EDFacts School Improvement Grant 2010-11 (EDFacts SIG:2010-11) is one of 17 'topics' identified in the EDFacts documentation (in this database, each 'topic' is entered as a separate study); program data is available since 2005 at . EDFacts SIG:2010-11 (ed.gov/about/inits/ed/edfacts) annually collects cross-sectional data about students, teachers, principals, and schools from states to monitor and report performance on the School Improvement Grant (SIG) program at the school levels. EDFacts SIG:2010-11 data were collected using the EDFacts Submission System (ESS), a centralized portal and their submission by states is mandatory and required for benefits. Not submitting the required reports by a state constitutes a failure to comply with law and may have consequences for federal funding to the state. Key statistics produced from EDFacts SIG:2010-11 are from 14 data groups with information on Advanced Coursework, Dual Enrollment, Advanced Coursework/Dual Enrollment, Average Scale Scores, Increased Learning Time, Intervention Used, School Year Minutes, Student Attendance Rate, Teacher Attendance Rate, Persistently Lowest-Achieving Schools, Principal Evaluations, Principal Performance Level Names, Teacher Evaluations, and Teacher Performance Level Names. For the purposes of this system, data groups are referred to as 'variables', as a result of the structure and format of EDFacts' data.

Description

The USGS Structures service from The National Map (TNM) consists of data to include the name, function, location, and other core information and characteristics of selected manmade facilities. The types of structures collected are largely determined by the needs of disaster planning and emergency response, and homeland security organizations. Structures data are designed to be used in general mapping and in the analysis of structure related activities using geographic information system technology. The National Map structures data is commonly combined with other data themes, such as boundaries, elevation, hydrography, and transportation, to produce general reference base maps. The National Map viewer allows free downloads of public domain structures data in either Esri File Geodatabase or Shapefile formats. For additional information on the structures data model, go to http://nationalmap.gov/structures.html.

The World Glacier Inventory (WGI) contains information for over 130,000 glaciers. Inventory parameters include geographic location, area, length, orientation, elevation, and classification. The WGI is based primarily on aerial photographs and maps with most glaciers having one data entry only. Hence, the dataset can be viewed as a snapshot of the glacier distribution in the second half of the 20th century. It is based on the original WGI (WGMS 1989) from the World Glacier Monitoring Service (WGMS).

Description

Since January of 1989, the U.S Geological Survey (USGS) Energy Resources Program Geochemistry Laboratory Data Base has grown to contain the analytical data for over 200,000 samples worldwide. The Energy Geochemistry Data Base (EGDB) contains chemical analysis data for crude oil, natural gas, coal, water, and rock samples analyzed by the USGS Energy Resources Team's Geochemistry Laboratory, or by contracted-service laboratories. Data was also obtained from the literature and unpublished public domain sources. The sample types included are primarily rock, coal, oil, and gas. This information is used by the USGS for worldwide energy resource assessments and is periodically released to the public. Analytical data within the EGDB includes Rock-Eval pyrolysis, organic mass spectrometry, vitrinite reflectance, gas chromatography, stable carbon isotopes, inductively coupled plasma, inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry, mercury analysis and a number of other related geochemistry analyses that, in some instances, predate the EGDB. Throughout the years the Energy Program scientists have utilized these data to not only develop an understanding of the physical and geochemical processes responsible for hydrocarbon formation. but also as a tool to assess the oil and gas potential for sedimentary basins in both national and international settings.

EDFacts Teacher Quality 2011-12 (EDFacts TQ:2011-12) is one of 17 'topics' identified in the EDFacts documentation (in this database, each 'topic' is entered as a separate study); program data is available since 2005 at . EDFacts TQ:2011-12 (ed.gov/about/inits/ed/edfacts) annually collects cross-sectional data from states about teacher quality based on the performance on programs and activities supported by the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA), as amended, determined by whether teachers are classified as highly qualified for their assignment according to state definition. Indicators include the number of elementary and secondary classes in core academic subjects and the designation of a school's poverty quartile. EDFacts TQ:2011-12 data were collected using the EDFacts Submission System (ESS), a centralized portal and their submission by states is mandatory and required for benefits. Not submitting the required reports by a state constitutes a failure to comply with law and may have consequences for federal funding to the state. Key statistics produced from EDFacts TQ:2011-12 are from 3 data groups with information on State Poverty Designation, Teacher Quality in Elementary Classes, and Teacher Quality in Secondary Classes. For the purposes of this system, data groups are referred to as 'variables', as a result of the structure and format of EDFacts' data.

The Business Employment Dynamics statistics track changes in employment at the establishment level, revealing the dynamics underlying net changes in employment. The new quarterly data on Business Employment Dynamics are derived from the Covered Employment and Wages Program, also known as the ES-202 program. This program is the quarterly census of all establishments under State unemployment insurance programs, representing about 98 percent of employment on nonfarm payrolls. The data include all establishments subject to the State unemployment insurance (UI) laws and Federal agencies subject to the Unemployment Compensation for Federal Employees (UCFE) program. Major exclusions from UI coverage are the self-employed workers, religious organizations, most agricultural workers on small farms, members of the Armed Forces and certain small nonprofit organizations.

The North America Shaded Relief data were derived from the GTOPO30 elevation data. GTOPO30 is a global digital elevation model (DEM) with a horizontal grid spacing of 30 arc seconds (approximately 1 kilometer). GTOPO30 was derived from several raster and vector sources of topographic information. It was developed between 1993 and 1996 through a collaborative effort led by staff at the U.S. Geological Survey's EROS Data Center (EDC). The following organizations participated by contributing funding or source data: the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), the United Nations Environment Programme/Global Resource Information Database (UNEP/GRID), the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), the Instituto Nacional de Estadistica Geografica e Informatica (INEGI) of Mexico, the Geographical Survey Institute (GSI) of Japan, Manaaki Whenua Landcare Research of New Zealand, and the Scientific Committee on Antarctic Research (SCAR). This file is a replacement for the January 2003 map layer. This map layer was previously distributed as North America Shaded Relief.
