MBT data were collected from the USS WARBLER in support of the Fleet Observations of Oceanographic Data (FLOOD) project. Data were collected by US Navy; Ships of Opportunity from 24 February 1964 to 11 March 1964. The platform was equipped and staffed to observe weather and sea conditions. Data were processed by NODC to the NODC standard Universal Bathythermograph Output (UBT) format. Full format description is available from NODC at www.nodc.noaa.gov/General/NODC-Archive/bt.html. The UBT file format is used for temperature-depth profile data obtained using the mechanical bathythermograph (MBT) instrument. The maximum depth of MBT observations is approximately 285 m. Therefore, MBT data are useful only in studying the thermal structure of the upper layers of the ocean. Cruise information, date, position, and time are reported for each observation. The data record comprises pairs of temperature-depth values. Temperature data in this file are recorded at uniform 5 m depth intervals.

Data were collected from from 25 April 1988 to 15 May 1988 by the University of Alaska - Fairbanks; Institute of Marine Science (UAK/IMS) as part of the Outer Continental Shelf Environmental Assessment Program (OCSEAP )and the Gulf of Alaska-1 (GAK-1) projects.

The data contained here are surface marine observations from many different sources via the NCDC Global Telecommunication System (GTS) Marine in International Maritime Meteorological Archive (IMMA) format. The observations are obtained exclusively via the NCDC GTS stream and derives primarily from ships (merchant, ocean research, fishing, navy, etc.) and moored and drifting buoys. Each report contains individual observations of meteorological and oceanographic variables, such as sea surface and air temperatures, winds, pressure, humidity, wet bulb, dew point, ocean waves and cloudiness. NCDC takes the various observations and converts the GTS data to a standard IMMA format. This allows the observations to be used in a cohesive standard for input to larger datasets, such as the International Comprehensive Ocean-Atmosphere Data Set (ICOADS) Near-Real-Time (NRT) product. The dataset will be produced and archived monthly. Spatial coverage is global and the current period of record for these files will begin in January 2008 to the most current month. The data will be formated to the most current IMMA standard in ASCII file format.

NOAA CoastWatch distributes near real time Ekman current (in zonal, meridional, and modulus sets) and Ekman upwelling data. This data begins with wind velocity measurements from the ASCAT instrument onboard EUMETSAT's ASCAT satellite. ASCAT is a microwave scatterometer designed to measure surface winds over the global ocean. NOAA CoastWatch processes wind velocity to wind stress and wind stress curl, and finally to Ekman current and Ekman upwelling.

NODC accession 0104317 includes physical and underway data collected aboard the OCEANUS during cruise OC453 in the North Atlantic Ocean from 2009-06-17 to 2009-07-03. These data include CURRENT SPEED - EAST/WEST COMPONENT (U) and CURRENT SPEED - NORTH/SOUTH COMPONENT (V). The instruments used to collect these data include ADCP and GPS. These data were collected by William J. Teague of US NAVY; NAVAL RESEARCH LABORATORY - WASHINGTON DC, and by Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution as part of Forecasting Magnetic Fields Generated By Submesoscale Hydrodynamics. The Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory (LDEO) submitted these data to NODC as part of the NSF sponsored Rolling Deck to Repository (R2R) program. The ADCP data represent the raw and automated processed data set. Post processed quality assessed data are not available in this accession.
