The Joint Airborne Lidar Bathymetry Technical Center of Expertise (JALBTCX) has performed a coastal survey along the Atlantic coast of MA in 2011. The data types collected include bathymetry and topographic lidar point data, true color imagery and hyperspectral imagery. The collection effort follows the coastline and extends 500m inland and 1000m offshore or to laser extinction, whichever comes first. Topographic lidar is collected with 200% coverage, yielding a nominal 1m x 1m post-spacing. Where water conditions permit, the bathymetry lidar data will have a nominal post spacing of 4m x 4m. The true color imagery will have a pixel size approximately 35cm and the hyperspectral imagery will be provided in 1m pixels containing 36 bands between 375 - 1050 nm with 19 nm bandwidth. The final data will be tied to horizontal positions, provided in decimal degrees of latitude and longitude, and are referenced to the North American Datum of 1983 (NAD83). Vertical positions are referenced to the NAD83 ellipsoid and provided in meters. The National Geodetic Survey's (NGS) GEOID03 model is used to transform the vertical positions from ellipsoid to orthometric heights referenced to the North American Vertical Datum of 1988 (NAVD88).

Bathymetry for the St. Johns River was derived from thirty-two surveyscontaining 158,931 soundings. No surveys were omitted. The averageseparation between soundings was 66 meters. Twenty-nine of the thirty-threesurveys dated from 1935 to 1939. The remaining surveys, located in the north, dated from 1958 or 1959. The total range of sounding data was 0.6 meters to - 24.7 meters atmean low water. Mean high water values between 0.0 and 1.4 meters were assigned to the shoreline. Seven points were found that were not consistent with the surrounding data. These were removed prior to tinning. DEM grid values outside the shoreline (on land) were assigned null values (-32676).The St. Johns River has twenty-nine 7.5 minute DEMs and two onedegree DEMs. The 1 degree DEMs were generated from the higherresolution 7.5 minute DEMs which covered the estuary. A DigitalElevation Model (DEM) contains a series of elevations ordered fromsouth to north with the order of the columns from west to east. TheDEM is formatted as one ASCII header record (A- record), followed bya series of profile records (B- records) each of which include ashort B-record header followed by a series of ASCII integerelevations (typically in units of 1 centimeter) per each profile. The last physical record of the DEM is an accuracy record(C-record).The 7.5-minute DEM (30- by 30-m data spacing) is cast on theUniversal Transverse Mercator (UTM) projection. It provides coveragein 7.5- by 7.5-minute blocks. Each product provides the samecoverage as a standard USGS 7.5-minute quadrangle but the DEMcontains over edge data. Coverage is available for many estuaries ofthe contiguous United States but is not complete.

The USGS and the NGA have collaborated on the development of a notably enhanced global elevation model named the GMTED2010 that replaces GTOPO30 as the elevation dataset of choice for global and continental scale applications. The new model has been generated at three separate resolutions (horizontal post spacing) of 30 arc-seconds (about 1 kilometer), 15 arc-seconds (about 500 meters), and 7.5 arc-seconds (about 250 meters). This new product suite provides global coverage of all land areas from lat 84 degrees N to 56 degrees S for most products, and coverage from 84 degrees N to 90 degrees S for several products. Some areas, namely Greenland and Antarctica, do not have data available at the 15- and 7.5-arc-second resolutions because the input source data do not support that level of detail. An additional advantage of the new multi-resolution global model over GTOPO30 is that seven new raster elevation products are available at each resolution. The new elevation products have been produced using the following aggregation methods: minimum elevation, maximum elevation, mean elevation, median elevation, standard deviation of elevation, systematic subsample, and breakline emphasis. The systematic subsample product is defined using a nearest neighbor resampling function, whereby an actual elevation value is extracted from the input source at the center of a processing window. Most vertical heights in GMTED2010 are referenced to the Earth Gravitational Model 1996 (EGM 96) geoid (NGA, 2010). In addition to the elevation products, detailed spatially referenced metadata containing attribute fields such as coordinates, projection information, and raw source elevation statistics have been generated on a tile-by-tile basis for all the input datasets that constitute the global elevation model. GMTED2010 is based on data derived from 11 raster-based elevation sources.

Between 1988 and 1990 the Daphne, Alabama Field Office, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service FWS conducted a contaminant study on the Tombigbee River near McIntosh, Alabama. Fish and sediment samples were collected and analyzed for mercury and DDT, two contaminants determined from earlier investigations as occurring in the rivers biota at concentrations of concern. The results of our study are presented in the enclosed report entitled An Evaluation of Mercury and DDT Contamination in Fish and Sediments Collected from the Tombigbee River Near McIntosh, Alabama. Total DDT concentrations in whole body samples of largemouth bass ranged from 0.36 ppm to 34.52 ppm.parts per million. Levels in the edible portions, filets, were considerably less ranging from 0.08 ppm to 2.22 ppm. Approximately 50 of the fish collected during the 1990 survey were found with DDE residues exceeding 3.0 ppm, a concentration documented as causing egg shell thinning in consuming avian species. As a result, fish eating species, i.e., bald eagles, herons, egrets, etc., forging in this area of the river could be subject to a decrease in reproductive success. Detectable levels of mercury were found in all fish samples analyzed. Contrary to the DDT findings, the higher mercury values occurred in the edible portions rather than the whole body. Concentrations in filet samples ranged from 0.08 ppm to 0.67 ppm with a mean of 0.37 ppm while whole body samples ranged from 0.07 ppm to 0.50 ppm with a mean of 0.23 ppm. In addition, whole body mercury concentrations of 1.89 ppm have been reported in fish collected from a lake within the study area that is flooded during annual high river stages. FWS research investigations have documented that reproduction in waterfowl has been significantly impaired when the birds were fed a diet containing 0.50 ppm mercury. The aforementioned lake provides an apparently attractive wintering habitat for a number of ducks and wading birds that eat fish and invertebrates. There is a concern that the mercury concentrations in the lakes biota could be adversely affecting the reproduction of these birds. Since 1964 the Fish and Wildlife Service has maintained a national monitoring network collecting fish samples throughout the country. These samples are analyzed for a number of contaminants including DDT and mercury. One of the network stations is located on the Alabama River at Chrysler, Alabama, which is a drainage adjacent to the Tombigbee River. In contrast to the elevated levels of contaminants in the Tombigbee River, during the period of record for the network, DDT concentrations in fish taken at Chrysler have not exceeded 0.32 ppm and mercury has not been found above 0.22 ppm. The FWS is anticipating conducting additional studies to track the migration of these contaminants through the higher trophic levels of the food web, principally avian species foraging along the river system.

This dataset represents lineaments in the Powder River Basin as identified in the following publication: Slack, P. B., 1981, Paleotectonics and hydrocarbon accumulation, Powder River basin, Wyoming: American Association of Petroleum Geologists Bulletin, v. 65, no. 4, p. 730-743. A lineament is defined as a linear topographic feature of regional extent that is believed to reflect crustal structure (Hobbs et al., 1976, p. 267). Lineament features were transferred from the publication to a hard-copy base map by province geologist, then digitized and referenced for use in a Geographic Information System (GIS). Lineaments may: 1) enhance secondary reservoir permeability and 2) provide migration pathways in unconventional rocks.

In the springs of 1992 and 1993 ten clutches of wood duck eggs were collected from the lower Roanoke River below a kraft process pulp paper mill that had historically bleached with molecular chlorine. In addition, one clutch was collected from Pocosin Lakes National Wildlife Refuge PDNWR, a site with no known history of dioxin contamination. Embryos only, with no yolk sacs, and a limited number of companion yolk sacs were analyzed for the seventeen 2,3,7,8substituted polychlorinated dibenzodioxins PCDDs and polychlorinated dibenzofurans PCDFs. The 2,3,7,8tetrachlorodibenzopdioxin 2,3,7,8TCDD isomer was found in all eggs sampled from the Roanoke River 0.32 to 26.6 pgg wet weight but was not detected in the sample from PLNWR 0.15 pgg. The 2,3,7,8tetrachlorinated dibenzofuran 2,3,7,8TCDF isomer was detected in all samples from the Roanoke River 0.92 to 393 pgg as well as the sample from PLNWR 1.6 pgg. We calculated 2,3,7,8TCDD equivalencies TEQs using the international toxicity equivalency factors ITEFs. TEQs were calculated for embryos and yolk sacs; a regression curve was derived to predict yolk sac TEQs in the samples for which only embryos were analyzed. Total TEQs approximated for two whole eggs 22 and 82 pgg were within a range reported in the literature as deleterious to wood ducks 2050 pgg. Liver monooxygenase activities of three dealkylases, benzyloxyresorufinOdealkylase BROD, ethoxyresorufinOdealkylase EROD, and methoxyresorufin0dealkylase MROD, were induced in some clutches for the Roanoke River but not in all clutches. The hatching success of two nests were below 75, the remainder ranged from 75 to 100. Three clutches had 10day survival rates below 75, the others ranged from 75 to 100. No relationship was found between hatching success or survivorship and PCDDPCDF burdens. One embryo had multiple deformities including being a conjoined twin, a bill deformity and exencephaly. Although the deformities observed are consistent with those that can be caused by dioxin, available data do not indicate that dioxins were a causative factor. Data indicate that enticing wood ducks to nest boxes within two kilometers downstream of the mill may not be prudent. The areal extent of habitat adjacent to the mill where concentrations of PCDDs and PCDFs may cause eggs to exceed reproductive effects levels should be determined along with a characterization of the diversity and abundance of waterfowl and other avian species at risk in the immediate vicinity.

The United States Geological Survey (USGS) is working cooperatively with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) to interpret the surficial geology in estuaries along the coast of the northeastern United States. The purpose of our present study is to define the sea floor morphology and sedimentary environments in an area of central Rhode Island Sound using sidescan-sonar imagery, bathymetry data, and seismic records. The mosaic, bathymetry, and their interpretations serve many purposes, including: (1) defining the geological variability of the sea floor, which is one of the primary controls of benthic habitat diversity; (2) improving our understanding of the processes that control the distribution and transport of bottom sediments and the distribution of benthic habitats and associated infaunal community structures; and (3) providing a detailed framework for future research, monitoring, and management activities. The sidescan-sonar mosaics and bathymetry images also serve as base maps for subsequent sedimentological, geochemical, and biological observations, because precise information on environmental setting is important for selection of sampling sites and for accurate interpretations of point measurements.

In response to concerns regarding the conservation and management of wetland biodiversity within the Lahontan Valley, The Nature Conservancy, in cooperation with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, initiated a study in May 1993 to inventory and classify the Lahontan Valley wetland vegetation. The primary objectives of the study were to: 1 identify and describe wetland plant associations that occur in the Lahontan Valley; 2 identify the relationships between wetland plant associations and environmental conditions; and 3 identify the range of wetland plant associations and environmental conditions that occur within wetland management areas, and compare them to those that occur outside the managed areas. Additionally, the results of this study could be used to validate and update the National Wetlands Inventory National List of Plant Species that occur in Wetlands for the Intermountain Region.
