Description

The Floodplain Mapping/Redelineation study deliverables depict and quantify the flood risks for the study area. The primary risk classifications used are the 1-percent-annual-chance flood event, the 0.2-percent-annual- chance flood event, and areas of minimal flood risk. The Floodplain Mapping/Redelineation flood risk boundaries are derived from the engineering information Flood Insurance Studies (FISs), previously published Flood Insurance Rate Maps (FIRMs), flood hazard analyses performed in support of the FISs and FIRMs, and new mapping data, where available. The FISs and FIRMs are published by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA).

Description

The Digital Flood Insurance Rate Map (DFIRM) Database depicts flood risk information and supporting data used to develop the risk data. The primary risk classifications used are the 1-percent-annual-chance flood event, the 0.2-percent-annual- chance flood event, and areas of minimal flood risk. The DFIRM Database is derived from Flood Insurance Studies (FISs), previously published Flood Insurance Rate Maps (FIRMs), flood hazard analyses performed in support of the FISs and FIRMs, and new mapping data, where available. The FISs and FIRMs are published by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). The file is georeferenced to earth's surface using the Pennsylvania State Plane Coordinate System (North Zone) and Lambert Conformal conic projection. The specifications for the horizontal control of DFIRM data files are consistent with those required for mapping at a scale of 1:12,000.

Description

An orthoimage is remotely sensed image data in which displacement of features in the image caused by terrain relief and sensor orientation has been mathematically removed. Orthoimagery combines the image characteristics of a photograph with the geometric qualities of a map. For this dataset, 2-foot pixel resolution natural color digital orthimages were obtained from the West Virginia Statewide Addressing and Mapping Board. The orthoimages were mosaicked and reprojected by the USGS from the original 2-foot pixel, West Virginia North and South State Plane (feet) Coordinate Systems to Universal Transverse Mercator (UTM) (meters), Zone 17, NAD83 datum. Each orthoimage (DOQQ) provides the equivalent to a quarter of a 7.5-minute map (3.75 minutes of latitude and longitude) with overedge. The overedge is approximately 300 meters beyond the extremes of the corners of coverage. The naming convention is based on the U.S. Geological Survey 1:24,000 Topographic Map Series with the quadrant abbreviation, i.e. athens_ne.tif, etc. This data set covers the entire state of West Virginia including into UTM zone 18 on the east edge.

Description

FEMA Framework Basemap datasets comprise six of the seven FGDC themes of geospatial data that are used by most GIS applications (Note: the seventh framework theme, orthographic imagery, is packaged in a separate NFIP Metadata Profile): cadastral, geodetic control, governmental unit, transportation, general structures, hydrography (water areas and lines). These data include an encoding of the geographic extent of the features and a minimal number of attributes needed to identify and describe the features. (Source: Circular A16, p. 13).

Description

Recent developments in digital terrain and geospatial database management technology make it possible to protect this investment for existing and future projects to a much greater extent than was possible in the past. The minimum requirement for hydraulics data includes input and output files for all hydraulic models and spatial datasets that are needed to implement the models. Description

These files contain 2-foot GSD high-resolution orthorectified aerial image map products in GeoTIFF version 6.0 file format. GeoTIFF files are uncompressed raster images complete with coordinate information. The VBMP project encompasses the entire land area of the Commonwealth of Virginia. The State boundary is buffered by 1000 feet. Coastal areas of the State bordering the Atlantic Ocean or the Chesapeake Bay are buffered by 1000 feet or the extent of man-made features extending from shore. 1-foot resolution digital orthoimagery was developed over the majority of urban/suburban areas of the Commonwealth covering approximately 7,167 square miles and 2-foot resolution digital orthoimagery was developed over the rural areas of the Commonwealth covering approximately 31,923 square miles as defined by VGIN. 6-inch resolution digital orthoimagery was developed in limited urban areas covering approximately 1000 square miles.

Description

Coastal study as defined in FEMA Guides and Specifications, Appendix D: Guidance for coastal Flooding Analyses and Mapping submitted as a result of a coastal study. appendix D notes that a variety of analytical methodologies may be used to establish Base (1-percent-annual-chance) Flood Elevations (BFEs) and floodplains throughout coastal areas of the United States. Appendix D itemizes references for the methodologies currently in use by FEMA for specific coastal flood hazards, provides general guidance for documentation of a coastal flood hazards analysis, specifies flood hazard analysis procedures for the Great Lakes coasts, and outlines intermediate data submission for coastal flood hazard analyses with new storm surge modeling and revised stillwater flood level (SWFL). (Source: FEMA Guidelines and Specs, Appendix D "Guidance for Coastal Flooding analyses and Mapping", Section D.1. The FEMA "Atlantic Ocean and Gulf of Mexico Coastal Guidelines Update", February 2007 also provides additional guidelines for the Atlantic Coast.
