The data sets in this directory were provided by Mr. Gregory Yetman and Drs. Stuart Gaffin and Deborah Balk from the Center for International Earth Science Information Network (CIESIN) at Columbia University. There are three data files at three spatial resolutions of 0.25, 0.5 and 1.0 degree in both latitude and longitude and for the reference year of 1990.Estimates of Gross Domestic Product (GDP) are commonly given for nations as a single aggregated number. This data set generates estimates of GDP density distributed subnationally to facilitate the integration of GDP with other data at a sub-national level and to promote interdisciplinary studies that include socioeconomic aspects. This is one of two coarse resolution Socioeconomic data sets included in the International Satellite Land Surface Climatology Project (ISLSCP) Initiative II data collection, the other being the Gridded Population of the World (GPW), also produced by CIESIN.

Monthly tabulated index of the East Atlantic Teleconnection pattern. The data spans the period 1950 to present. The index is derived from a rotated principal component analysis (RPCA) of normalized 500-hPa height anomalies from the period 1950-2000. The data source is the NCEP/NCAR Reanalysis. The resulting time series is then re-normalized to coincide with the 1981-2010 base period monthly means. The index is updated monthly. Calculating the index using the RPCA approach is a somewhat complicated process, in that it is not derived independently of the other extra tropical teleconnection pattern indices.

SUMMARY DDOD use case request to improve National Death Registry for use with outcomes research. WHAT IS A USE CASE? A “Use Case” is a request that was made by the user community because there were no available datasets that met their particular needs. If this use case is similar to your needs, we ask that you add your own requirements to the specifications section. The concept of a use case falls within the Demand-Driven Open Data (DDOD) program and gives you a formalized way to identify what data you need. It’s for anyone in industry, research, media, nonprofits or other government agencies. Each request becomes a DDOD use case, so that it can be prioritized and worked on. Use Cases also provide a wealth of insights about existing alternative datasets and tips for interpreting and manipulating data for specific purposes. PURPOSE PCORnet funded outcomes research often relies on NDI for mortality events not captured within the medical system Example: "Aspirin trial": Optimal maintenance dose of aspirin for secondary prevention of coronary artery disease (CAD) Example: Comparative Effectiveness of Liver Transplant Strategies for End-Stage Liver Disease Patients on Renal Replacement Therapy VALUE Complete data is a requirement in order to conduct research. In addition, mortality events outside of healthcare setting don't always get captured. This data would be useful in many comparative effectiveness research studies, regardless of whether funded by PCORI. USE CASE SPECIFICATIONS & SOLUTION Information about this use cases is maintained in a wiki: http://hhs.ddod.us/wiki/Use_Case_7:_National_death_registry_for_outcomes... It serves as a knowledge base. USE CASE DISCUSSION FORUM All communications between Data Users, DDOD Administrators and Data Owners are logged as discussions within GitHub issues: https://github.com/demand-driven-open-data/ddod-intake/issues/7 It aims to provide complete transparency into the process and ensure the same message gets to all participants. Please test short time periods prior to running large processing runs. Report any issues experiencedto the Geo Data Portal team at gdp@usgs.gov. Thanks! Description: http://portal.nccs.nasa.gov/portal_home/published/NEX.html The NASA Earth Exchange (NEX) Downscaled Climate Projections (NEX-DCP30) dataset is comprised of downscaled climate scenarios for the conterminous United States that are derived from the General Circulation Model (GCM) runs conducted under the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project Phase 5 (CMIP5) [Taylor et al. 2012] and across the four greenhouse gas emissions scenarios known as Representative Concentration Pathways (RCPs) [Meinshausen et al. 2011] developed for the Fifth Assessment Report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC AR5). The dataset includes downscaled projections from 33 models, as well as ensemble statistics calculated for each RCP from all model runs available. The purpose of these datasets is to provide a set of high resolution, bias-corrected climate change projections that can be used to evaluate climate change impacts on processes that are sensitive to finer-scale climate gradients and the effects of local topography on climate conditions. Each of the climate projections includes monthly averaged maximum temperature, minimum temperature, and precipitation for the periods from 1950 through 2005 (Retrospective Run) and from 2006 to 2099 (Prospective Run).

This record is an unpublished report about the history of Native Americans, slaves and freedmen in the Pee Dee. It is a historical report but intended for use as educational material. The goal of this publication is to help teachers better present the unique and diverse history of the Pee Dee region to their students. We have incorporated three basic themes of Pee Dee history Native American, African American Slave and Plantation Life, and Postbellum Tenancy. In each we have tried to not only provide teachers with the background to integrate Pee Dee regional material into their classroom studies of South Carolina history, but also to begin implementing a integrated curricula which incorporates math and science. We have tried to encourage the use of higher learning skills while still providing plenty of latitude so all students could benefit from the materials. An integrated curricula, while relatively new to many programs, is very simple. It recognizes that our current method of teaching isolates both the student and the teacher from the broad pattern of interdisciplinary understanding. Integrated curricula allow the student to better understand how diverse concepts come together to promote a fuller understanding of the world and essential concepts. By integrating cultural heritage with components of math and science, this program provides a more exciting, and more worldly, view of South Carolina. It promotes a greater interest in both history and other disciplines. It also allows students and teachers to better understand the dynamic relationship between history, agricultural endeavors, and economic factors. It encourages students to understand, not simply to memorize and parrot. This integrated curricula is developed to increase critical thinking and maximize the participation of the student in the learning process. Coupled with a field trip to the archaeological site, students will have the opportunity to not only better understand the history of their region, but also to see that history being uncovered and explored through archaeology. This combination provides students and teachers with a rare opportunity. This booklet is organized to allow teachers to quickly identify the information essential for curriculum development maximizing the educational potential of the program. Included is information on the goals and objectives of this program, additional background information to provide teachers with the cultural heritage and history content necessary to teach the lessons, three individual teacher lesson plans, student worksheets, and extension activities. While designed for use primarily in Grade 8, to correlate with the instruction of South Carolina History, these materials have wide applicability. With relatively little modification they can be used in Grades 312. Teachers should also be aware that not only does Chicora Foundation offer additional programs and inclass room talks, but the Pee Dee Heritage Center, at Coker College, offers other unique teaching opportunities, including a Tobacco History Curriculum which traces the history of tobacco from Native American use to the early twentieth century. The Pee Dee Heritage Center can be reached at 8033838000 and Chicoras address and telephone number are listed on the title sheet of this publication.

Assessment of potential toxicity and aquatic community impacts associated with membrane and ion exchange water treatment facility effluents in coastal North Carolina
Published By US Fish and Wildlife Service, Department of the Interior
Issued almost 10 years ago
Summary
Description
The application of reverse osmosis and ion exchange water treatment of groundwater to meet the growing potable water demand in eastern North Carolina has prompted interest in the potential environmental impacts of these unique water treatment processes. These processes generate a reject water comprised of concentrated salts, metals, and other constituents and major ion toxicity is an important concern in other states where these drinking water production technologies are more prevalent. Effluent and receiving stream samples were collected at three ion exchange and two reverse osmosis membrane water treatment plants WTP in North Carolina. Routine water quality characteristics, ion, nutrient and metal concentrations were documented in 15 effluent and 30 receiving stream samples between 2004 and 2005. Facility and processspecific differences in water quality characteristics of effluents collected from the ion exchange WTPs were apparent. Effluent ion concentrations were typically highest during the sodium regeneration cycle followed by the final rinse and backwash cycles of the ion exchange treatment process. Total residual chlorine concentrations in effluent from one ion exchange facility exceeded the state standard of 17 gL by 8 to 36fold. Effluent characteristics differed substantially between the two reverse osmosis WTPs likely due to source water chemistry; however, effluent samples from each facility were relatively uniform in chemical composition between sampling events. To determine the significance of ion imbalance toxicity associated with process effluents, 15 chronic baseline whole effluent toxicity WET tests were conducted using Ceriodaphnia dubia water flea and Americamysis bahia opossum shrimp in freshwater and saltwater exposures, respectively. Only one effluent sample was not acutely or chronically toxic to test organisms during the baseline WET tests. The toxicity of ion exchange effluents varied based on the treatment cycle with sodium regeneration samples being most toxic at all three facilities and rinse and backwash cycles generally associated with lower toxicity. Subsequent toxicity tests using whole effluent and synthetic effluent test mixtures were performed to identify the potential for major ion imbalance as a source of toxicity in the baseline tests. Of the 14 effluent samples where subsequent tests were conducted, results indicated that sublethal toxicity in only one sample appeared to be related to a constituent other than the major ions; the results of testing with another sample were inconclusive due to elevated control mortality. Bioassessment of benthic community structure was also conducted to determine potential aquatic community structure impacts in the vicinity of the WTPs. Quantitative assessment could only be performed in the receiving stream Filbert Creek for two ion exchange facilities. Although an ion gradient potentially related to hypersaline effluent releases or windtidal influence was present in Filbert Creek, increasing taxa richness and decreasing biotic index values were found along this gradient suggesting that ion concentrations present have not uniquely stressed benthic communities. At the remaining three WTP sites, qualitative assessment indicates the presence of limited benthic communities dominated by species tolerant of lowflow and lowoxygen conditions. Study results provide sufficient evidence that ion concentrations in reverse osmosis and ion exchange water treatment plant effluents are a primary source of the effluent toxicity. Proposed management recommendations focus on more closely matching effluent and receiving stream ion characteristics at existing and proposed WTPs by either diluting effluents prior to discharge in freshwater environments and maximizing instream dilution through outfall design and placement.
