Description

Spring Creek National Fish Hatchery traditionally operates an adult ladder, without closure, from the start of the tule fall Chinook salmon run in late August until the run ceases in early October. Ladder operation is continuous during the tule fall Chinook salmon run to receive all hatchery origin fish. In recent years, Spring Creek NFH has recorded large returns of adult tule fall Chinook salmon often with several thousand fish entering the hatchery each day of the hatchery run. An alternative approach to ladder operations at Spring Creek NFH was attempted in 2003 with several half day and one full day ladder closure near the end hatchery run. Another large hatchery escapement 40,000 fish was expected during 2004 and during 2005 50,000. An assessment of the 20042005 ladder closures was planned with the following objectives: to determine if hatchery brood stock includes tule fall Chinook salmon not allowed access to the hatchery during a ladder closure; and to determine if the behavior of tule fall Chinook salmon changes during intermittent ladder closure, specifically if intermittent ladder closure increases natural spawning and straying of Spring Creek NFH returning adults.

With increasing population growth and land-use change, urban communities in the desert southwest are progressively looking to remote basins to supplement existing water supplies. Recent applications for groundwater appropriations from Dixie Valley, Nevada, a primarily undeveloped basin neighboring the Carson Desert to the east, have prompted a reevaluation of the quantity of naturally discharging groundwater. The objective of this study was to develop a new, independent estimate of groundwater discharge by evapotranspiration (ET) from Dixie Valley using a combination of eddy-covariance evapotranspiration measurements and multispectral satellite imagery. Mean annual groundwater ET (ETg) was estimated during October 2009-2011 at four eddy covariance sites. Two sites were located in phreatophytic shrubland dominated by greasewood and two were located on a playa. Estimates were scaled to the basin level by combining remotely sensed imagery with field reconnaissance and site-scale ETg estimates. Vegetation index and brightness temperature data were used to partition Dixie Valley into five discharging ET units, and scale actual and potential ETg to the basin level. ET units are spatially constrained by a groundwater discharge area which represents the area where discharge from evaporation by open water or bare soil and transpiration from phreatophytic plants exceeds the volume of water contributed by precipitation. Each ET unit represents a generalized grouping of vegetation and soil conditions that were used as the basis of estimation of total ETg. ET units were partitioned as: playa lake, playa, sparse shrubland, moderate-to-dense shrubland, and grassland.

Hydrographic and Impairment Statistics (HIS) is a National Park Service (NPS) Water Resources Division (WRD) project established to track certain goals created in response to the Government Performance and Results Act of 1993 (GPRA). One water resources management goal established by the Department of the Interior under GRPA requires NPS to track the percent of its managed surface waters that are meeting Clean Water Act (CWA) water quality standards. This goal requires an accurate inventory that spatially quantifies the surface water hydrography that each bureau manages and a procedure to determine and track which waterbodies are or are not meeting water quality standards as outlined by Section 303(d) of the CWA. This project helps meet this DOI GRPA goal by inventorying and monitoring in a geographic information system for the NPS: (1) CWA 303(d) quality impaired waters and causes; (2) hydrographic statistics based on the United States Geological Survey (USGS) National Hydrography Dataset (NHD); and (3) special designations recognizing waters of exceptional quality as defined in State water quality standards. Hydrographic and 303(d) impairment statistics were evaluated based on a combination of 1:24,000 (NHD) and finer scale data (frequently provided by state GIS layers). Information on State-designated uses and waters of exceptional quality are only available for a limited number of parks at this time.

Description

Production of upriver bright fall Chinook salmon at Little White Salmon National Fish Hatchery was introduced as part of the John Day Dam mitigation program in the early 1980s. Upriver bright fall Chinook salmon are not native to the Little White Salmon River basin and are an introduced stock for the Lower Columbia River Chinook Evolutionary Significant Unit, as listed under the Endangered Species Act. There is concern regarding potential ecological effects, especially hatchery introgression effects, if wide spread straying of this stock occurs in the Columbia River USFWS 2004. Objectives of this study were to determine if hatchery brood stock collection is representative of the hatchery return; determine if intermittent ladder openings increase natural spawning and straying of Little White Salmon National Fish Hatchery returning adults; and determine the final destination of fish not allowed access to the hatchery or selected for brood stock.

This data set describes wells (excluding observation wells) that are completed in the Arikaree aquifer and that were used to create a map of the generalized potentiometric surface of the Arikaree aquifer in the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation and Bennett County. Water levels in the wells were measured by a variety of people including the well drillers and U.S. Geological Survey personnel. The water-level data for this data set are based on the most recent measured value for the well through 2006. The range in water-level data for this data set was from 1929 to 2006. All water levels were retrieved from the U.S. Geological Survey's NWISWeb database at http://nwis.waterdata.usgs.gov/sd/nwis/gwlevels.

Description

The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), in cooperation with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), is producing detailed geologic maps of the coastal sea floor. Bathymetry and sidescan-sonar imagery, originally collected by NOAA for charting purposes, provides a fundamental framework for research and management activities in Long Island Sound, shows the composition and terrain of the seabed, and provides information on sediment transport and benthic habitat. During October 2008 NOAA completed hydrographic survey H11997 offshore in eastern Long Island Sound, and during May 2010 bottom photographs and surficial sediment data were acquired as part of a ground-truth reconnaissance survey of this area. Two interpretive data layers were derived from the multibeam echo-sounder and the ground-truth data used to verify them. In 1975 the USFWS began studies designed to define the biological characteristics of wild spring chinook Oncorhynchus tshawytscha and steelhead O. mykiss in the Warm Springs River. Additionally, research was initiated to document resident trout growth patterns and population status below the hatchery prior to hatchery releases. This report is an attempt to condense the wealth of information learned through these studies and document the evolutionary sequence of events that has molded the hatchery and management programs since 1975. It is hoped that this document will give the reader insight as to how a fishery program evolves and may help future managers anticipate the changes that may occur in these types of programs.

In an attempt to address the concerns raised as a result of the marking of the 2004 brood at Warm Springs NFH, a study plan was developed to evaluate the use of an automated marking trailer at Warm Springs NFH. An automated marking trailer and a manual marking trailer were used to mark and codedwire tag the brood year 2005 spring Chinook salmon at Warm Springs NFH. In this report, we compare tag retentions, mark quality, injury rates, and marking to release mortality between fish marked and tagged using an automated trailer and fish marked and tagged using a conventional manual trailer. A future report will look at releasetoadult survival rates.

Description

Warm Springs National Fish Hatchery is operated by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, and is located on the Warm Springs River within the Confederated Tribes of the Warm Springs Reservation of Oregon. For three brood years 198789, we applied ventral fin clips and adipose fin clipscodedwire tags in order to evaluate the two marks on hatchery performance of spring Chinook salmon Oncorhynchus tshawytscha. Each brood year, approximately 100,000 fish received a ventral fin clip and 100,000 were marked with an adipose fin clipcodedwire tag. For the 100,000 ventral fin clipped fish, 50,000 received a left ventral fin clip and 50,000 received a right ventral fin clip. The mark study was also nested within a diet study, where fish in ponds containing left ventral fin clips were fed one diet and fish in ponds containing right ventral fin clips were fed another diet. From our sampling at the hatchery, we found that: 1 each mark group within a diet had variable length frequency distributions at release; 2 age, length, and sex composition at return were similar for each marked group within a diet; and 3 survival to adult was affected by diet but not by type of mark. In closing, spring Chinook salmon marked with a ventral fin clip performed as well as fish marked with an adipose fin clipcodedwire tag; but sample sizes were small and survival to adult was low for all groups.
