These data are part of a collection of ocean observation data from Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution ships OCEANUS (call sign WXAQ; built 1975.00; IMO 7603617), KNORR (call sign KCEJ; built 1970.00; IMO 7738618), and the ATLANTIS (call sign KAQP; built 1997.03; IMO 9105798). The data sets are the downloads of the shipboard computers after an individual cruise. As such, they contain basic raw and processed physical and meteorological data from the cruise. A data set may include XBT, CTD, and XCTD profiles, underway thermosalinograph and atmospheric measurements, gravity and magnetic field measurements, current measurements from ADCP, and still photographs from the Alvin submersible (Atlantis cruises only). Other data types (ROV, nutrients measured from bottle samples, etc.) and photographs documenting the cruise may be included.

Multibeam backscatter imagery extracted from gridded bathymetry of the lagoon, shelf, and slope environments of Palmyra Atoll, Pacific Island Areas, Central Pacific. These data provide coverage between 20 and 5000 meters. The backscatter dataset includes data collected using Simrad EM300 and Reson 8101 multibeam sonars. The sonars frequencies are 30 kHz and 240 kHz respectively and the backscatter data from each sonar are processed and gridded separately. These metadata are for the 1 m grid cell size Reson 8101 multibeam backscatter data only.

Capelin are important forage fish in Alaska for marine mammals, birds, and predatory fish. Capelin prefer cold water and are very sensitive to changing environmental conditions. Population studies in the Arctic suggest that capelin migrate with temperature changes. During warm historical periods, capelin migrated through the Arctic Ocean to move between Pacific and Atlantic Oceans. Strong preference for specific temperature regimes may cause some populations to become trapped in local refugia such as glacier fiords, if sea temperatures fluctuate. Preliminary data in our laboratory suggests that the Bering Sea and Gulf of Alaska capelin populations are genetically isolated. Based on their histories, we predict that capelin populations have strongly diverged in local refugia. Understanding the genetic structure of Alaska capelin populations will allow us to estimate whether these populations are isolated and how they might respond to warming environmental conditions. Results will provide crucial information to Gulf of Alaska and Bering Sea ecosystem models.

CRED shallow Conductivity-Temperature-Depth (CTD) casts are vertical profiles (max 30 meter depth, downcast only) of temperature, conductivity and pressure. Data are collected at select nearshore locations, both around islands or banks and within lagoons. Data processing was performed using Seabird Instrument's SeaSoft SBE Data Processing Software (http://www.seabird.com/software/SBEDataProcforWindows.htm). Data format is discreet, tabular (formatted, space delimited ASCII) files for each profile, with a full header as provided by SeaSoft. Raw file extension is HEX, processed file extension is CNV. The header contains latitude, longitude and other location information, as well as all data processing steps and settings. All dates and times are UTC. All positions are WGS84 decimal degrees. This georeferenced image represents 1 meter resolution multibeam bathymetry of the Mid Shelf Reef south of St. Thomas, US Virgin Islands. NOAA's NOS/NCCOS/CCMA Biogeography Team, in collaboration with NOAA vessel Nancy Foster and territory, federal, and private sector partners, acquired multibeam bathymetry data in the US Virgin Islands from 2/1/05 to 2/12/05. Data was acquired with a pole-mounted Reson 8101 ER multibeam echosounder (240 kHz) and processed by a NOAA contractor using CARIS HIPS v5.4 software. Data has all correctors applied (attitude, sound velocity) and has been reduced to mean lower low water (MLLW) using final approved tides from NOAA COOPS. Data is in UTM zone 20 north, datum NAD83. The processed CARIS data was used to generate a CARIS BASE surface -akin to a DTM- based on swath angle. Within CARIS, an imagery file with associated georeferencing was then exported from the BASE surface. The project was conducted to meet IHO Order 1 and 2 accuracy standards, dependant on the project area and depth. All users should individually evaluate the suitability of this data according to their own needs and standards.

Allozyme variation was used to examine population genetic structure of adult chinook salmon, Oncorhynchus tshawytscha, collected between 1988 and 1993 from 22 spawning locations in Southeast Alaska and northern British Columbia. Thirty-five loci and two pairs of isoloci were variable, and of these, 25 loci and one pair of isoloci expressed the most abundant allele with a frequency of less than or equal to 0.95 in at least one collection. Aneighbor-joining (NJ) tree of genetic distances defined five regional groups: (1) King Salmon River (the only island collection), which has large allelic frequency differences from other populations in this study; (2) heterogeneous coastal populations from southern southeast Alaska; (3) transmountain collections from the Taku and Stikine Rivers on the eastern side of the coastal mountain range; (4) Chilkat River in northern Southeast Alaska; and (5) northern coastal Southeast Alaska, which consists of the Situk River and the Klukshu River, a tributary of the Alsek River. A second NJ tree that included collections from the Yukon River and British Columbia did not reveal any strong genetic similarity between Southeast Alaska and the Yukon River. The data suggest that Southeast Alaska may have been colonized from both northern and southern refugia following the last glaciation b?? a period of sufficient time to allow for isolation by distance to occur.

Remote Sensing Inc. distributes science quality wind velocity data from the SeaWinds instrument onboard NASA's QuikSCAT satellite. SeaWinds is a microwave scatterometer designed to measure surface winds over the global ocean. Wind velocity fields are provided in zonal, meridional, and modulus sets. The reference height for all wind velocities is 10 meters.

Genetic stock identification techniques were used to identify the origin and provide stock-specific migration and distribution patterns of juvenile chum (Oncorhynchus keta) salmon caught during annual fall surveys (2002) along the eastern Bering Sea (Fig. 1). Preliminary results indicate that: 1) Yukon River Fall chum salmon are widely distributed from offshore of the Yukon River, eastward to 62B0N, 172B0W, and as far south as Nunivak Island (60B0N), suggesting a southwesterly migration pathway along the Bering Sea shelf; 2) juvenile chum salmon from the Kuskokwim River are narrowly distributed south of Nunivak Island from the mouth of the Kuskokwim River, south to 58B0N, and as far west as 168B0W, suggesting a westerly migration pathway along the Bering Sea shelf; and 3) northern Russia juvenile chum salmon stocks (mainly stocks from rivers draining into the Gulf of Anadyr) are distributed as far east as 62B0N, 171B0W (Fig. 2). These results are unique in that they represent the first attempt to identify early marine distribution and migration of juvenile chum salmon stocks on the eastern Bering Sea shelf.
