The focus of MMAMA is on providing high-fidelity scientific investigations, scientific input, and science operations constraints in the context of planetary field campaigns. Funding provided in this program element is intended to enable researchers to conduct scientific investigations and integrate their instruments, projects, and/or protocols into field activities designed to help NASA plan for future exploration of the Moon, Mars, and other planetary bodies with both robots and humans. The MMAMA R&A Lead estimates that approximately two-thirds of the effort funded through MMAMA is technology-related. Through this research program element, investigators are selected to carry out specific scientific research analogous to investigations anticipated for missions to asteroids, the Moon, and/or Mars. Areas of specific interest to the Science Mission Directorate (SMD) include, but are not limited to: 1. Understanding and optimizing human and robotic performance to maximize scientific return; 2. Defining science requirements for human missions, including requirements for mobility, navigation, communications, in situ analysis, surface laboratory functionality, crew scheduling, and sample acquisition, handling, documentation, and curation; 3. Developing surface science scenarios for use in architecture planning and science payload manifesting; and 4. Illuminating areas of critical importance for robotic precursor missions, including robotic operations of/with human-oriented systems during periods when humans may not yet be present. 5. Field testing of robotic, teleoperated, and human-operated instruments. Although this is primarily a Planetary Sciences call, proposals in other areas of SMD research such as Heliophysics, Astrophysics, and Earth Science are considered, to the extent that they reflect NASA?s strategic scientific goals at asteroids, the Moon, and/or Mars.

The Digital Flood Insurance Rate Map (DFIRM) Database depicts flood risk information and supporting data used to develop the risk data. The primary risk classifications used are the 1-percent-annual-chance flood event, the 0.2-percent-annual-chance flood event, and areas of minimal flood risk. The DFIRM Database is derived from Flood Insurance Studies (FISs), previously published Flood Insurance Rate Maps (FIRMs), flood hazard analyses performed in support of the FISs and FIRMs, and new mapping data, where available. The FISs and FIRMs are published by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). The file is georeferenced to earth's surface using the UTM projection and coordinate system. The specifications for the horizontal control of DFIRM data files are consistent with those required for mapping at a scale of 1:12,000. This database was developed for the Walker County DFIRM project in 2007 by CF3R/Baker for FEMA Region 6.

This proposal is specifically written to address the need for improved Ka-band T/R modules. The solicitation calls for investigation and development of core technologies that will significantly improve T/R module performance. Improvements needed include reduced power consumption, mass, and size. Hittite Microwave Corporation is a fabless semiconductor company that has been developing microwave monolithic integrated circuits (MMICs) for over 19 years. Hittite proposes three possible areas of focus for the SBIR program, transmitter power amplifiers, receiver integration or complete T/R functionality. By far the largest contributor to the size and weight of a T/R module is the power amplifier. Both GaN and MHEMT are new technologies that have the potential for substantial improvement over incumbent PHEMT technology. MHEMT is most suited to power levels below 4 Watts reverting to the higher power density GaN technology at higher power levels. Both MHEMT and advanced SiGeBiCMOS technologies such as IBM 8HP can be consider for receiver functions. Finally MHEMT strikes a good balance as a single technology platform for a moderate power level (<2 Watt transmit) T/R MMIC/module at 35 GHz. The proposal includes a technology summary as well as basic design considerations and examples of LNAs, PAs and phase shifters.

The TIGER/Line shapefiles and related database files (.dbf) are an extract of selected geographic and cartographic information from the U.S. Census Bureau's Master Address File / Topologically Integrated Geographic Encoding and Referencing (MAF/TIGER) Database (MTDB). The MTDB represents a seamless national file with no overlaps or gaps between parts, however, each TIGER/Line shapefile is designed to stand alone as an independent data set, or they can be combined to cover the entire nation. Census Blocks are statistical areas bounded on all sides by visible features, such as streets, roads, streams, and railroad tracks, and/or by nonvisible boundaries such as city, town, township, and county limits, and short line-of-sight extensions of streets and roads. Census blocks are relatively small in area; for example, a block in a city bounded by streets. However, census blocks in remote areas are often large and irregular and may even be many square miles in area. A common misunderstanding is that data users think census blocks are used geographically to build all other census geographic areas, rather all other census geographic areas are updated and then used as the primary constraints, along with roads and water features, to delineate the tabulation blocks. As a result, all 2010 Census blocks nest within every other 2010 Census geographic area, so that Census Bureau statistical data can be tabulated at the block level and aggregated up to the appropriate geographic areas. Census blocks cover all territory in the United States, Puerto Rico, and the Island Areas (American Samoa, Guam, the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands, and the U.S. Virgin Islands). Blocks are the smallest geographic areas for which the Census Bureau publishes data from the decennial census. A block may consist of one or more faces.

Three endemic species, two arthropods and one isopod, are present in the Kauai caves. These species are critical components of the cave ecosystems and are possibly the last representatives of what was once a more diverse and populous cave community. One of the most biologically diverse of the five known Kauai caves is located directly under the fairway of the Kiahuna Golf Course. While the golf course declined to specify the pesticides they use, over 30 different pesticides are commonly used on golf courses in Hawaii, including insecticides to control turf grass pests. This objective of this study was to determine how these chemicals, particularly organophosphates and carbamates, affect the endemic cave species.

The accuracy assessment field work was performed in July and August, 1996 to verify the accuracy of the vegetation communities spatial data developed by the USGS-NPS Vegetation Mapping Program for Mount Rushmore National Memorial. The data points were randomly distributed stratified according to vegetation association over the project area according to protocols developed by the Program. Points were located by GPS navigation and the community information was collected at the point, without knowledge of the attributes of the vegetation spatial data. The data points were compared to the attributes of the polygon in which they were contained. Attributes of the polygons or accuracy assessment points that did not match were changed during later analysis due to errors in the AA methodology or map attribution errors. A contingency table was completed from the final dataset.

The Census Bureau includes landmarks in the MTDB for locating special features and to help enumerators during field operations. Some of the more common landmark types include area landmarks such as airports, cemeteries, parks, mountain peaks/summits, schools, and churches and other religious institutions. The Census Bureau has added landmark features to MTDB on an as-needed basis and made no attempt to ensure that all instances of a particular feature were included. The presence or absence of a landmark such as a hospital or prison does not mean that the living quarters associated with that landmark were geocoded to that census tabulation block or excluded from the census enumeration.

Payload Systems Inc. (PSI) and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) were selected to jointly develop the Rule-based Analytic Asset Management for Space Exploration System (RAMSES) in this NASA STTR project. This system implements a modular layered architecture that enables automated multi-level asset tracking and management for both space and ground applications based on state-of-the-art RFID technology. The main advantages of this system over current bar-code based asset tracking are: (i) significant time savings through automation, (ii) real-time remote status monitoring through the internet, and (iii) rule-based analytics for proactive asset management. In Phase 2 we propose to redesign the Smart Container by taking advantage of Generation 2 RFID tag technology, lightweight RFID readers and batteries as well as integrating container technologies in a more tight and robust manner. We plan to build a total of three (3) smart containers to demonstrate scalability of the system and interaction among containers. The RAILS software will be upgraded to provide enterprise-level capabilities such as user authentication, inventory and item time history analysis, and an expanded analytic rule set. Testing will be conducted both in the laboratory and in the field to demonstrate seamless three level tracking (container level, room level, outdoors). Finally, we will perform a detailed RAMSES cost/benefit analysis and market survey in preparation for Phase 3.
