The Geographic Information Retrieval and Analysis System (GIRAS) was developed in the mid 70s to put into digital form a number of data layers which were of interest to the USGS. One of these data layers was the Hydrologic Units. The map is based on the Hydrologic Unit Maps published by the U.S. Geological Survey Office of Water Data Coordination, together with the list descriptions and name of region, subregion, accounting units, and cataloging unit. The hydrologic units are encoded with an eight- digit number that indicates the hydrologic region (first two digits), hydrologic subregion (second two digits), accounting unit (third two digits), and cataloging unit (fourth two digits). The data produced by GIRAS was originally collected at a scale of 1:250K. Some areas, notably major cities in the west, were recompiled at a scale of 1:100K. In order to join the data together and use the data in a geographic information system (GIS) the data were processed in the ARC/INFO GUS software package. Within the GIS, the data were edgematched and the neatline boundaries between maps were removed to create a single data set for the conterminous United States. This dataset was created in support of a U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) study focusing on groundwater resources in the Great Basin carbonate and alluvial aquifer system (GBCAAS). The GBCAAS is a complex aquifer system comprised of both unconsolidated and bedrock formations covering an area of approximately 110,000 square miles. The aquifer system is situated in the eastern portion of the Great Basin Province of the western United States. The eastern Great Basin is experiencing rapid population growth and has some of the highest per capita water use in the Nation. These factors, combined with its arid setting, have levied intensive demand upon current groundwater resources and, thus, predictions of future shortages. Because of the large regional extent of the aquifer system, rapid growth in the region, and the reliance upon groundwater for urban populations, agriculture, and native habitats, the GBCAAS was selected by the USGS Water Resources program as part of the National Water Census Initiative to evaluate the nation's groundwater availability. This dataset contains hydrographic area (HA) boundaries and polygons for the GBCAAS study area. The study area consists of 165 HAs based on Great Basin HAs defined by the USGS in 1988 (Harrill and others, 1988; Buto, 2009). The study area is characterized by north-south trending alluvial basins separated by intervening mountain ranges. HA boundaries generally coincide with the topographic highs separating these basins but may also contain arbitrary divisions that have no topographic control. HAs generally consist of thick layers of unconsolidated geologic deposits in the basins and consolidated bedrock in the mountain ranges. The basins are underlain by bedrock at varying depths. Much of the bedrock in the study area consists of permeable carbonate and volcanic rock strata, both of which allow some degree of hydraulic connection between hydrographic areas. The hydrographic area boundaries in this dataset have been assigned a code identifying each boundary as a potential barrier, conduit, or neutral zone to groundwater flow between basins. Non-incremental improvements are necessary in lithium-ion batteries order to meet future space applications demands such as NASA's call for lithium-ion battery cathodes with specific capacity values exceeding 240mAh/g at C/2 discharge rate and 25:C. Novel concepts for lithium-ion battery chemistry and/or design are therefore desired. Yardney Technical Products, Inc. proposes a development of an advanced nano-composite cathode, based on two crucial components, each performing a different vital function:  The first component, a layered non-transition oxide material will provide the matrix of the composite and ensure that the cathode voltage falls above ~4.0V.  The metallic nano-particulate domains, dispersed uniformly within the layered oxide matrix will provide the composite cathode with a potentially high specific capacity. Metallic nanoparticles are expected to form an in-situ oxide phase upon cycling in a lithium ion battery. The composite electrode material may be coated with a thin layer of carbon in order to enhance the electronic conductivity of the as-synthesized composite electrode.

This dataset has monthly Precipitation data from the TAO/TRITON (Pacific Ocean, http://www.pmel.noaa.gov/tao/), RAMA (Indian Ocean, http://www.pmel.noaa.gov/tao/rama/), and PIRATA (Atlantic Ocean, http://www.pmel.noaa.gov/pirata/) arrays of moored buoys which transmit oceanographic and meteorological data to shore in real-time via the Argos satellite system. These buoys are major components of the CLIVAR climate analysis project and the GOOS, GCOS, and GEOSS observing systems. Monthly data is an average of daily values collected during a month. A minimum of 15 daily values are required to compute a monthly average. This dataset contains realtime and delayed mode data (see the 'source' variable). The Progress in International Reading Literacy Study, 2011 (PIRLS 2011) is part of the Progress in International Reading Literacy Study (PIRLS) program. PIRLS 2011 (http://nces.ed.gov/surveys/pirls/) is a cross-sectional study that provides international comparative information of the reading literacy of fourth-grade students and examines factors that may be associated with the acquisition of reading literacy in young students. The study was conducted using questionnaires and direct assessments of fourth-grade students. In the United States a total of 370 schools and 12,726 fourth-grade students participated in 2011. The final weighted student response rate was 96 percent and the final weighted school response rate was 85 percent. The overall weighted response rate was 81 percent. Key statistics produced from PIRLS 2011 are how well fourth-grade students read, how students in one country compare with students in another country, how much fourth-grade students value and enjoy reading, and internationally, how the reading habits and attitudes of students vary.

This data set provides model outputs and seasonal mean CO2 fluxes from the Atmospheric Carbon Cycle Inversion Intercomparison (TransCom 3), Level 2 inversion experiment. Inversion methods can be used to estimate surface CO2 fluxes from atmospheric CO2 concentration measurements, given an atmospheric transport model to relate the two. This Level 2 experiment inverted for the spatial and temporal pattern of the residual CO2 sources and sinks. There were 12 atmospheric tracer transport models utilized in this experiment. The data inverted were mean CO2 concentration data from 75 sites from the GLOBALVIEW-CO2 2000 data set for the period 1992-1996. The seasonal inversion consists of a 3 year forward simulation (365 days per year) containing 4 presubtracted tracers, 11 SF6 tracers, and 22 CO2 tracers (11 terrestrial, 11 oceanic) (Gurney et al., 2000). Carbon fluxes were estimated for each month of an average year determined as the mean of the 1990-1996 time period from an intercomparison of 12 different atmospheric tracer transport models. This data set provides input data, model output data,the cyclo inversion code, a basis function map, and estimated fluxes.

Coastal study data as defined in FEMA Gudelines and Specifications, Appendix D: Guidance for Coastal Flooding Analyses and Mapping, submitted as a result of a coastal study. Appendix D notes that a variety of analytical methodologies may be used to establish Base (1-percent-annual-chance) Flood Elevations (BFEs) and floodplains throughout coastal areas of the United States. Appendix D itemizes references for the methodologies currently in use by FEMA for specific coastal flood hazards, provides general guidance for documentation of a coastal flood hazard analysis, specifies flood hazard analysis procedures for the Great Lakes coasts, and outlines intermediate data submissions for coastal flood hazard analyses with new storm surge modeling and revised stillwater flood level (SWFL). The Mars Solar Balloon Lander (MSBL) is a novel concept which utilizes the capability of solar-heated hot air balloons to perform soft landings of scientific payloads on the Martian surface. In the MSBL concept, a dark colored or metalized zero pressure balloon is inflated with Martian atmospheric CO2 during initial descent suspended by a parachute.. As a result of the favorable optical qualities of the balloon?s coloration, the gas inside the balloon is warmed to temperatures considerably exceeding the surrounding ambient atmosphere, thereby providing buoyancy. The MSBL can thus achieve stable level flight during daylight, or can be used to deliver payloads to the ground with arbitrarily low rates of descent. After the payload is landed, the balloon can be released for a free flight remote sensing mission, or can be retained as a tethered asset by the lander serving many useful functions, including local aerial imaging, communications, or lander towing. Key technical challenges to the MSBL concern dealing with horizontal velocity during terminal descent. However the MSBL is competitive on a mass basis when compared to alternative landing technologies such as airbags, and offers many novel additional capabilities for combined surface and aerial operations.
