This data set contains annual quantities and value for all seafood products that are landed and sold by established seafood dealers and brokers in the Southeast Region (North Carolina through Texas). These types of data, referred to as the general canvass landings statistics, have been collected by the NOAA Fisheries Service, National Marine Fisheries Service and its predecessor agency, the Bureau of Commercial Fisheries. The data are available on computer since the early 1960's. The quantities and values that are reported in this data set include the annual landings that were initiated in 1962. Beginning in 1976, the data were collected monthly. See the sections on Links for the reference to the monthly general canvass landings. The annual general canvass landings include quantities and value for all living marine species and are identified by species (usually the local or common name). These data were collected by field agents employed by the National Marine Fisheries Service or the Bureau of Commercial Fisheries and assigned to local fishing ports. The agents contacted the majority of the seafood dealers or brokers in their assigned areas and recorded the quantities and value for each species or species category from the sales receipts maintained by the seafood dealers. In addition, information on the gear and area of capture is available for most of the landings statistics in the data set. Based on their knowledge of the fishing activity in the area, the agents would estimate the type of fishing gear and area where the fishing was likely to have occurred. More detailed information on the caveats associated with these data is provided in the Characteristics, Caveats and Issues section. However, because these data are summaries, they do not contain information on the quantities of fishing effort or identifications of the fishermen or vessels that caught the fish or shellfish.

The Shuttle Solar Backscatter Ultraviolet (SSBUV) level-2 irradiance data are available for eight space shuttle missions flown between 1989 and 1996. SSBUV, a successor to the SBUV flown on the Nimbus-7 satellite, is nearly identical to the SBUV/2 instruments flown on the NOAA polar orbiting satellites. Data are available in an ASCII text format. UV irradiance data are available for the following days from the eight missions: Flight #1: 1989 October 19, 20, 21 Flight #2: 1990 October 7, 8, 9 Flight #3: 1991 August 3, 4, 5, 6 Flight #4: 1992 March 29, 30 Flight #5: 1993 April 9, 11, 13, 15, 16 Flight #6: 1994 March 14, 15, 17 Flight #7: 1994 November 5, 7, 10, 13 Flight #8: 1996 January 12, 16, 18 The Shuttle SBUV (SSBUV) instrument measured solar spectral UV irradiance during the maximum and declining phase of solar cycle 22. The SSBUV data accurately represent the absolute solar UV irradiance between 200–405 nm, and also show the long-term variations during eight flights between October 1989 and January 1996. These data have been used to correct long-term sensitivity changes in the NOAA-11 SBUV/2 data, which provide a near-daily record of solar UV variations over the 170–400 nm region between December 1988 and October 1994. These data demonstrate the evolution of short-term solar UV activity during solar cycle 22.

The USGS Central Region Energy Team assesses oil and gas resources of the United States. The onshore and State water areas of the United States comprise 71 provinces. Within these provinces, Total Petroleum Systems are defined and Assessment Units are defined and assessed. Each of these provinces is defined geologically, and most province boundaries are defined by major geologic changes. The Sacramento Basin Province is located in the Northern Central Valley, California, encompassing all or parts of Shasta, Tehana, Glenn, Butte, Colusa, Lake, Yuba, Sutter, Placer, Yolo, Napa, Sacramento, Amador, San Joaquin, Solano, Contra Costa, Calaveras, Alameda, and Stanislaus counties in California. The main population centers within the study area are Sacramento, Stockton, Modesto, Elk Grove, Yuba City, Chico, and Red Bluff, California. The main highways, I-5 and I-80, generally traverse the area from north to south and east to west respectively. The Sacramento River and its tributaries drain the area. For this study the Sacramento Basin Province includes the Northern Central Valley. The province boundary was drawn to include the geologic structures generally considered to be in or bounding the Sacramento Basin.

Sandy ocean beaches are a popular recreational destination, often surrounded by communities containing valuable real estate. Development is on the rise despite the fact that coastal infrastructure is subjected to flooding and erosion. As a result, there is an increased demand for accurate information regarding past and present shoreline changes. To meet these national needs, the Coastal and Marine Geology Program of the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) is compiling existing reliable historical shoreline data along open-ocean sandy shores of the conterminous United States and parts of Alaska and Hawaii under the National Assessment of Shoreline Change project. Shoreline vectors derived from historic and modern sources represent the low water mark (beach toe). There is no widely accepted standard for analyzing shoreline change. Existing shoreline data measurements and rate calculation methods vary from study to study and prevent combining results into state-wide or regional assessments. The impetus behind the National Assessment project was to develop a standardized method of measuring changes in shoreline position that is consistent from coast to coast. The goal was to facilitate the process of periodically and systematically updating the results in an internally consistent manner.

NASA has been tasked with supporting the development of key technologies to facilitate the evolution of the National Airspace System to NextGen, the Next Generation Air Transportation System. One of these key technologies is the detection of wake vortices generated by other aircraft. This is of particular concern during take-off and landing, both because the danger is particularly acute, and because of the large economic impact of having to widely space the aircraft. About $5 billion of revenue is lost each year due to delays and lower throughput in our nation's airports. Ground-based lidars have the ability to detect and track wake vortices, but mounting similar systems on aircraft would be prohibitively expensive. We propose to develop an intrinsically low-cost lidar that would be suitable for deployment on commercial airliners. Costs are kept low through an extremely simple design: a passively Q-switched single-frequency laser that uses a fiber delay-line in place of a local oscillator. The Phase I effort will also include a modeling task to explore detecting wake vortices using an on-axis lidar instead of imaging from the side. Since the primary flow components will be perpendicular to the lidar beam, we anticipate that looking for an increase in the width of the coherent return may prove to be the best approach.

The last of Hanford's nine plutonium production reactors to be built was the N Reactor. This reactor was called a dual purpose reactor in that it not only produced plutonium for America's defense program, but it also generated electricity. It was the only reactor of its kind in the country. N Reactor was so revolutionary that then-President John Kennedy came to Hanford in 1963 to commemorate the start of plutonium production operations as well as break ground for the power-generating component of the facility.President Kennedy's visit in 1963 took place just four months before he was assassinated in Dallas. His visit to Hanford was one of the few times when the Site's security restrictions were eased allowing a crowd of more than 30,000 people to visit the reactor and listen to the President's speech. The technology associated with the N Reactor was far superior to that which was used to build the first eight nuclear reactors at Hanford.N Reactor had a state-of-the-art cooling system, which required significantly less Columbia River water to be used to cool it during operations. If there was ever a loss of cooling water, N was built with an automatic safety system in place that would shut down the reactor on its own without any operator action required. The N Reactor operated from 1963 until 1987 when it was shut down for routine maintenance, refueling, and safety upgrades. However, it was never re-started.Instead, DOE placed the N Reactor in standby status, which led to its eventual shutdown without ever going operational again. With more than 24 years of service, the N Reactor was the longest running reactor at Hanford. When N was shut down, 1 million gallons of contaminated water was left in its storage basin along with approximately one-third of Hanford's supply of irradiated fuel rods.Workers successfully removed the liquid and sent it to Hanford facilities where the liquid was treated and safely disposed of.The remaining irradiated fuel segments were placed in the K-Basins and have since been moved to the Canister Storage Building where they will stay until such time as a national repository can be built to accept them. N Reactor was placed in interim safe storage, a process known as "cocooning," in June 2012. As part of cocooning, workers removed all of the ancillary buildings and sealed up the reactor. The enclosure and roof for N Reactor, the largest at Hanford to date, enclosed the reactor building (85,450 square feet) and the Heat Exchange Facility, which held the steam generators used to produce electricity.
