Description

The USGS Woods Hole Science Center conducted a nearshore geophysical survey offshore of the southern coast of Martha's Vineyard, in the vicinity of the Martha's Vineyard Coastal Observatory (MVCO) in August 2007. This mapping program was part of a larger research effort supporting the Office of Naval Research (ONR) Ripples Directed-Research Initiative (DRI) studies at MVCO by providing data collection and modeling. The geophysical data will be used to provide initial conditions for wave and circulation models for the study area. Ultimately, geophysical mapping, oceanographic measurements and modeling will help to improve our understanding of coastal sediment-transport processes. The geophysical mapping utilized a suite of high-resolution instrumentation to map the surficial sediment distribution, depth and sub-surface geology: dual-frequency 100/500 KHz sidescan-sonar system, 234-KHz interferometric sonar, and 500 Hz -12 KHz chirp sub-bottom profiler. The survey was conducted aboard the M/V Megan Miller August 9-13, 2007. The study area covers 35 square kilometers from about 0.2 km to 5-km offshore of the south shore of Martha's Vineyard, and ranges in depth from ~ 5 to 20 meters.

The Census Bureau includes landmarks in the MTDB for locating special features and to help enumerators during field operations. Some of the more common landmark types include area landmarks such as airports, cemeteries, parks, schools, and churches and other religious institutions. The Census Bureau added landmark features to MTDB on an as-needed basis and made no attempt to ensure that all instances of a particular feature were included. The presence or absence of a landmark such as a hospital or prison does not mean that the living quarters associated with that landmark were geocoded to that census tabulation block or excluded from the census enumeration. The Area Landmark Shapefile does not include military installations or water bodies because they each appear in their own separate shapefiles, MIL.shp and AREAWATER.shp respectively. The TIGER/Line shapefiles and related database files (.dbf) are an extract of selected geographic and cartographic information from the U.S. Census Bureau's Master Address File / Topologically Integrated Geographic Encoding and Referencing (MAF/TIGER) Database (MTDB). The MTDB represents a seamless national file with no overlaps or gaps between parts, however, each TIGER/Line shapefile is designed to stand alone as an independent data set, or they can be combined to cover the entire nation.

This project will investigate an entirely new battery chemistry by developing A Martian Air Battery. Specifically the project will explore the concept of a Martian battery that utilizes in-situ resources to produce energy for NASA applications. Our experience producing high-energy air cathodes for our work with existing metal-air systems will be utilized during this program. Our established air cathodes will be modified, to accommodate a Martian environment, and incorporated into cells. Several different chemically composed cathodes will be investigated. The anticipated result of the phase 1 project is a new battery. Advantages of the proposed Martian battery include a light weight source for in-situ energy production. In addition the conceptual battery will be capable of atmospheric gas collection and separation.

ICE DRO (Detention and Removal Operations) is responsible for ensuring that deportable aliens in the U.S. are removed in a timely manner. Non-criminal aliens can undergo a removal process. Before the alien can be sent back to his or her home country, a travel document must be prepared with the help of the home country¿s consulate. In the past, this process was paper-based ¿ the travel document was sent to the consulate to be signed, and once it was signed it was sent back to the detention facility. The intent of the Electronic Travel Document (eTD) system is to accelerate this process by making the travel documents available in digital form. The form is viewed in electronic form by the consular user and signed using a digital signature pad. In addition, scanning and image capturing is built into the system to create a fully electronic process.

The United States Geological Survey (USGS) is working cooperatively with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) to interpret the surficial geology in estuaries along the coast of the northeastern United States. The purpose of our present study is to define the sea floor morphology and sedimentary environments in an area of Rhode Island Sound using sidescan sonar imagery, multibeam bathymetry and seismic records. The mosaic, bathymetry, and their interpretations serve many purposes, including: (1) defining the geological variability of the sea floor, which is one of the primary controls of benthic habitat diversity; (2) improving our understanding of the processes that control the distribution and transport of bottom sediments and the distribution of benthic habitats and associated infaunal community structures; and (3) providing a detailed framework for future research, monitoring, and management activities. The sidescan sonar mosaics and bathymetry images also serve as base maps for subsequent sedimentological, geochemical, and biological observations, because precise information on environmental setting is important for selection of sampling sites and for accurate interpretations of point measurements.

The Strong Motion Earthquake Data Values of Digitized Strong-Motion Accelerograms is a database of over 15,000 digitized and processed accelerograph records from 1933 to 1994. Data were obtained from a variety of structural and geologic environments. Most of the data are available in three levels of processed files. The first type of file contains raw (uncorrected) time, history data points digitized from the analog accelerogram. The second is a filtered, instrument corrected version of the time, history data. This file also contains calculated velocities and displacements obtained by the integration and double integration of the corrected accelerations. The third type of file includes the calculated Fourier and response spectra data. The data are from the United States, Algeria, Argentina, Armenia, Australia, Bulgaria, Canada, Chile, China, El Salvador, Fiji, Germany, Greece, India, Iran, Italy, Japan, Mexico, New Zealand, Nicaragua, Papua New Guinea, Peru, Portugal, Romania, Spain, Taiwan, Turkey, and Uzbekistan. This database is static and is no longer being updated.

The Global Drifter Program consists of the two components: The Drifter Data Assembly Center and the Operations Center. The primary goal of the DAC is to assemble and provide uniform quality control of sea surface temperature (SST) and surface velocity measurements. These measurements are obtained as part of an international program designed to make these data available in an effort to improve climate prediction. Climate prediction models require accurate estimates of SST to initialize their ocean component. Drifting buoys provide essential ground truth SST data for this purpose. The models also require validation by comparison with independent data sets. Surface velocity measurements are used for this validation. The AOML Drifter Operations Center manages the deployment of drifting buoys around the world. Using research ships, Volunteer Observation Ships (VOS) and aircraft, Lagrangian drifters are placed in areas of interest. Once verified operational, they are reported to AOML's Drifter Data Assembly Center. Incoming data from the drifters are then placed on the Global Telecommunications System (GTS) for distribution to meteorological services everywhere.

<p>The objective of this IRAD is to establish in-house onboard OpNav measurement data processing capabilities through software development and testing.  Software development will include: 1) celestial and terrain-relative OpNav data processing, 2) high-fidelity camera modeling, and 3) onboard orbit determination software integration and testing.</p><p>Upon successful completion of this IRAD, enhancements to the Goddard Enhanced Onboard Navigation System (GEONS) will allow onboard orbit determination using optical navigation image data for interplanetary and small body spacecraft operations.  GEONS will ingest and process celestial and terrain-relative OpNav data in the form of control points (pixel/line) located in an image.  The processed measurements are then used to supplement radiometric data in the onboard orbit determination solution and produce real-time estimates of the spacecraft’s position and velocity relative to the target body.  The resulting navigation solutions will enable near-real time control, maneuver planning, and hazard avoidance for complex proximity operations.  GEONS was chosen as the target platform because of its high heritage and operational use as an onboard spacecraft navigation system.</p>

Ridgetop will demonstrate the feasibility of developing a radiation-hardened analog-to-digital converter (ADC) suitable for the Jupiter Europa Orbiter mission. This proposal responds to topic S1.09, In-Situ Sensors and Sensor Systems for Planetary Science. With this innovation, the ADC will be hardened to significantly higher levels of radiation (5 Mrads) than currently existing ADCs, and its performance will still clearly exceed the performance of ADCs used previously on NASA planetary missions. The ADC will have 12-bit resolution, 125 MSPS sampling speed, and low 150 mW power consumption. The ADC will be designed on the IBM 8HP 130 nm silicon germanium (SiGe) fabrication process, which has been shown to be tolerant to very high levels of total ionizing dose (TID) radiation and suitable for wide temperature range operation. At the end of Phase 1, the proven mixed-signal circuits will provide momentum to create an radiation-hardened, transistor-level ADC design in a follow-on SBIR Phase 2 Program, in which the ADC will be fabricated in the IBM 8HP 130 nm BiCMOS SiGe process and tested.

The Digital Flood Insurance Rate Map (DFIRM) Database depicts flood risk information and supporting data used to develop the risk data. The primary risk classifications used are the 1-percent-annual-chance flood event, the 0.2-percent-annual- chance flood event, and areas of minimal flood risk. The DFIRM Database is derived from Flood Insurance Studies (FISs), previously published Flood Insurance Rate Maps (FIRMs), flood hazard analyses performed in support of the FISs and FIRMs, and new mapping data, where available. The FISs and FIRMs are published by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). <p>This element involves the development of software that enables easier commanding of a wide range of NASA relevant robots through the Robot Application Programming Interface Delegate (RAPID) robot messaging system and infusing the developed software into flight projects.  In June and July of 2013, RAPID was tested on ISS as the robot messaging software for the Technology Demonstration Mission (TDM) Human Exploration Telerobotics (HET) Surface Telerobotics experiment.  RAPID has also been made available to — and integrated with — the Robot Operating System (ROS), a popular software framework for developing state-of-the-art robots for ground and space. While ROS powers a number of new robots and components such as Robonaut 2’s climbing legs and R5, the addition of RAPID allows these robots to interoperate in collaborative human-robot teams, safely and effectively over time-delayed communications links. The objective this year is to take this space-tested software and extend it to providing video streaming from remote robots and delivering this new capability to the Exploration Ground Data Systems (xGDS) area within HRS.  xGDS will then deliver its software to Science Mission Directorate (SMD) funded field tests to improve the technology readiness moving leading (potentially) to being used for the Lunar Prospector Mission ground data systems.  Success will involve delivering RAPID to xGDS and then xGDS supporting SMD field test.</p><p>The team is also developing algorithms for sensors capable of reconstructing remote worlds and efficiently shipping that remote environment back to earth using the RAPID robot messaging system.  This type of system could eventually lead to scientists on earth gain new insights as they are able to step into the remote world.  This sensor also has the ability to engage the public, bringing remote worlds back to earth.  During FY13, this task used science operations personnel from current SMD projects to objectively measure improvement in remote science target selection and decision-making based. The team continues to work with SMD projects to ensure that the technologies being developed are directly responsive to SMD project personnel needs. The objective of this work in FY14 is to expand the range of science operations tasks addressed by the technology, and to perform laboratory demonstrations for JPL/SMD stakeholders of the immersive visualization of data from a sensor using an SMD representative environment.</p><p>During 2014, the “Controlling<em> Robots Over Time Delay”</em> project element will develop two technologies:</p><ul><li>Develop RAPID robot messaging for unified cross-center operations platform for TDM, xGDS, and CCSDS</li><li>Sensor Systems for the Construction of Immersive Virtual Environments</li></ul>

The VirexLab, the centerpiece of this Tietronix proposal offers significant innovation to NASA and to the Marshall Space Flight Center, implementing the Biological and Physical Research Enterprise education and outreach activities. VirexLab will be a collection of rich immersive settings with both hands-on and virtual components. These settings will focus on science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) learning objectives. The objectives will integrate learning across the boundaries of subject matter, platform (setting), and institution yielding intellectual merit rarely seen in a single learning tool, an innovation in OBPR?s educational excellence. Tietronix proposes to develop a Virtual Reality (VR) educational system that can be used in multiple formats such as multimedia CD-ROMs, kiosks for museum settings, VR stations, and web sites that can be accessed from anywhere in the world. The VR lab would allow the students to experiment with devices as if in the microgravity of space or Earth gravity. The significance of our proposed innovations is that learners, both students and adult life-long learners, will participate in hands-on, immersive environments to experience NASA?s missions and discoveries.
