The Integrated Science Data Management (ISDM) office processes oceanographic profiles reported for the world oceans in near real-time from the Global Telecommunications System (GTS) for the Global Temperature and Salinity Profile Program (GTSPP). These data also support the activities of the Ship of Opportunity Programme Implementation Panel (SOOPIP) and the WOCE Upper Ocean Thermal Program WOCE UOT). The ISDM sends a copy of these data to the US NODC three times each week.
Real-Time XBT data assembled by US NOAA Atlantic Oceanographic Meteorological Laboratory (AOML) for the Global Temperature-Salinity Profile Program (GTSPP) and submitted 09/06/2010 - 09/12/2010 (NODC Accession 0067341)

These data represent data collected from the Shipboard Environmental (data) Acquisition System (SEAS), a program developed by National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) to provide accurate meteorological and oceanographic data in real time from ships at sea through the use of satellite data transmission techniques. The system transmits data through either the Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite (GOES) or the International Maritime Satellite Organization (INMARSAT C) satellites to NOAA for use in weather, climatological and ocean models. NOAA is actively participating in an international effort to increase the number of subsurface temperature observations in support of global oceanographic and climate studies. NOAA's Expendable Bathythermograph (XBT) program, SEAS, currently supports about 80 Voluntary Observing Ships (VOS). SEAS XBT data are archived by the National Oceanographic Data Center (NODC) on a weekly basis.

These data were collected under a cooperative mapping program between the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Office for Coastal Management (NOAA\OCM), and the Apalachicola National Estuarine Research Reserve (NERR). The primary objectives of this program were to collect marine geophysical data to develop a suite of seafloor maps to better define the extent of oyster habitats, the overall seafloor geology of the bay and provide updated information for management of this resource. In addition to their value for management of the bay's oyster resources, the maps also provide a geologic framework for scientific research and the public. High-resolution bathymetry, backscatter intensity, and seismic profile data were collected over 230 square kilometers of the floor of the bay. The study focused on the Apalachicola Bay and Western St. George Sound portions of the estuary mostly in depths > 2.0 meters.

This data is from three cruises on the R/V Cape Hatteras taken in Aug and October 2001, and March 2002 from Boothbay Harbor Maine to the Sargasso Sea. The purpose of these cruises was to study single-cell bacterial activity using the CTC assay (Sieracki et al. 1999) in context with other microplankton parameters. Onboard flow cytometry (B-D FACScan instrument) was used to count pico- and nanoplankton, including total bacteria and CTC-active bacteria. Pico- and nanophytoplankton were measured live (no sample preservation). CTD data is reported here along with the pico- and nanoplankton abundances. The CTD data is from the bottle trip depths only. The SeaBird CTD was provided by the ship. At stations a drifting drogue, marking the water at 15m, was deployed and the CTD vertical profiles were taken at the drogue.

Thermographs are weekly circular charts recording temperature at a given station. Includes hygrothermographs, long rectangular charts which which also capture humidity on the same chart. The National Climatic Data Center has hundreds of thousands more thermograph charts in physical media, which if scanned would be added to this library. The period of records spans the entire 20th century.
