<p>JSC provides and applies its preeminent capabilities in science and technology to develop, operate, and integrate human exploration missions.  The Center encourages collaboration with aerospace and non-aerospace industries, government agencies, and academia to solve science and technology challenges, while actively striving to maximize technology transfer into the commercial sector.  </p><p>An active and sustainable science and technology development program is key to ensuring the challenges of human exploration are successfully overcome. The JSC-directed solicitations program enables the Center to invest strategically in high priority areas needed to accomplish future missions as articulated in the NASA Technology Roadmaps and the Space Technology Investment Plan (STIP). It offers the Center the ability to address technology gaps that are beyond the requirements of near-term programs to fund.  It also provides a platform to continue to grow and maintain critical skills and innovations needed to ensure future mission success.  These solicitations encourage use of collaborations to ensure maximum benefit to both the space program and the nation.  As such, external partnerships are highly encouraged not only as a funding leverage but to bring innovative ideas and approaches into human exploration programs.</p><p><em>Selection Process</em></p><p>Typically, JSC solicitations are developed by the JSC CTO and the JSC Technology Working Group (JTWG). The competitive calls are coordinated with JSC Senior Staff and communicated to the JSC workforce via internal email distribution to an R&D community list and through postings on the internal center website and through JSC Today notices.<br /><br />The JTWG solicits, evaluates and prioritizes all JSC solicitation responses in a two-stage process. The JTWG members review project proposals and work together to down-select to the finalists. The Principal Investigators (PIs) make presentations to the JTWG to provide more in-depth project details. This allows the members to select the finalists to support for the year.  Selection criteria and funding vary based on the focus of the solicitation but of primary interest are:</p><ul><li>Human Space Flight Architecture Team (HAT) prioritized technology needs</li><li>Priority JSC technology core competencies</li><li>High potential areas for technology commercialization</li><li>High potential areas for technology partnerships</li></ul><p><em>Project Accomplishments</em></p><p>Through the result of research and development, JSC’s IR&D project PIs are making important progress in the advancement of technology needed to enable NASA’s mission of space exploration. In addition, many of the technologies development to meet the challenges of space exploration have great commercialization potential. Each year, many of JSC’s IR&D projects file New Technology Reports (NTRs) through the JSC Tech Transfer Office. Several of these reports have received New Technology Evaluation Patent ratings to pursue patents, while additional ones have been scheduled for success story articles to be written and published. </p><p>JSC projects active in FY12 and beyond have been included in TechPort. Through the TechPort tool information on the projects is provided and will be updated by PIs as developments and updates become available. This will offer further knowledge and information sharing between NASA developers, researchers, engineers and scientists and other internal and external stakeholders.</p>

This digital elevation model (DEM) is a part of a series of DEMs produced for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Office for Coastal Management's Sea Level Rise and Coastal Flooding Impacts Viewer (www.coast.noaa.gov/slr/viewer). The DEMs created for this project were developed using the NOAA National Weather Service's Weather Forecast Office (WFO) boundaries. Because the WFO boundaries can cover large areas, the WFO DEM was divided into smaller DEMs to ensure more manageable file sizes. The Mobile/Tallahassee (AL/FL) WFO DEM was split into three smaller DEMS. They are divided as follows: 1. Mobile/Tallahassee (AL/FL) WFO - Mobile County in Alabama and Escambia, Santa Rosa, and Okaloosa (portion) Counties in Florida 2. Mobile/Tallahassee (AL/FL) WFO - Okaloosa (portion), Walton, Bay, Gulf, Franklin (portion), and Wakulla (portion) Counties 3. Mobile/Tallahassee (AL/FL) WFO - Wakulla (portion), Franklin (portion), Jefferson, Taylor, Dixie, and Levy Counties. This metadata record describes the DEM for the Mobile/Tallahassee (AL/FL) WFO - Mobile County in Alabama and Escambia, Santa Rosa, and Okaloosa (portion) Counties in Florida. The DEM includes the best available lidar data known to exist at the time of DEM creation for the coastal areas of Mobile County in Alabama and Escambia, Santa Rosa, and Okaloosa (portion) counties in Florida, that met project specification. This DEM is derived from the USGS National Elevation Dataset (NED), US Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) LiDAR data, as well as LiDAR collected for the Northwest Florida Water Management District (NWFWMD) and the Florida Department of Emergency Management (FDEM). NED and USACE data were used only in Mobile County, AL. NWFWMD or FDEM data were used in all other areas. Hydrographic breaklines used in the creation of the DEM were obtained from FDEM and Southwest Florida Water Management District (SWFWMD). This DEM is hydro flattened such that water elevations are less than or equal to 0 meters. This DEM is referenced vertically to the North American Vertical Datum of 1988 (NAVD88) with vertical units of meters and horizontally to the North American Datum of 1983 (NAD83). The resolution of the DEM is approximately 5 meters. This DEM does not include licensed data (Baldwin County, Alabama) that is unavailable for distribution to the general public. As such, the extent of this DEM is different than that of the DEM used by the NOAA Office for Coastal Management in creating the inundation data seen in the Sea Level Rise and Coastal Impacts Viewer (www.coast.noaa.gov/slr/viewer).

An automated in-space recycling system for 3D printer feedstock will provide game-changing resupply benefits including but not limited to launch mass reduction, mission reliability increases, and decreased reliance on resupply from Earth. To bring these benefits to ISS in the near term, Made In Space proposes the further development of their unique recycling system, called R3DO, for transforming ABS plastic parts on ISS into 3D printer filament feedstock. R3DO leverages Made In Space's knowledge of the extrusion process in microgravity, which enables 3D printing in space. R3DO's patent-pending technologies designed to meet NASA ISS requirements, and include multiple unique innovations such as filament use in microgravity, the low-power heating system, microgravity stabilization, material control, breaker plate migration, material-filter interactions, cooling characteristics, and safety mechanisms. Made In Space has developed and tested four prototype iterations of R3DO in the lab, to verify that the recycler is capable of recycling 3D printed material into feedstock and that that feedstock can be used with Made In Space printers. Further, Made In Space has flown one of these prototypes on several microgravity flights to verify that it is capable of recycling ABS plastic and extruding feedstock in microgravity. Feedstock extruded in microgravity was then used to successfully print parts using Made In Space 3D printers. For Phase 1 development, Made In Space will conduct a feasibility study and create a bench-top proof of concept of the full ISS system, based on the aforementioned prototypes, with a planned Technology Readiness Level ("TRL") of 5. Phase 2 will produce an Engineering Test Unit and accumulate data at TRL 6, and Phase 3 will feature the manufacturing of a Flight Unit, integration with the ISS and commercial applications, demonstrating TRL 9.

This proposal describes the development of passive wireless surface acoustic wave (SAW) based liquid level sensors for NASA application to cryogenic liquid level sensing. Orthogonal Frequency Coded (OFC) SAW devices have been demonstrated as passive wireless temperature sensors in NASA Contract NNK04OA28C, and are being further developed under NNK05OB31C. The proposed liquid level sensors will use damping of the acoustic wave caused by mass loading of the liquid to produce fast, reversible liquid level sensors. The proposed research will apply the results of ongoing work on OFC sensors and will evaluate their operation as liquid level sensors in selected liquids of interest at cryogenic temperatures. Issues to be investigated include the stability of various SAW substrates when exposed to various (extreme and gradual) temperature changes, the effects on device integrity and performance of thermal cycling to cryogenic temperatures, and the effects of device exposure to various liquids and the reversibility thereof. The result of the proposed research will be an understanding of potential failure mechanisms in SAW sensors used at cryogenic temperatures, knowledge of the required operating parameters to ensure device reliability under likely operating conditions, and demonstration of the use of OFC SAW sensors for liquid level detection.

The lower Gunnison River and the Colorado River are designated critical habitat for two endangered fish species: the Colorado pikeminnow Ptychocheilus lucius and the razorback sucker Xyrauchen texanus. Approximately 95 river miles of these river segments are state listed as impaired because selenium concentrations exceed the chronic standard for the protection of aquatic life. There is continual need to monitor fish tissue selenium concentrations to assess remediation effectiveness in conjunction with remediation efforts undertaken by the local selenium task force. Muscle plug biopsies provide a nonlethal sampling method to determine selenium residues in endangered fish. There is a need for accurate and validated conversion factors to predict selenium in whole body fish, as well as ovarian with eggs concentrations from measured muscle plug residues for comparison to established toxicity thresholds. Selenium concentrations in ovaries and eggs provide the most reliable endpoint to assess risk of reproductive impairment from selenium toxicity. We have developed tissue selenium prediction equations using two fish species; the green sunfish Lepomis cyanellus and the white sucker Catastomus commersoni. These prediction equations were tested on other fish species to measure performance. Whole body selenium concentrations predicted from muscle plug concentrations were usually within 30 of the actual measured values. Ovaryegg selenium concentrations predicted from muscle plug concentrations were usually underestimated; especially for black bullhead Ictalurus melas, channel catfish Ictalurus punctatus, brown trout Salmo trutta, and roundtail chub Gila robusta. Fish varied by species when partitioning different selenium loads into their ovaryegg tissues. Black bullheads, channel catfish, and brown trout partition more selenium into ovarieseggs compared to other species. Green sunfish and white suckers exhibited seasonal differences in ovaryegg selenium concentrations, with prespawning females carrying significantly higher selenium loads than postbreeding females. Selenium concentrations in endangered Colorado River fish were at levels known to impair reproduction in other fish species.

This fish and benthic composition database is the result of a multifaceted effort described below. The intent of this work is five fold: 1) To spatially characterize and monitor the distribution, abundance, and size of both reef fishes and macro-invertebrates (conch, lobster, Diadema); 2) To relate this information to in-situ data collected on associated benthic composition parameters; 3) To use this information to establish the knowledge base necessary for enacting management decisions in a spatial setting; 4) To establish the efficacy of those management decisions; and 5) To work with the National Coral Reef Monitoring Program to develop data collection standards and easily implemented methodologies for transference to other agencies and to work toward standardizing data collection throughout the US states and territories. Toward this end, the Center for Coastal Monitoring and Assessment's Biogeography Branch (BB) has been conducting research in Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands since 2000 and 2001, respectively. It is critical, with recent changes in management at both locations (e.g. implementation of MPAs) as well as proposed changes (e.g. zoning to manage multiple human uses) that action is taken now to accurately describe and characterize the fish/macro-invertebrate populations in these areas. It is also important that BB work closely with the individuals responsible for recommending and implementing these management strategies. Recognizing this, BB has been collaborating with partners at the University of Puerto Rico, National Park Service, US Geological Survey and the Virgin Islands Department of Planning and Natural Resources. To quantify patterns of spatial distribution and make meaningful interpretations, we must first have knowledge of the underlying variables determining species distribution. The basis for this work therefore, is the nearshore benthic habitats maps (less than 100 ft depth) created by NOAA's Biogeography Program in 2001 and NOS' bathymetry models. Using ArcView GIS software, the digitized habitat maps are stratified to select sampling stations. Sites are randomly selected within these strata to ensure coverage of the entire study region and not just a particular reef or seagrass area. At each site, fish, macro-invertebrates, and benthic composition information is then quantified following standardized protocols. By relating the data collected in the field back to the habitat maps and bathymetric models, BB is able to model and map species level and community level information. These protocols are standardized throughout the US Caribbean to enable quantification and comparison of reef fish abundance and distribution trends between locations. Armed with the knowledge of where "hot spots" of species richness and diversity are likely to occur in the seascape, the BB is in a unique position to answer questions about the efficacy of marine zoning strategies (e.g. placement of no fishing, anchoring, or snorkeling locations), and what locations are most suitable for establishing MPAs. Knowledge of the current status of fish/macro-invertebrate communities coupled with longer term monitoring will enable evaluation of management efficacy, thus it is essential to future management actions.

The MTDB represents a seamless national file with no overlaps or gaps between parts, however, each TIGER/Line shapefile is designed to stand alone as an independent data set, or they can be combined to cover the entire nation. Combined New England City and Town Areas (CNECTA) are defined by the Office of Management and Budget (OMB) and consist of two or more adjacent New England City and Town Areas (NECTA) that have significant employment interchanges. The NECTAs that combine to create a CNECTA retain separate identities within the larger combined statistical area. Because CNECTAs represent groupings of NECTAs, they should not be ranked or compared with individual NECTAs. The CNECTA boundaries are those defined by OMB based on the 2010 Census and published in 2013.

SUMMARY DDOD use case to request access historical label revisions of FDA-approved drugs. WHAT IS A USE CASE? A “Use Case” is a request that was made by the user community because there were no available datasets that met their particular needs. If this use case is similar to your needs, we ask that you add your own requirements to the specifications section. The concept of a use case falls within the Demand-Driven Open Data (DDOD) program and gives you a formalized way to identify what data you need. It’s for anyone in industry, research, media, nonprofits or other government agencies. Each request becomes a DDOD use case, so that it can be prioritized and worked on. Use Cases also provide a wealth of insights about existing alternative datasets and tips for interpreting and manipulating data for specific purposes. PURPOSE Drug manufacturers and distributions submit documentation about their products to FDA in Structured Product Labeling (SPL) that is available via openFDA. However, the approved labeling is a "living document" that is updated over time to reflect increased knowledge about the safety and effectiveness of the drug. The real-time nature of the labeling information makes it difficult to track the historical changes to a product's label and indications. VALUE The historical context of a product's label and indications is important in understanding how and why product labeling changes and in evaluating pharmaceutical market access. USE CASE SPECIFICATIONS & SOLUTION Information about this use cases is maintained in a wiki: http://hhs.ddod.us/wiki/Use_Case_25:_History_for_structured_product_labels It serves as a knowledge base. USE CASE DISCUSSION FORUM All communications between Data Users, DDOD Administrators and Data Owners are logged as discussions within GitHub issues: https://github.com/demand-driven-open-data/ddod-intake/issues/25 It aims to provide complete transparency into the process and ensure the same message gets to all participants. CASE STATUS Closed via DailyMed, which has XML files of historical SPLs

The U.S. coast from southern California to Washington state features vast areas of submerged mountain ranges, canyons, plateaus, volcanoes, basins, rocky outcrops, and pinnacles, many of which have never been surveyed or explored adequately. These unique conditions contribute to one of the greatest diversities of marine life in the world, including whales, sea otters, seabirds and hundreds of fish species. Aboard the McArthur, the Sanctuary Quest Expedition team conducted research, exploration, and monitoring within and adjacent to the national marine sanctuaries in this region. Over the long term, the expedition should help to provide a framework for understanding more about the efficacy and role of the sanctuary system in protecting and conserving marine resources, and to provide the impetus for continued regional research.
