Description

The presence of invasive species at Alligator River NWR threatens many of the resources the refuge is tasked with protecting. Alligator River NWR has an extensive network of canals, ditches, and natural waterways throughout the refuge. Aquatic invasive species such as phragmites Phragmites sp. and alligator weed Alternanthera philoxeroides have invaded many of these waterways, vastly inhibiting the movement of water through these systems and negatively impacting the use of these areas by waterfowl and other wildlife species. Aside from the impacts that invasive species are having on overtaking wetland habitat by displacing native plants, Alligator River is also struggling with the rise in sea level leading to salt water encroachment on its freshwater systems. This intrusion has led to the erosion of refuge shoreline as well as the loss of pine forest habitat and its conversion to salt marsh.As part of the pilot project, Utah State University was asked to conduct an inventory for targeted invasive nonnative plants within portions of the refuge that address the issues of invasive species introductions and sea level rise. While the purpose of the larger project is to develop a guide for conducting inventories on refuges, this inventory also provided valuable information to meet the invasive species management goals established at Alligator River National Wildlife Refuge
