to derive useful information products such as Digital Elevation Models (DEM). The approach is innovative in three ways. First, it proposes a complete end-to-end system instead of a solution that addresses only a single step of the complex problem of accurately gathering, processing, and reporting of the data. Second, it proposes a system that is designed to minimize human interaction and manual data entry. Third (and possibly the most important) is that it proposes both the implementation of multiple algorithms to perform the data processing, as well as an extensible, open software architecture which allows algorithms to be incorporated into the system in the future. This approach allows for the development of a dynamic system which can be extended not only by DDS, but by third parties as well. Our proposal is relevant to topic E3.03 in that it provides for the efficient production of a DEM product from an active imaging system (LIDAR).

Description

Many springs associated with the Edwards Aquifer of Texas are inhabited by relict populations of neotenic salamanders in the genus Eurycea. This study was done to assess the water quality characteristics in habitat springs of Eurycea salamanders associated with various springs of the Edwards Aquifer. The goals of the study were to identify bioavailable contaminants associated with individual springs and to evaluate the effects of contaminants and sediment turbidity on the survival of springassociated salamanders. Collections of samples andor salamanders made from five habitat springs Barrow Hollow Springs, Barton Springs, Collapsed Bridge Springs, San Marcos Springs, and Stillhouse Hollow Springs from two counties in central Texas. Analyses were conducted to determine 1 the presence of organic contaminants in salamander habitat springs as determined with semipermeable membrane devices SPMDs, 2 survival effects for salamanders under incremental increases in sediment loads, and 3 relative sensitivities of salamanders to selected contaminants under controlled conditions in a laboratory setting. Measurable concentrations were found by SPMD determinations for 13 organochlorines, 5 polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons PAHs, and 2 pyrethroid pesticides for the five habitat springs. Three types of sediment slurry tests single 24h pulse, three 8h pulses, and continuous presence of sediment did not produce large biomass changes in two salamander species. Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons PAHs in sediment at Barton Springs were sufficiently elevated to impact the amphipod Hyalella azteca, a food source of the endangered Barton Springs salamander Eurycea sosorum. Although results from preliminary acute toxicity tests presented in this study would indicate that Eurycea salamander species are similar to or less sensitive to tested contaminants as compared to fish species, the test results have to be regarded as preliminary because of the small number of salamanders and contaminants used for testing. Due to the lack of existing information of sublethal effects of contaminants on neotenic salamanders, regulatory protective measures such as water quality criteria, pesticide use restrictions, etc. should be conservative with respect to protection of Eurycea species from water or sedimentborne contaminants. Additionally, considerations should be given to protection of the habitat including the salamanders prey base.

Description

Long shelf life food packaging is a critical to maintaining the crew's well being in NASA's manned missions to the mars. Not only does the packaging have to offer an effective means to preserve the food's nutrition and flavor over a long period of time, but the packaging material itself should be easily managed/recycled inside a confined environment like a space shuttle. Although metal cans have long been used for long term food storage in daily life, trash management poses a serious problem for NASA. Recently, biodegradable polymers attracted a lot of attention as an environmentally friendly packaging material. However, they are mainly used for short shelf life products because of poor barrier properties. To enhance its barrier protection properties to oxygen and water, in this SBIR project, we propose a new composite material of PLA coated with a thin layer of transparent and pin-hole free amorphous Al2O3. To improve PLA thermal properties and produce retorted polymer structures nanoparticles will be introduced in the polymer matrix. Moreover, to obtain the desired barrier properties for long shelf life food packaging a unique technique will be used to deposit Al2O3 films at substrate temperatures less than 80C. This effort will greatly enhance PLA's barrier properties to provide a unique high barrier packaging material with less mass and, more importantly, totally biodegradable. This technology is easily scalable and a successful commercialization will definitely benefit NASA's manned missions. Moreover, as an environmentally friendly packaging material, the technology has the potential to have a broad impact on society.

Work done at Water Resources Center, University of Minnesota has demonstrated the feasibility of performing regional assessment of lake water quality using Landsat imagery. Microtel LLC is proposing to tune algorithms available from this research to process imagery collected by NASA Advanced Land Imager (ALI) to generate water quality mappings (secchi depth transparency and chlorophyll a) of the Chesapeake Bay. Extensive ground truth measurements collected routinely and specifically during satellite overflights by Maryland DNR will be utilized to verify results. This proposal is innovative because it will determine the suitability of NASA earth science data for managers concerned with stewardship of the earth's inland water resources. This proposal is significant because it will develop innovative technology that allow the routine use of NASA Earth science results in automated water quality decision support tools. This proposal addresses solicitation subtopic E4.01 "Innovative Tools and Techniques Supporting the Practical Uses of Earth Science Observations". Accurate and timely water quality maps of the Chesapeake Bay will provide a valuable source of information for water management and policy decision makers.
