This investigation was completed in 2010, and a final report was submitted to NASA.

The purpose of this investigation was to quantify the joint kinematics and kinetics that occur during squat and deadlift exercise on the ARED to inform a future proposal that will include a biomechanical analysis of exercise on the ISS. Six subjects (3m/3f) were tested while performing single legged squats, normal squats, increased range of motion squats, wide stance squats, fast squats, reduced range of motion squats, normal deadlift, and sumo deadlift. Ground reaction force (GRF) and motion capture data were collected as each subject performed a single repetition using a load that approximated their 10 repetition maximum. Testing loads were determined during an earlier training session. Three dimensional joint kinematics and kinetics were computed using a standard inverse dynamics approach. GRF data indicated that peak loads were dependent upon exercise type and that the peak GRF did not always occur at the same time during a repetition depending upon the exercise. Bilateral joint kinematics were generally symmetrical; however, hip adduction and rotation displayed increased bilateral asymmetry. Joint kinetics differed between exercise types although there were no specific trends across all variables. In general during the downward motion, work was performed on the hip and knee extensors for all exercises, and work was performed by the hip and knee extensors during the upward motion. Positive and negative work for hip adduction/abduction, hip internal/external rotation, and ankle flexion varied across exercises. Bilateral joint kinetics were asymmetrical, which may reflect a property of ARED that needs further study.

Based on our results, we suggest that the exercises included in a future flight study include, along with the justification:

1) Normal Squat: A baseline measure

2) Single Legged Squat: Increased net hip torque and only exercise inducing hip adduction

3) Wide Normal Squat: Hip adduction and rotation kinematics suggest femoral head loading differences

4) Normal Deadlift: Baseline measure, but with different kinematics than the squat

Furthermore, we suggest the following:

1) Increasing the subject size of the current study to allow for standard statistical analyses

2) Retest of current subjects bilateral symmetry using a free weight condition

3) Further study of the FS condition relative to free weights to better understand joint kinetic differences

Although IR squats had larger kinetic values than others, variation was also increased because of between subject differences. We did not recommend this lift because of the larger subject variation, but this lift should also be considered in a future study.

The Acoustic and Electro-Optic Propagation Range Site (AEOPRS) is a pair of ranges that conduct experiments relating to the effects of various environmental conditions on acoustic and electro-optic (EO) propagation. The ranges can be instrumented to measure the atmospheric conditions and acoustic/EO signals that have propagated through the complex environment: in particular, a littoral region. The AEOPRS provides the ability to collect detailed meteorological/acoustic/EO data for the development of state-of-the-art models and the evaluation of current acoustic/EO models. The AEOPRS is also the primary site for the Mobile Acoustic Source (MOAS), a system with environmental capabilities that exist in no other system in the world. It is a pneumatic loudspeaker system that allows scientists to verify acoustic models of atmospheric effects. The system is a true exponential horn. It generates sound sufficient for testing acoustic propagation of sources.

A Multiscale GasKinetic/Particle (MGP) computational method is proposed to simulate the plume-crater-interaction/dust-impingement(PCIDI) problem. The MGP method consists of a multiscale gaskinetic (MG) method for gasdynamics of rocket plume-in-vacuum flowfield, an Overlay method for gas-particle interaction. MG combines BGK Gaskinetics (BGK) and direct simulation Monte Carlo (DSMC) methods with a domain decomposition technique to account for various scales of rarefied gasdynamics, covering continuum to free-molecular regimes. The dust particles are modeled by an additional distribution function in BGK, thus carried by the MG-generated flowfield through an overlay method. Dust properties are to be modeled using Discrete Element Method (DEM) simulation, which will lead to comprehensive continuum equations for crater formation. Phase II will extend the present MGP method to 3D, with more advanced dust particle properties and complex crater formulation.

Bathymetry for Great South Bay was derived from thirteen surveys containing124,314 soundings. Nineteen older, less accurate, overlapping surveys wereomitted, and the overlap from three older, less accurate surveys wasomitted before tinning the data. The average separation between soundingswas 53 meters. Three surveys in the east and two in the southwest datedfrom 1933 or 1934. The remaining eight surveys dated from 1949 to 1951. Thetotal range of sounding data was 0.9 to - 22.6 meters at mean low water. Mean highwater values between 0.2 and 1.2 meters were assigned to the shoreline. Six points werefound that were not consistent with the surrounding data. These were removed prior to tinning. DEM gridvalues outside the shoreline (on land) were assigned null values (-32676).Great South Bay has sixteen 7.5 minute DEMs and two one degreeDEMs. The 1 degree DEMs were generated from the higher resolution 7.5minute DEMs which covered the estuary. A Digital Elevation Model(DEM) contains a series of elevations ordered from south to northwith the order of the columns from west to east. The DEM isformatted as one ASCII header record (A- record), followed by aseries of profile records (B- records) each of which include a shortB-record header followed by a series of ASCII integer elevations(typically in units of 1 centimeter) per each profile. The lastphysical record of the DEM is an accuracy record (C-record).The 7.5-minute DEM (30- by 30-m data spacing) is cast on theUniversal Transverse Mercator (UTM) projection. It provides coveragein 7.5- by 7.5-minute blocks. Each product provides the samecoverage as a standard USGS 7.5-minute quadrangle but the DEMcontains over edge data. Coverage is available for many estuaries ofthe contiguous United States but is not complete.

Various shipping zones delineate activities and regulations for marine vessel traffic. Traffic lanes define specific traffic flow, while traffic separation zones assist opposing streams of marine traffic. Precautionary areas represent areas where ships must navigate with caution, and shipping safety fairways designate where artificial structures are prohibited. Recommended Routes are predetermined routes for shipping adopted for reasons of safety. Along certain zones of the East Coast of the United States, ships are required to reduce speeds to 10 knots or less over ground during seasonal periods within designated endangered species areas, such as the North Atlantic Right Whales. Particularly Sensitive Sea Areas need special protection because of their vulnerability to damage by international maritime activities. Areas to be avoided are within defined limits where navigation is particularly hazardous or it is exceptionally important to avoid casualties and should be avoided by all ships or certain classes of ships.

Laser Mapping Specialist, Inc (LMSI) collected 230 square miles in the Virginia counties of Fluvanna, Orange, Louisa, and Spotsylvania. The nominal pulse spacing for this project was no greater than 0.7 meters. Dewberry used proprietary procedures to classify the LAS into an initial ground surface. Dewberry used proprietary procedures to classify the LAS and then performed manual classifications according to project specifications: 1-Unclassified, 2-Ground, 7-Noise, 9-Water, and 10-Ignored Ground due to breakline proximity. The LiDAR data were processed to a bare-earth digital terrain model (DTM). Detailed breaklines and bare-earth Digital Elevation Models (DEMs) were produced for the project area. Deliverables were produced in both UTM and State Plane coordinates. The data was formatted according to tiles with each UTM tile covering an area of 1,500 meters by 1,500 meters and each State Plane tile covering an area of 5,000 feet by 5,000 feet. A total of 320 UTM tiles and 313 State Plane tiles were produced for the project encompassing an area of approximately 230 sq. miles.
