Summary
Description
The continued collection of information regarding calving and postcalving distribution, and initial productivity of the Porcupine Caribou Herd is important for several reasons. It provides an integral record of annual variation in caribou distributions relative to geographic area, habitat conditions and environmental factors. An understanding of these relationships is essential for assessment of potential impacts associated with various oil and gas development proposals on the coastal plain of ANWR. In addition, initial productivity data collected on the calving grounds is needed to monitor the population dynamics of the herd.
