Description

This coverage contains information about the buried valleys within the Standing Rock Indian Reservation, Sioux County, North Dakota, and Corson County, South Dakota. The delineation of the buried valleys was included as part of the surficial geology map (figure 5) created by Howells (1982). The digital data were produced by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) in cooperation with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. Figure 5 in Howells (1982) was scanned and digitized on-screen to create this coverage. See cross reference information for more detail. According to the map credit for figure 5, the geology for Sioux County was based on soil maps prepared by the U.S. Bureau of Indian Affairs (1959), data collected by Randich (1975), and a geologic map by Carlson (1978). The geology for Corson County was based on soil maps prepared by the U.S. Bureau of Indian Affairs (1959) and unpublished maps of the U.S Soil Conservation Service, modified by test drilling and field reconnaissance.

Description

We propose to develop a new and innovative method for the detection and classification of emboli flowing into the brain through Carotid arteries, specifically for situations involving space traveling. The present technique does not utilize Doppler technique, rather the advanced pulse-echo ultrasound technique based on detecting the nonlinear parametric scattered ultrasound pulse-echo wave from emboli. The proposed technique is predicted to have a resolution more than 10 times better than that of the Doppler technique, and to be able to exactly measure the size of and classify the type of emboli. Furthermore, the implementation of the proposed technique into a Holter-monitor type device is predicted to be much easier than the Doppler technique. This Phase I study propose to investigate the feasibility of the proposed technique in vitro.

Description

In order to test hypotheses about groundwater flow under and into Chesapeake Bay, geophysical surveys were conducted by U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) scientists on Chesapeake Bay and the Potomac River Estuary in September 2006. Chesapeake Bay resource managers are concerned about nutrients that are entering the estuary via submarine groundwater discharge, which are contributing to eutrophication. The USGS has performed many related studies in recent years to provide managers with information necessary to make informed decisions about this issue. The research carried out as part of the study described here was designed to help refine nutrient budgets for Chesapeake Bay by characterizing submarine groundwater flow and discharge of groundwater beneath part of the mainstem and a major tributary, the Potomac River Estuary.

Using relative basal area by species of the 112 plots sampled across 11 stands at Seney NWR as part of the Rapid Ecological Assessment Corace et al. 2011, we used a MultiResponse Permutation Procedure MRPP to examine if there are differences in the overall overstory composition among the 11 stands. MRPP is a nonparametric technique that tests the hypothesis that there is no difference between groups of entities, in this case the overstory composition of stands at Seney NWR.

Description

Phase I demonstrated experimentally a very high temperature acoustically absorbing coating for ducted acoustics applications. High temperature survivability at 3500 deg F was demonstrated in the MSFC Plasma Jet Facility. Normal incidence acoustic absorption coefficient of 25 % was demonstrated in a standing wave test facility. Phase I work confirmed the possibility of production of acoustic coatings for application in ducted flows near the exhaust of a large rocket engine. The screening process for Phase I was unique in its emphasis on the practical development of a deliverable coating, as opposed to untested theoretical work or screening at unrealistic environmental conditions. In addition, work done late in Phase I produced a coating with an absorption coefficient of 47 % which has yet to be screened for high temperature survivability. Phase two has one objective and one deliverable: To produce and experimentally validate a fully working high temperature acoustical absorption duct lining material. Production involves optimizing the material through iterative reformulation, experimental validation involves acoustic and survival testing at conditions (specifically temperatures and sound intensities) relevant to the use environment. Additionally finite element modeling will be used to validate/refine the data collection apparatus as no such facility or testing has been done previously.

The Digital Flood Insurance Rate Map (DFIRM) Database depicts flood risk information and supporting data used to develop the risk data. The primary risk classifications used are the 1-percent-annual-chance flood event, the 0.2-percent-annual- chance flood event, and areas of minimal flood risk. The DFIRM Database is derived from Flood Insurance Studies (FISs), previously published Flood Insurance Rate Maps (FIRMs), flood hazard analyses performed in support of the FISs and FIRMs, and new mapping data, where available. The FISs and FIRMs are published by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). Spatial data is georeferenced to the earth surface using the Wisconsin Transverse Mercator projected coordinate system and the North American Datum of 1983. The specifications for the horizontal control of DFIRM data files are consistent with those required for mapping at a scale of 1:6000.
