A Group for High Resolution Sea Surface Temperature (GHRSST) Level 4 sea surface temperature analysis produced daily on an operational basis at the Australian Bureau of Meteorology using optimal interpolation (OI) on a global 0.25 degree grid. This BLUELink Global Australian Multi-Sensor SST Analysis (GAMSSA) v1.0 system blends satellite SST observations from the Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR), the Advanced Along Track Scanning Radiometer (AATSR), and, the Advanced Microwave Scanning Radiometer-EOS (AMSRE), and in situ data from ships, and drifting and moored buoy from the Global Telecommunications System (GTS). In order to produce a foundation SST estimate, the AATSR skin SST data stream is converted to foundation SST using the Donlon et al. (2002) skin to foundation temperature conversion algorithms. These empirically-derived algorithms apply a small correction for the cool-skin effect depending on surface wind speed, and filter out SST values suspected to be affected by diurnal warming by excluding cases which have experienced recent surface wind speeds of below 6 ms-1 during the day and less than 2 ms-1 during the night.

NODC accession 0089602 includes physical and underway data collected aboard the KILO MOANA during cruise KM0923 in the North Pacific Ocean from 2009-10-01 to 2009-10-17. These data include CURRENT SPEED - EAST/WEST COMPONENT (U) and CURRENT SPEED - NORTH/SOUTH COMPONENT (V). The instruments used to collect these data include ADCP and GPS. These data were collected by Craig Moyer of WESTERN WASHINGTON UNIVERSITY and UNIVERSITY OF HAWAII; MARINE LABORATORY as part of Iron-Oxidizing Microbial Observatory (FeMO-4) - Loihi Seamount. The Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory (LDEO) submitted these data to NODC as part of the NSF sponsored Rolling Deck to Repository (R2R) program. The ADCP data represent the raw and automated processed data set. Post processed quality assessed data are not available in this accession.

Liquid Robotics Wave Glider, Honey Badger (G3), 2015, Weather. The MAGI mission is to use the Wave Glider to sample the late summer chlorophyll bloom that develops near 30°N, with the goal of using the camera and LISST-Holo to try to identify species in the blooms and then follow the development of phytoplankton aggregates. These aggregates have recently been shown to be a significant part of the total amount of carbon that sinks to the deep sea. Karl et al (2012) found that in each of the past 13 years, there was a flux of material to 4,000 m (the summer export pulse) that represented ~20% of the total annual flux. Work based on satellite ocean color data over the past decade has revealed the existence of large phytoplankton blooms in the Pacific Ocean that cover thousands of km2, persist for weeks or longer, and are often dominated by nitrogen-fixing diatom symbioses (Wilson et al. 2008). We hope to be able to examine whether this aggregation is occurring in the vast oceanic regions north and east of Hawai'i and provide a basin-scale context for the ALOHA observations. These events have proven difficult to study outside of the time series station ALOHA at Hawai'i.

Chemical data were collected using moored current meter, bottle casts, and other instruments in the Gulf of Mexico from June 18, 1978 to June 24, 1981. Data were submitted by Texas A&M University as part of the Brine Disposal project. Data has been been processed by NODC to the NODC standard F004- Current Meter Data, and F144 Marine Toxic Substances formats. Full format descriptions are available from NODC homepage at http://www.noaa.nodc.gov The F004 format is used for data from measurements and analyses of physical and chemical characteristics of the water column. Among chemical parameters that may be recorded are salinity, PH, and concentration of oxygen, ammonia, nitrate, phosphate, chlorophyll, and suspended solids. Physical parameters that may be recorded include temperature, density (sigma-t), transmissivity, and current velocity (east-west and north-south components). Cruise and station information, including environmental conditions of the study site at the time of observations, is also included. The F144 format contains data on ambient concentrations of toxic substances and other pollutants in the marine environment. The data derive from laboratory analyses of samples of water, sediment, or marine organisms. Samples may have been collected near marine discharge sites or during ocean monitoring surveys of large areas. Field observations of tar deposits on beaches may also be reported. Survey information includes platform type, start and end dates, and investigator and institution. If data are collected near a discharge site, discharge location, depth, distance to shore, average volume, and other characteristics are reported. Position, date, time and environmental conditions are reported for each sample station. Environmental data may include meteorological and sea surface conditions, tide stage and height, depth of the thermocline or mixed layer surface temperature and salinity, and wave height and periods. Sample characteristics, collection methods, and laboratory techniques are reported for each sample collected and analyzed. The data record comprises concentration values (or a code to indicate trace amounts) for each chemical substance analyzed. Chemical substances are identified by codes based on the registry numbers assigned by the Chemical Abstracts Service (CAS) of the American Chemical Society. Marine organisms from which samples have been taken are identified using the 12-digit NODC Taxonomic Code. A text record is available for optional comments.

This dataset contains an ESRI Grid representing the rugosity of the bathymetry of the Mid Shelf Reef south of St. Thomas, US Virgin Islands, based on a 10m bathymetric grid. Rugosity is defined as the ratio of surface area to planar area and is used as a measure of benthic terrain complexity or "roughness". Rugosity values near 1 represent flat, smooth terrain, while higher values reflect increasing rugosity or terrain roughness. For rugosity grid interpretation, is is recommended that the grid be reclassified according to standard deviation divisions.NOAA's NOS/NCCOS/CCMA Biogeography Team, in collaboration with NOAA vessel Nancy Foster and territory, federal, and private sector partners, acquired multibeam bathymetry data in the US Virgin Islands from 2/1/05 to 2/12/05. Data was acquired with a pole-mounted Reson 8101 ER multibeam echosounder (240 kHz) and processed by a NOAA contractor using CARIS HIPS v5.4 software. Data has all correctors applied (attitude, sound velocity) and has been reduced to mean lower low water (MLLW) using final approved tides and zoning from NOAA COOPS. Data is in UTM zone 20 north, datum NAD83. The processed CARIS data was used to generate a CARIS BASE surface based on swath angle. An ASCII XYZ file was exported from the BASE surface and opened in ESRI ArcMap 9 as an XY event. Then the ArcToolbox conversion tool 'Feature to Raster' was used to generate an ESRI Grid of bathymetry. The Benthic Terrain Modeller (BTM) tool, a collection of ArcGIS terrain visualization tools developed by the Oregon State University (OSU) Department of Geosciences and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Coastal Services Center, was used to calculate the rugosity of that bathymetric grid. More information on the specific algorithms used can be found in the BTM's documentation.The project was conducted to meet IHO Order 1 and 2 accuracy standards, dependant on the project area and depth. All users should individually evaluate the suitability of this data according to their own needs and standards.
