Description

The Lower Souris Migratory Waterfowl Refuge now known as the J. Clark Salyer National Wildlife Refuge is located just south of the Canadian border in North Dakota. The refuge was established and constructed by the CCC in 1935 to restore waterfowl habitat. This report gives an overview of events taking place on the refuge in November, December and January of 1938 and 1939. The winter has been relatively warm. As a result the ducks stayed later than usual. Game birds have been using the feeding stations regularly and have had a significant increase in population. Predator control work has slowed due to the loss of the best trapper. Very little active birdbanding has been done during this period except for work on the sharptailed grouse. Fencing work continued into December and consisted of regular boundary fencing plus some work on easements to water. Other major development projects included patrol road construction, dam repairs and timber stand improvement. Continuing projects such as plantings, sharecropping, feeding and seeding occurred. The report concludes with a photographs section.

The refuge was established and constructed by the CCC in 1935 to restore waterfowl habitat. This report gives an overview of events taking place on the refuge in January of 1938. The month was mild, for a winter. Not one day was lost from the regular programs. The lack of snow, however, is proving to be worrisome for water levels in the coming spring. The cover mapping project was completed for 24 of the settlements made over the summer. The ten feeding stations have all been formed and are being used by the birds. In addition, the Highway 5 job was completed this month. A large crew of men have been kept at work in the woods thinning and cutting timber. The predator control program has also continued, with less success than in previous years. A series of photographs from December conclude the report.

The Lower Souris Migratory Waterfowl Refuge now known as the J. Clark Salyer National Wildlife Refuge is located just south of the Canadian border in North Dakota. The refuge was established and constructed by the CCC in 1935 to restore waterfowl habitat. This report gives an overview of events taking place on the refuge since June 1, 1936. Actual development work on the Lower Souris Refuge has been in progress for approximately a year. Over the course of the year, many miles of marshland were flooded, ducks have taken residence at the refuge, and many development projects have taken place. Much time was taken to improve habitat through nesting islands, nest boxes and fish shelters. Other projects focused on vegetation by means of seed collection and reforestation. A feed crop planting program was enacted and had been carried out as far as was practical. In addition, erosion control became a large concern due to the droughts, overgrazing and winds. Windbreaks were constructed in areas of concern andor trees were planted. The refuge headquarters took shape complete with an equipment shed and a goose pen. The report concludes with an update on refuge wildlife.

The refuge was established and constructed by the CCC in 1935 to restore waterfowl habitat. This report gives an overview of events taking place on the refuge in July of 1935. The report begins with a brief description of the refuge including photographs of the different habitats that are found. Progress is being made on the recruitment of waterfowl. The nesting and rearing conditions for ducks on the refuge were much better than in previous years; a table of observed broods is included. Predation is still an area to be monitored, though most of the predators in the area during July were beneficial or in such low numbers they were little cause for concern. Cover of grasses and weeds were especially abundant due to the plentiful rains the refuge received. Wildlife and habitat improvements continued through construction of nesting islands and boxes as well as plantings for waterfowl food.

The refuge was established and constructed by the CCC in 1935 to restore waterfowl habitat. This report gives an overview of events taking place on the refuge in August of 1937. The weather in August was very hot with strong winds and little rainfall. The marsh water levels dropped significantly, raising much concern. A hail storm destroyed an entire barley field and killed hundreds of birds. Duck nesting continued to be monitored. Overall nesting increased but not to the extent that refuge staff anticipated. A cover mapping project took place over the summer by Mr. Max Johnson results not included in the report. Dam 357 in near completion, efforts are focused on the riprap and aprons at the gates. In addition, the Lookout tower project was completed in August. Other projects included seed collection, crop farming, truck trail construction, the State Highway 5 project and public relations efforts. The report concludes with a photographs section.

The Lower Souris Migratory Waterfowl Refuge now known as the J. Clark Salyer National Wildlife Refuge is located just south of the Canadian border in North Dakota. The refuge was established and constructed by the CCC in 1935 to restore waterfowl habitat. This report gives an overview of events taking place on the refuge in June of 1937. The runoff from the spring was poor and the evidence was apparent with low water levels in the marsh. Though environmental conditions were poor, there seemed to be high levels of nesting. Included are nesting records for the last three years. The cement work for Dam 357 was completed and is in its final phase of completion. Predator control operations continued on a much reduced scale during June and will be suspended after July 1st, except for snapping turtles and crows. A photograph section concludes this report.

Description

In this report an attempt has been made to summarize some of the notes made during the nesting studies at the Lower Souris Refuge in 1937. While assisting Mr. Kalmbach in this work, a separate copy of field notes was kept by the writer. The information given here will at least be partly duplicated when Mr. Kalmbach prepares his notes some time in the future. However, this report has been prepared principally for the is on the refuge and as a Divisional Repot, rather than for a more general application. Comparisons have been made between this years work and the results of Mr. Kalmbachs studies last year, as well as his Canadian Studies, some notes of which were given in the 1936 report left at the refuge.

The refuge was established and constructed by the CCC in 1935 to restore waterfowl habitat. This report gives an overview of events taking place on the refuge in September of 1937. The finest weather of the year occurred in September, with mild temperatures and excellent working conditions. The duck migration was rather interesting with a late surge of migrants at the end of the month. Dam 357 was finally completed after many months of work and the fencing project continued with over five miles of fencing put in. A small tworoom house was rebuilt near the Sandhills lookout tower to provide trappers and other staff with a place to stay. Seed collection was not as productive as in previous years due to lack of men. Other projects included planting, boundary markers, truck trails and the State Highway 5 crossing. The report concludes with a photographs section.

The refuge was established and constructed by the CCC in 1935 to restore waterfowl habitat. This report gives an overview of events taking place on the refuge in August of 1936. A great deal of time was taken in August by Public Relations work. Due to the abundance of hay on the refuge, hundreds of farmers came to see about the possibility of securing some. The drought continued, causing cracks in the soil up to four inches in width. Major projects on the refuge included dam building and fencing. Like in July, duck and other waterfowl rescue operations took place as the ponds, sloughs and streams continued to go dry. Other areas of focus included erosion control and seed collection. .The report concludes with a photographs section.

The Lower Souris Migratory Waterfowl Refuge now known as the J. Clark Salyer National Wildlife Refuge is located just south of the Canadian border in North Dakota. The refuge was established and constructed by the CCC in 1935 to restore waterfowl habitat. This report gives an overview of events taking place on the refuge in March of 1937. Preparatory work began on Dam 357 and fencing efforts started up again. Artificial islands, already installed, were partially covered with gravel to provide grit for birds. A section on income from products discusses proceeds from fur and hay harvests. The cold weather allowed for productive time indoors building furniture and signs for the recreation area. Predator control efforts were much more successful than in February. Following the photographs in this report is a paper on refuge problems in the area.
