The Fair Housing Act prohibits most discrimination in housing transactions based on federally recognized bases (race, religion, familial status, etc.) Cases are investigated by the Office of Fair Housing and Equal Opportunity (FHEO) within the Department of Housing and Urban Development or by state or local government agencies (FHAP agencies) who partner with FHEO to investigate these complaints.
