Description

139 Aleutian Canada geese were released on Agattu during the summer of 1978.117 geese were incubator hatched and captivereared while 22 were wild reared geese from Buldir. The captivereared birds consisted of 52 oneyear old geese raised at the refuge propagation center on Amchitka, and 19 oneyear old, 17 twoyear old, 18 threeyear old, 8 fouryear old and 3 fiveyear old geese raised at the Patuxent Wildlife Research Center at Laurel, Maryland. Within this total, nine pairs were present: 17 captive reared adults and one wild bird that had been present at Amchitka since 1976. These pairs had been culled from the Amchitka breeding flock in the hope that they would be successful breeders under wild conditions.
