Description

The Digital Flood Insurance Rate Map (DFIRM) Database depicts flood risk information and supporting data used to develop the risk data. The primary risk classifications used are the 1-percent-annual-chance flood event, the 0.2-percent-annual- chance flood event, and areas of minimal flood risk. The DFIRM Database is derived from Flood Insurance Studies (FISs), previously published Flood Insurance Rate Maps (FIRMs), flood hazard analyses performed in support of the FISs and FIRMs, and new mapping data, where available. The FISs and FIRMs are published by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). The file is georeferenced to earth's surface using the Universal Transverse Mercator Zone 15 projection and coordinate system. The specifications for the horizontal control of DFIRM data files are consistent with those required for mapping at a scale of 6000-24000.

Description

We propose to develop a new highly sensitive instrument to confirm the existence of the so-called nano-dust particles, characterize their impact parameters, and measure their chemical composition. Simultaneous theoretical studies will be used to derive the expected mass and velocity ranges of these putative particles to formulate science and measurement requirements for the future deployment of the proposed Nano-Dust Analyzer (NDA)

Early dust instruments onboard Pioneer 8 and 9 and Helios spacecraft detected a flow of submicron sized dust particles coming from the direction of the Sun. These particles originate in the inner solar system from mutual collisions among meteoroids and move on hyperbolic orbits that leave the Solar System under the prevailing radiation pressure force. Later dust instruments with higher sensitivity had to avoid looking toward the Sun because of interference from the solar wind and UV radiation and thus contributed little to the characterization of the dust stream. The one exception is the Ulysses dust detector that observed escaping dust particles high above the solar poles, which confirm the suspicion that charged nanometer sized dust grains are carried to high heliographic latitudes by electromagnetic interactions with the Interplanetary Magnetic Field (IMF). Recently, the STEREO WAVES instruments recorded a large number of intense electric field signals, which were interpreted as impacts from nanometer sized particles striking the spacecraft with velocities of about the solar wind speed. This high flux and strong spatial and/or temporal variations of nanometer sized dust grains at low latitude appears to be uncorrelated with the solar wind properties. This is a mystery as it would require that the total collisional meteoroid debris inside 1 AU is cast in nanometer sized fragments. The observed fluxes of inner-source pickup ions also point to the existence of a much enhanced dust population in the nanometer size range.

This new heliospherical phenomenon of nano-dust streams may have consequences throughout the planetary system, but as of yet no dust instrument exists that could be used to shed light on their properties. We propose to develop a dust analyzer capable to detect and analyze these mysterious dust particles coming from the solar direction and to embark upon complementary theoretical studies to understand their characteristics. The instrument is based on the Cassini Dust Analyzer (CDA) that has analyzed the composition of nanometer sized dust particles emanating from the Jovian and Saturnian systems but could not be pointed towards the Sun. By applying technologies implemented in solar wind instruments and coronagraphs a highly sensitive dust analyzer will be developed and tested in the laboratory. The dust analyzer shall be able to characterize impact properties (impact charge and energy distribution of ions from which mass and speed of the impacting grains may be derived) and chemical composition of individual nanometer sized particles while exposed to solar wind and UV radiation. The measurements will enable us to identify the source of the dust by comparing their elemental composition with that of larger micrometeoroid particles of cometary and asteroid origin and will reveal interaction of nano-dust with the interplanetary medium by investigating the relation of the dust flux with solar wind and IMF properties.

Complementary theoretically studies will be performed to understand the characteristics of nano-dust particles at 1 AU to answer the following questions: - What is the speed range at which nanometer sized particles impact a spacecraft at 1 AU? - From what direction these particles impact at a spacecraft at 1 AU? This has implications on the field-of-view of the instrument. - What is the flux of particles at 1 AU assuming a break-up of approximately 10 tons/sec of cosmic material (approx. 10^25 particles) in the inner solar system? FORM NRESS-

Description

Volcanic research is a significant part of the "Earth Surface & Interior" focus area of the NASA Earth Science program. Of particular interest are sensors for measuring the chemical composition and emission rate of gases released by volcanoes, from magma to the atmosphere, both prior to and during eruptions. The vast majority of ground based plume observations concern sulfur dioxide (SO2), the third most abundant volcanic gas. Sulfur dioxide measurements provide valuable information concerning the masses and motions of underground magmas. Vista Photonics proposes an innovative self-calibrating optical technology for sensitive and selective in situ measurement of SO2 in volcanic gas plumes. The self-calibrating feature is intended to maintain the specified performance characteristics under harsh operating conditions. Phase I research will focus on demonstrating the feasibility of the innovative SO2 detector and outline the design of the Phase II prototype instrument. Successful completion of this program will lead to development of an inexpensive, compact, self-contained, lightweight SO2 measurement instrument suitable for use on a variety of ground based and airborne platforms including remotely operated aircraft and surface craft.

Description

Radar technology offers a very flexible, powerful tool for applications such as object detection, tracking, and characterization, as well as remote sensing, imaging, sounding, weather measurement and analysis. Historically, radar systems have tended to be either large, complex, power-hungry, purpose-built systems, or extremely simple systems of limited capability. More recently, miniaturization of high-performance programmable integrated circuit technologies as embodied in field-programmable gate arrays, as well as rapid advances in high-speed data conversion technologies at a gigasample per second and beyond, have enabled the implementation of direct-conversion radio frequency (RF) systems, including radar, that operate almost completely in the digital domain. In addition, solid-state high-power RF device technologies have improved in efficiency and speed to the point where highly efficient pulsed transmit sources are possible. As these device technologies have matured, their application in space environments has accelerated to the point where extremely flexible programmable radar systems can be implemented in a very small size, weight, and power footprint. Trident Systems has developed a powerful radar architecture called RAPTOR, validating it through flight testing on a number of Department of Defense programs; initial analysis has shown the feasibility of transitioning this design to the space environment. Through a comprehensive program of requirements development, trade studies, critical component and design analyses, fault mitigation simulation, and system design, Trident will develop the design for a complete space-qualifiable UHF/L-band radar transceiver in a 96mm x 90mm x 31mm PC-104e form factor that meets all customer mission needs, and is applicable to a wide range of applications (NASA and others). By basing the solution on Trident's proven RAPTOR technology, the system will rapidly achieve a high TRL.

Description

Sensing gas molecules is critical to environmental monitoring, control of chemical processes, space missions as well as agricultural and medical applications. Existing electrical sensor materials are based on semi-conducting metal oxides, silicon devices, organic materials and gas responsive polymers or ceramics. To achieve high chemical sensitivity, semi-conducting metal oxide sensors must be operated at elevated temperatures (200 to 600?C). This need for high temperature operation increases the device complexity and renders them unsuitable for real-time portable applications. On the other hand, conducting polymers and organic semi-conductors are suitable for room temperature operation, but exhibit limited sensitivity. Clearly, there is a need to develop new technology that will allow for operation at room temperature and atmospheric pressure and provide for high-sensitivity measurements and low response times. We have already experimentally demonstrated under our own Internal R&D funding, that carbon nanotubes provide this enabling technology This effort will experimentally demonstrate a new nanotube sensor technology, which is a radical departure from conventional nanotube sensor approaches. Tests already performed with the proposed carbon nanotube sensor indicate that the electrical response of each gas is unique and that the individual gas concentrations can also be determined.
