In April 1986 a major oil spill from a ruptured storage tank at a local refinery just east of the Caribbean entrance to the Panama Canal polluted an area of coral reefs, mangrove forests, and grassbeds along the Caribbean coast of the Republic of Panama. The area affected included a biological reserve of the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute (STRI) where baseline biological and environmental data had beencollected for the previous 15 years. Shortly after the spill, a grant to study the effects of the spill was received from the Minerals Management Service of the United States Department of the Interior. Data was then collected from May of 1986 to October of 1991 by the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute under Minerals Management Service contracts 14-12-0001-30355 and 14-12-0001-30393. These data are filed under NODC Accession #9400033. Results of the study were published as a technical report of the MMS (Keller and Jackson, 1993.) The project was divided into 8 subprojects to study the chemistry of the oil and 7 different environments affected by the spill, which included seagrass, coral, and mangrove communities. The study continued in part for an additional year under another grant, but that data is not included here, nor is data collected before the spill or data collected by the STRI ESP program.

Data were collected by the United States Coast Guard from 09 July 1968 to 01 August 1968. The platform was equipped and staffed to observe weather and sea conditions. Data were processed by NODC to the NODC standard Universal Bathythermograph Output (UBT) format. Full format description is available from NODC at www.nodc.noaa.gov/General/NODC-Archive/bt.html. The UBT file format is used for temperature-depth profile data obtained using the mechanical bathythermograph (MBT) instrument. The maximum depth of MBT observations is approximately 285 m. Therefore, MBT data are useful only in studying the thermal structure of the upper layers of the ocean. Cruise information, date, position, and time are reported for each observation. The data record comprises pairs of temperature-depth values. Temperature data in this file are recorded at uniform 5 m depth intervals.

Data from Coral Reef Ecosystem Division (CRED), NOAA Pacific Islands Fisheries Science Center (PIFSC) Subsurface Temperature Recorders (STR) provide a time series of water temperature at coral reef sites. Data is typically collected at 1800 second intervals for a duration of 2 years using a SBE39 Temperature Recorder (Sea-Bird Electronics, Inc., www.seabird.com). When a STR is recovered, a new one is typically deployed in the same place. Time series data combining multiple deployments from a given site may also be available. Current meter components data were collected from FIXED PLATFORMS in the NE Pacific (limit-180) from 27 May 1992 to 15 August 1993. Data were collected by the Pacific Marine Environmental Laboratory (PMEL) in support of the VENTS program. Data were processed by NODC to the NODC standard F015 Current Meter Components format. Full format description is available from NODC at www.nodc.noaa.gov/General/NODC-Archive/f015.html. The F015 format contains time series measurements of ocean currents. These data are obtained from current meter moorings and represent the Eulerian method of current measurement, i.e., the meters are deployed at a fixed point and measure flow past a sensor. Position, bottom depth, sensor depth and meter characteristics are reported for each station. The data record includes values of east-west (u) and north-south (v) current vector components at specified date and time. Current direction is defined as the direction toward which the water is flowing with positive directions east and north. Data values may be subject to averaging or filtering and are typically reported at 10 - 15 minute time intervals. Water temperature, pressure and conductivity or salinity may also be reported. A text record is available for optional comments.

During EX1202 Leg III between April 11 and April 29, 2012 on NOAA Ship Okeanos Explorer (EX), 24-hour operations occured in targeted areas in the Northern Gulf of Mexico and the Flower Garden Banks National Marine Sanctuary. Operations included daytime ROV dives at depths less than 4000m and nightly multibeam surveys with periodic XBT casts for calibration. Night operations will also include occasional CTD casts.

The Integrated Science Data Management (ISDM) office processes oceanographic profiles reported for the world oceans in near real-time from the Global Telecommunications System (GTS) for the Global Temperature and Salinity Profile Program (GTSPP). These data also support the activities of the Ship of Opportunity Programme Implementation Panel (SOOPIP) and the WOCE Upper Ocean Thermal Program WOCE UOT). The ISDM sends a copy of these data to the US NODC three times each week.

EX1202 Leg I of NOAA Ship Okeanos Explorer (EX) is focused on exploration of North Eastern region of Gulf of Mexico using the shipsâ Kongsberg EM302 multibeam sonar, EK 60 and Knudsen sub-bottom profiler. EX1202 Leg I operations are expected to commence on February 27, 2012 at Charleston, SC and conclude on March 14, 2012 at Tampa, FL. The planed transit line from Charleston, SC to the working grounds is ~ 1000 nautical miles and is expected to take ~ 5 days at an average speed of 8.5 knots. Multibeam mapping operations will be conducted 24 hours a day during the transit, including regular XBT casts.
