Hydrographic and Impairment Statistics (HIS) is a National Park Service (NPS) Water Resources Division (WRD) project established to track certain goals created in response to the Government Performance and Results Act of 1993 (GPRA). One water resources management goal established by the Department of the Interior under GRPA requires NPS to track the percent of its managed surface waters that are meeting Clean Water Act (CWA) water quality standards. This goal requires an accurate inventory that spatially quantifies the surface water hydrography that each bureau manages and a procedure to determine and track which waterbodies are or are not meeting water quality standards as outlined by Section 303(d) of the CWA. This project helps meet this DOI GRPA goal by inventorying and monitoring in a geographic information system for the NPS: (1) CWA 303(d) quality impaired waters and causes; (2) hydrographic statistics based on the United States Geological Survey (USGS) National Hydrography Dataset (NHD); and (3) special designations recognizing waters of exceptional quality as defined in State water quality standards. Hydrographic and 303(d) impairment statistics were evaluated based on a combination of 1:24,000 (NHD) and finer scale data (frequently provided by state GIS layers). Information on State-designated uses and waters of exceptional quality are only available for a limited number of parks at this time.

CriticalHabitatWatershedOccupation is a digital hydrologic unit boundary layer of Level 5 (10-digit) WATERSHEDs for Maine that describe salmon critical habitat occupation status. The source data was developed by adding to the MeGIS Level 5 HUC 10 database, thus extending the spatial depiction of Watershed boundary regions to describe occupation status of salmon in Maine.

This annual narrative report for Big Stone NWR outlines Refuge accomplishments during the 1982 calendar year. The report begins with a summary of the years highlights and weather conditions. Land acquisition is covered. The report includes a planning section which discusses the master plan, management planning, public participation, and compliance with environmental and cultural resource mandates. Refuge administration is outlined; information about personnel, volunteer programs, funding, safety, and technical assistance is given. Habitat management is also covered; subjects include wetlands, forests, croplands, grasslands, grazing, fire management, and pest control. The wildlife section of the report discusses wildlife diversity, endangered and threatened species, waterfowl, marsh birds and waterbirds, shorebirds, raptors, game mammals, fisheries resources, wildlife propagation, marking and bird banding, and disease control. The public uses of the Refuge described in this report include outdoor classrooms, interpretive programs, hunting, fishing, trapping, wildlife observation, and law enforcement. The equipment and facilities section of the report provides information about new construction, major maintenance, equipment replacement, communication systems, and energy conservation. Items of interest are provided at the end. Refuge brochures are attached.

These data identify, in general, the areas where final critical habitat occurs for 99 listed plant species known historically from the island of Oahu. A total of approximately 22,274 hectares (ha) (55,040 acres (ac)) of land on Oahu fall within the boundaries of the 303 critical habitat units designated for these 99 species.

Description
These data are in support of report DS 456 (Arnold and others, 2009). 30 equal-area polygons generated using techniques described in Scott (1990). Polygons include areas overlying the High Plains Aquifer in Colorado having a depth to water less than 180 feet, a saturated thickness greater than 50 feet, and underlying irrigated agricultural lands. Described in Arnold and others (2009). Input saturated thickness and depth to water data from V.L. McGuire, written communication, 2008. Irrigated agricultural lands from Bauder and others (2004).

A bare earth elevation map (also known as a Digital Elevation Model, or DEM) of the Pearl River Delta in Louisiana and Mississippi was produced from remotely sensed, geographically referenced elevation measurements cooperatively by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), the University of New Orleans (UNO), and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA). Elevation measurements were collected over the area using the NASA Experimental Advanced Airborne Research Lidar (EAARL), a pulsed-laser ranging system mounted onboard an aircraft to measure ground elevation, vegetation canopy, and coastal topography. The system uses high-frequency laser beams directed at the Earth's surface through an opening in the bottom of the aircraft's fuselage. The laser system records the time difference between emission of the laser beam and the reception of the reflected laser signal in the aircraft. The plane travels over the target area at approximately 50 meters per second at an elevation of approximately 300 meters. The EAARL, developed by NASA at Wallops Flight Facility in Virginia, measures ground elevation with a vertical resolution of 15 centimeters. A sampling rate of 3 kilohertz or higher results in an extremely dense spatial elevation dataset. Over 100 kilometers of coastline can be easily surveyed within a 3- to 4-hour mission. When subsequent elevation maps for an area are analyzed, they provide resource managers with a useful tool regarding land development.

This data set is a digital soil survey and generally is the most detailed level of soil geographic data developed by the National Cooperative Soil Survey. The information was prepared by digitizing maps, by compiling information onto a planimetric correct base and digitizing, or by revising digitized maps using remotely sensed and other information. This data set consists of georeferenced digital map data and computerized attribute data. The map data are in a soil survey area extent format and include a detailed, field verified inventory of soils and miscellaneous areas that normally occur in a repeatable pattern on the landscape and that can be cartographically shown at the scale mapped. A special soil features layer (point and line features) is optional. This layer displays the location of features too small to delineate at the mapping scale, but they are large enough and contrasting enough to significantly influence use and management. The soil map units are linked to attributes in the National Soil Information System relational database, which gives the proportionate extent of the component soils and their properties.

Color infrared (CIR) aerial photographs were acquired as baseline imagery data to produce vegetation spatial database coverages of Petrified Forest National Park (PEFO) and environs. Aerial photos were collected on September 13, 14, 17, and 19 of 2003 and June 17 of 2004 at a scale of 1:6,000 The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) in coordination with Kansas State University, has produced spatially referenced aerial photo mosaic images of the aerial photographs for both the north and south portions of the park and their environs. The photo mosaics are raster datasets compressed with ERMapper (ERDAS), projected in Universal Transverse Mercator (UTM), Zone 12, using the North American Datum of 1983 (NAD83).

Hauling out behavior and foraging behavior of walruses on St. Matthew Island were investigated. Walruses hauled out at two sites on St. Matthew throughout the summer of 1982. Their use of the uglit was cyclic and regular, but each ugli had a different period, and both differed from periods of walrus use at Round Island. Proximity and richness of food resources were suggested as important factors affecting periods of cycles.
