Description

The California Department of Fish and Game and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service will operate and maintain the South Bay Salt Ponds under this Initial Stewardship Plan ISP until the development of the longterm plan. Detailed design studies involving technical specialists in water quality, hydrology, soils, engineering and biologywetland ecology were used to prepare the ISP, which has the these objectives: to cease commercial salt operations; to introduce tidal hydrology to ponds where feasible; to maintain existing high quality open water and wetland wildlife habitat, including habitat for migratory and resident shorebirds and waterfowl; to assure ponds are maintained in a restorable condition to facilitate future longterm restoration; to minimize initial stewardship management costs; to meet all regulatory requirements, especially discharge requirements to maintain water quality standards in the South Bay.

Description

This report is about a survey that was done to assess the amphibian and reptile diversity of the Lahontan Valley in Nevada. The work contained in this summary can be considered baseline data for future monitoring of amphibian and reptile diversity in the Lahontan Valley. All specimens were identified to species using Stebbins 1985. Visual encounter surveys consist of walking a specific area and numerating all the species observed. A total of eleven sites were surveyed at least twice. The most abundant lizard species in the surveyed area are the great basin whiptail, longnosed leopard lizard and the sideblotched lizard. The great basin gopher snake and the wandering garter snake were the most abundant snake species in the survey area. The most abundant amphibian species found in the Lahontan Valley was the introduced bullfrog.

Description

The purpose of this plan is to outline the current status of invasive weeds at the Don Edwards San Francisco Bay NWR Environmental Education Center and to provide a detailed plan of action to reduce andor eradicate invasive weeds from the area. This plan promotes adaptive management concepts by evaluating different weed eradication techniques as they are implemented. Additionally, a monitoring protocol is described which will enable Refuge staff and volunteers to evaluate weed reduction techniques in relation to the objectives and facilitate adaptive management.

Description

This report summarizes the monitoring of populations and production of tundra swans on Selawik National Wildlife Refuge in 1985 as part of a longterm study. Radio telemetry was used to determine the local movements of the swans. Objectives of the study were to: determine trends in tundra swan populations and habitat use, and examine patterns of local movements to define the size of habitat areas needed by various age and geographic groups of the population. The methods used and a discussion of the results are included.
