The proposed Phase II project includes the design, fabrication, and testing of a fully-functional 320 element X-band antenna which will serve dual-roles as both the proof-of-design (POD) and the proof-of-manufacturability (POM) prototype of ThinKom's innovative low-cost electronically scanned array (ESA) antenna technology. Simultaneously emphasizing affordability and performance, this antenna subsystem will uniquely enable near-term wide deployment of airborne hazard detection and avoidance radar systems with greatly enhanced performance and functionality relative to currently fielded systems. This technology comprises a proprietary integrated "quasi-monolithic" feed/phase-shifter/radiator topology exclusively realized using low-risk low-cost flight-proven, manufacturing materials, components, and processes. In addition, this architecture is ideally-suited for simplified compact integration with a highly reliable, low-cost, low-power consumption beam steering controller (BSC) utilizing pre-existing COTS components. The expected RF loss through the feed, phase shifter, and radiator of this low-cost/high-performance topology is less than 1 dB at X-Band, which is no greater than (and in most cases less than) that of "traditional" (much) higher cost ESA implementations. Building upon the Phase I preliminary antenna subsystem design and highly successful phase-shifter risk-reduction verification testing accomplished in Phase I, the Phase II program will directly demonstrate and prove both the performance and revolutionary cost reduction potential of this new "no compromise" ESA architecture and technology. In addition to the targeted aviation hazard detection radar/sensor application, other benefiting applications would include ground mapping, atmospheric studies, and launch range surveillance radars and sensors as well as communication applications for which an agile highly directional beam is required such as high-gain LOS and NLOS (SATCOM) Data Links.

Information on the past and present orientation of the Earth's magnetic field is available from the National Geophysical Data Center (NGDC) which serves as the national data bank for geomagnetic data. The Earth's magnetic field has been measured by land surveys, ships, aircraft and satellites at hundreds of locations resulting in millions of observations. Many of the observations are of poor quality or are unevenly distributed around the globe. Because of these limiting factors and the variation of the main magnetic field with time, the Earth's field is usually approximated by mathematical models. These models, adjusted to fit selected available observations, have wide application in geophysical and space sciences. Surveyors can obtain data and information for individual specific locations worldwide. Past values of the magnetic field are available from models for areas within the conterminous U.S. from 1750 or from 1945 worldwide. These mathematical models must be periodically updated due to the changing nature of the Earth's magnetic field. NGDC maintains the models and data base of observations to track secular variation of the Earth's magnetic field. Models and software are available on-line. The global geomagnetic observations data bases for secular change studies include high-quality magnetic observations made at observatories worldwide since 1800. Other geomagnetic data bases are: IAGA Repeat Station data base which contains observations from exact reoccupations, Other land Surveys containing miscellaneous land observations worldwide since 1800 including a few thousand observations made at sea by the non-magnetic ships, Carnegie and Zarya, Vector airborne surveys from the Project Magnetic aircraft, satellite and selected marine observations. Most of the surface data are available on-line. At most locations, three magnetic elements were observed: Either declination (D), Inclination (I), and horizontal intensity (H), or declination, horizontal intensity, and vertical intensity (Z), or total intensity (F). Where possible, the values for other magnetic elements, usually the north component (X) and east component (Y), were derived by the computer. The altitude, latitude, and longitude are recorded for each observation. The observatory annual means file contains the results of more of the observatories operating since 1800. Files are revised as new data become available. Searches and plots of data from selected stations can be made. These secular change files are the principal source for tracking the long-period changes in the direction and intensity of the Earth's magnetic field. Other data include a digital bibliography of historical magnetic survey publications at NGDC and the co-located World Data Center-A. Over 750 reports published from the 1830's to 1980's were inventoried in a digital bibliography and digitally imaged in .PCX format. The digital images of these reports have been written to magnetic tape.

The geographically closed, non-migratory populations of endangered Laysan Teal (Anas laysanensis) were sampled in the wild. This species was once widespread across the Hawaiian archipelago, but became isolated on Laysan Island (415 ha) from the mid-1800s until 2004 when a translocation to Midway Atoll (596 ha) was undertaken to reduce extinction risks. We compared genetic diversity and quantified variation at microsatellite loci sampled from 229 individuals from the wild populations at Laysan Island (1999–2009) and Midway Atoll (2007–2010; n = 133 Laysan, n = 96 Midway birds). We identified polymorphic markers by screening nuclear microsatellites (N = 83). Low nuclear variation was detected, consistent with the species’ insular isolation and historical bottleneck. Six of 83 microsatellites were polymorphic.

These data were collected under a cooperative agreement with the Massachusetts Office of Coastal Zone Management (CZM) and the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), Coastal and Marine Geology Program, Woods Hole Coastal and Marine Science Center (WHCMSC). Initiated in 2003, the primary objective of this program is to develop regional geologic framework information for the management of coastal and marine resources. Accurate data and maps of sea-floor geology are important first steps toward protecting fish habitat, delineating marine resources, and assessing environmental changes due to natural or human impacts. The project is focused on the inshore waters of coastal Massachusetts, primarily in water depths of 3-30 meters deep. Data collected for the mapping cooperative have been released in a series of USGS Open-File Reports (http://woodshole.er.usgs.gov/project-pages/coastal_mass/html/current_map.html). The data collected in the study area located in northern Cape Cod Bay Massachusetts includes high-resolution geophysics (bathymetry, backscatter intensity, and seismic reflection), and ground validation (sediment samples, video tracklines, and bottom photographs). The data were collected during five separate surveys conducted between 2006 and 2008 and cover 480 square kilometers of the inner continental shelf. Bathymetric contours were generated from soundings collected during geophysical surveys conducted by the USGS from 1969 to 1982, and supplemented by data from other sources. The region covered by the map is the Chukchi Sea from the Bering Strait north to the Arctic Ocean, and Point Barrow, Alaska west to Herald Island, Russia. The map stops just east of Wrangel Island, Russia. Bathymetry is in meters, including 10 meter contour intervals from 10 to 100 meters, and 100 meter contour intervals at depths greater than 100 meters.

<p><strong>A</strong>tomic <strong>L</strong>ayer <strong>D</strong>eposition (ALD) is a cost effective nano-manufacturing technique that allows for the conformal coating of substrates with atomic control in a benign temperature and pressure environment.  By utilizing the effectiveness of this technique an ALD production method for depositing laminated films of Iridium and metal nitride source material for multilayer x-ray optics, a lamination of TiO2 and TiN for VUV protection and static charge dissipation and the formation of tuned nanopillars for sensors and filters is in the process of being developed.  The film deposition will be done utilizing a custom built in-house ALD reactor and the proposed work is in collaboration with the University of Maryland at College Park.</p><p>Success of the this work has been demonstrated through the development of a Passive Variable Emittance Film prototype for thermal control, Iridium Coated X-Ray Optics and nanolaminated film for the three-dimensional growth of carbon nanotubes for stray light suppression.</p><p>Novel deposition methods and materials justified the design and installation of a custom reactor where dynamic in situ measurements reduced the formulation of the materials system to prototype at a fraction of the cost.  Three specific examples of the reactors benefit include the formation of nanolaminated films, additive material protection and tunable nanopillars.</p><p>Nanolaminate films constitute diverse materials of periodic layers with distinct film thickness that measure on the order of nanometers.  The multilayered structure often imparts unique characteristics to the nanolaminate film where the periodic morphology may have physical properties that are far superior to single or pure material films.</p><p>Polymers and polymer composite materials used for lightweight spacecraft structural components are susceptible to surface damage by high-energy collisions with atomic oxygen found in low-Earth orbit and by the high fluxes of vacuum ultraviolet radiation. Because these materials are insulators, they also can accumulate significant levels of surface charge. Plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition (PECVD) of SiO2 films is effective at protecting polymer materials, but relatively thick PECVD must be used to eliminate pinholes and to assure sufficient film thicknesses over surfaces with significant topography.  An investigation of TiO2 and TiN coupled films is underway.  While each of these materials alone can provide a protective layer for the polymer, the TiO2 is particularly well suited to VUV protection and the TiN, being conductive, will help dissipate static charge.  A tertiary product of metal oxide ALD is its ability to protect polymeric films such as Kapton from AO erosion in low earth orbiting missions.   NASA Glen confirmed this property where samples of Kapton film coated with an ALD of a metal oxide were exposed to AO fluxes equivalent to 10 years resulted in mass conservation of 98%.</p><p>The formation of the tuned nanopillars is accomplished by utilizing nanomolds of sputtered aluminum on the substrate of choice.  The sputtered aluminum can be transformed into spatially arrayed pores of predefined length and diameter utilizing acidic baths and an applied voltage.  After pore/hole formation, material can be deposited within these structures utilizing ALD to produce standing nanotubes or pillars.  These initial developments in scaffold assisted nanogeometric formations have potential applications in rectifying nanoantennas, sensors (chemical, biological, medical), and novel p-type semiconductors for solar cells, natural gas filtration, catalysis and nanocapacitors.  This application has a potential follow on funding from technology that requires filtration or catalytic capabilities for non-hydrazine based “green” fuels.</p>

This data set contains information on Hawaiian monk seal gross necropsy (in some cases only field notes or minimal information) and histopathology results beginning in 1964. Data includes information on all recovered Hawaiian monk seal carcasses that were necropsied. Information derived from pathology reports is included when tissues were reviewed by pathologists. Necropsy tissues are collected by PSD personnel and cooperating scientists as part of the ongoing health and disease assessment. The tissues are reviewed by collaborating pathologists. All original paper reports are housed at PIFSC Kewalo Research Facility and most are available electronically. Data is available in an excel spreadsheet.

This Phase 1 proposal addresses the 2006 NASA SBIR Research Topic S8.05 Science Data Management and Visualization (GSFC). The subtopic we address is Distributed Data Management and Access: Dynamically configurable high speed access to data distributed and shared over wide area high speed network environments. We propose a novel offload engine NIC, with network connections scaling at n x 10Gbps increments. The application is for present (10Gbps) and next generation NASA and commercial cluster and grid computing systems requiring ultra high-speed, low-cost offload engines with rates ranging from 10 through future rates of 100 Gbps full-duplex. Successful completion of this Phase 1 project will prove feasibility of our innovation through architectural models, ultra high-speed logic simulations, and experimental results. Deliverables include system on chip core IP, initial firmware, and feasibility results showing UDP/IP from 10 - 100 Gbps full-duplex, and the maximum bandwidth for a variant of TCP/IP. We will also have the system design for our Phase 2 prototype system. Using a 10 Gbps NPU development system, we conduct a preliminary demonstration of offload engine performance.

This report is a digital compilation of information on Africa's coal-bearing geology found in the literature and is intended to be used in small scale spatial investigations in a Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and as a visual aid for the discussion of Africa's coal resources. The African continent contains approximately 5% of the world's proven recoverable reserves of coal (World Energy Council, 2007). A review of academic and industrial literature indicates that 27 nations in Africa contain coal-bearing rock. Existing U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) digital geology datasets provide the majority of the base geologic polygons in this dataset. Polygons for the coal-bearing localities were clipped from the base geology that properly represented the age and extent of the coal deposit as indicated in the literature. This dataset includes information regarding the rank, age and location of coal in Africa as well as the detailed source information responsible for each coal-bearing polygon. This product is not appropriate for use in resource assessments of any kind.
