JASMINE is the first comprehensive study of the coupled ocean-atmosphere system in the eastern Indian Ocean and the southern Bay of Bengal. Observations made during the field phase of JASMINE sampled both prolonged break and active phases of the monsoon resulting in an unprecedented amount of research quality data defining the atmospheric and oceanic state during intra-seasonal transitions of the monsoon. The design of the JASMINE pilot study was based on the observation that the intra-seasonal variability of the monsoon, as it sways back and forth from active to inactive (or break) phases, is an important component of the monsoon system and one that is poorly sampled and simulated.

XBT data were collected from the USCGC WINONA in support of the Integrated Global Ocean Services System (IGOSS) project. Data were collected by the US Coast Guard (USCG) from 10 March 1974 to 08 April 1974. Data were processed by NODC to the NODC standard Universal Bathythermograph Output (UBT) format. Full format description is available from NODC at www.nodc.noaa.gov/General/NODC-Archive/bt.html. The UBT file format is used for temperature-depth profile data obtained using expendable bathythermograph (XBT) instruments. Standard XBTs can obtain profiles at depths of about 450 or 760 m. With special instruments, measurements can be obtained to 1830 m. Cruise information, position, date, and time are reported for each observation. The data record comprises pairs of temperature-depth values. Unlike the MBT data file, in which temperature values are recorded at uniform 5m intervals, the XBT Data File contains temperature values at non-uniform depths. These depths are at a minimum number of points ("inflection points") required to record the temperature curve to an acceptable degree of accuracy. On output, however, the user may request temperature values either at inflection points or interpolated to uniform depth increments.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) has the statutory mandate to collect hydrographic data in support of nautical chart compilation for safe navigation and to provide background data for engineers, scientific, and other commercial and industrial activities. Hydrographic survey data primarily consist of water depths, but may also include features (e.g. rocks, wrecks), navigation aids, shoreline identification, and bottom type information. NOAA is responsible for archiving and distributing the source data as described in this metadata record.

The dataset represents the Lidar elevations for Silver Falls State Park in Marion County, Oregon. The LiDAR data was collected during March 2007. This was a leaf-off condition. The lidar data are multiple return and bare earth classified. An Optech 3100 LiDAR system was mounted in a fixed-wing aircraft and flown 900 meters above ground level (AGL). A pulse repetition frequency (PRF) of 71 kHz with at least 100% overlap (minimum 50% side-lap) was used. Greater than 8 points per square meter and near nadir scan angles were used to increase penetration of vegetation to ground surfaces. Ground level GPS and aircraft IMU were collected during the flight. In some areas of heavy vegetation or forest cover, there may be relatively few ground points in the LiDAR data. Elevation values for open water surfaces are not valid elevation values because few LiDAR points are returned from water surfaces. Watershed Sciences, Inc. collected the LiDAR and created this data set for Oregon Parks and Recreation.

CREWS Standard (CREWS-STD) buoys are equipped to measure sea surface water temperature and conductivity (Sea-Bird Model SBE37-SM, Sea-Bird Electronics, Inc., www.seabird.com) at 1 m (nominal) below the water line and air temperature (R.M Young Model 41342); barometric pressure (Heise DXD and wind vectors (Vaisala WAS425A) at 2 m (nominal) above the water line. A compass (KVH C100 SE-25) is used in the calculation of wind direction and a GPS system provides geolocation. CREWS-STD buoys telemeter hourly data in near-real-time (NRT). Data telemetry serves to alert researchers to the potential of imminent or ongoing coral reef bleaching or other natural events (hurricanes, storm damage, cooling, etc.) so that additional field observations and data collection efforts can be initiated, if warranted. NRT data is available at http://www.pifsc.noaa.gov/cred/oceanography.php and is updated on a daily basis. When a buoy is recovered, a higher resolution (typically a 1800 second sampling interval) dataset is uploaded from the buoy's Environmental Data Logger (EDL). Please contact CRED with any questions. AERO-METRIC, INC. (AME) provided aerial photographic imagery collected by NOAA along the shoreline of Louisiana. The purpose of the imagery was to provide digital shoreline and orthophotos for NOAA nautical charts. The area covers the Barrier Islands of Terrebonne and Timbalier Bays on the coast of the State of Louisiana. The ground sample distance (GSD) for each pixel is 1.0 m. Ortho-rectified mosaic tiles are not intended for mapping, charting or navigation. Additional ortho-mosaic imagery is filed under separate NODC accession numbers.

The U.S. Department of Interior, Bureau of Land Management (BLM) contracted with Watershed Sciences, Inc. to collect high resolution topographic LiDAR data for multiple areas within the State of Oregon. The areas for LiDAR collection have been designed as part of a collaborative effort of state, federal, and local agencies in order to meet a wide range of project goals. This LiDAR data set was collected on April 7, 2012 and encompasses a portion of Yamhill County in Oregon. This data set consists of bare earth and unclassified points. The average pulse density is 8.91 pulses per square meter over terrestrial surfaces. The area of interest (AOI) encompasses approximately 5,580 acres and the total area flown (TAF) covers 6,137 acres. The TAF acreage is greater than the original AOI acreage due to buffering and flight planning optimization. In some areas of heavy vegetation or forest cover, there may be relatively few ground points in the LiDAR data. Elevation values for open water surfaces are not valid elevation values because few LiDAR points are returned from water surfaces. LiDAR intensity values were also collected.

NOAA's polar-orbiting satellites measure SST around the globe in near-real-time, and Coral Reef Watch produces a suite of products derived from this set of satellite SST and uses them to pinpoint areas around the world where corals are at risk for bleaching. This is a suite of operational products produced at 0.5 degree (approximately 50 km) spatial resolution twice-weekly. The products include nighttime sea surface temperature, nighttime sea surface temperature anomaly, coral bleaching HotSpots, and Degree Heating Weeks for the global oceans.
