Description

As a part of National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) management of the endangered Cook Inlet beluga whale population, a database of opportunistic beluga whale sightings was compiled from reports made by the general public, aircraft patrols, wildlife surveys, and military and industry monitoring studies. Sightings are reported to NMFS Alaska Regional (AKR) office personnel either by voice- or e-mail. Sighting data are then transcribed and sent to the NMFS National Marine Mammal Laboratory (NMML) for entry into the database. Data are first assessed for quality during transcription by NMFS AKR personnel. Secondary review and confirmation is undertaken by NMFS NMML personnel prior to entry of data into the Access Database.

Description

This spatial data layer is a cell-based Raster model characterizing the contribution of phosphorus (P) to streams from weathering and erosion of surficial geologic materials for the conterminous United States, and has been created as part of the SPARROW (Spatially Referenced Regressions on Watershed Attributes) water-quality model implementation. SPARROW provides estimates of total nitrogen and phosphorus load in surface waters from point and non-point sources. This data set represents only potential for P contributions, and does not include N. The characterization of contribution of P from geologic materials will help separate the effects of natural or background sources from anthropogenic sources of P, such as from municipal wastewater or agricultural practices. The potential of a watershed to contribute P from naturally occurring geologic materials in the watershed to the adjacent receiving stream is characterized using geochemical data from bed-sediment samples (USGS National Geochemical Survey, National Uranium Resource Evaluation (NURE), Smith 1979) collected from first-order streams in relatively undisturbed watersheds. Bed sediment samples were collected from 1975 through 1980. The bed-sediment phosphorus concentrations (BSPconc) in this data set represent BSPconc in the absence of anthropogenic sources and therefore spatial variation in BSPconc can be used to indicate spatial variation in the potential to contribute naturally occurring P from the geologic materials in the watershed to the stream. A continuous mapped distribution of BSPconc in headwater streams for the conterminous U.S. was prepared by summarizing BSPconc from 50,740 bed-sediment samples by geologic unit using regional-scale geologic map units (GMU's). The GMU's delineate areas with similar lithochemistry based on geologic age as well as ecoregion units. GMU’s were created by combining surficial geology (Hunt, Charles D., 1979) with Level IV Ecoregion units (U.S. Environmental Protection Agency 2011). This data set represents the mean BSPconc value for each GMU. The spatial pattern of BSPconc in headwater streams is offered as a data layer, representing best available information at the regional scale, with the caveat that its performance as a surrogate for contribution of P from watershed geologic materials to in-stream levels of P is weakened by not accounting for variability across headwater streams in the rates of net deposition and processing of P in the streambed.

Description

Previous status assessments of marine turtles have assumed that the natural sex ratio of a marine turtle population is 1:1 (e.g. Conant et al. 2009). However, this is largely speculative and is based on few data, a troubling fact considering the importance of sex ratios when modeling the status of marine turtle populations. Marine turtles exhibit temperature sex determination (TSD), such that the overall sex ratio of hatchlings produced on a nesting beach is affected by the incubation temperatures on that beach (Mrosovsky and Yntema 1980, Rimblot et al. 1985). This creates unique susceptibility of marine turtles to global climate change and deforestation at nesting beaches (Hawkes et al. 2007). And although research has shown that the temperature threshold may vary among species and beaches, there are relatively few studies on hatchling sex ratios (Chevalier et al. 1999, Wibbels 2003, Mrosovsky et al. 2009). Considering the extreme importance of knowing sex ratio when modeling population abundance and trends, it is essential to conduct studies to determine sex ratio at various nesting beaches. In this study, we proposed to monitor thermal environments at the St. Croix, USVI, leatherback turtle nesting beach and the Bahia de Jiquilisco-Xiriualtique Biosphere Reserve in El Salvador for hawksbill turtles.

Description

Environmental Sensitivity Index (ESI) maps are an integral component in oil-spill contingency planning and assessment. They serve as a source of information in the event of an oil spill incident.ESI maps contain three types of information: shoreline habitats (classified according to their sensitivity to oiling), sensitive biological resources, and human-use resources. Most often, this information is plotted on 7.5 minute USGS quadrangles, although in the Alaska ESI maps, USGS topographic maps at scales of 1:63,360 and 1:250,000 are used, and in other ESI maps, NOAA charts have been used as the base map. Collections of these maps, grouped by state or a logical geographic area, are published as ESI atlases. Digital data have been published for most of the U.S. shoreline, including Alaska, Hawaii, and Puerto Rico.

Description

This report, which is part of a four-volume series, provides a cross-national comparison of the social security systems in 48 countries in Africa. It summarizes the five main social insurance programs in those countries: old-age, disability, and survivors; sickness and maternity; work injury; unemployment; and family allowances. The other regional volumes in the series focus on the social security systems of countries in Europe, Asia and the Pacific, and the Americas. Together, the reports provide important information for researchers and policymakers who are reviewing different ways of approaching social security challenges and adapting the systems to the evolving needs of individuals, households, and families.

The National Reporting System for Adult Education, 2012-13 (NRS 2012-13) is part of the Adult Education and Family Literacy program; program data is available since 1997 at . NRS 2012-13 (http://www.nrsweb.org) is a cross-sectional study that was designed to monitor performance accountability for the federally funded, state-administered adult education program. States were required to submit their progress in adult education and literacy activities by reporting data on core indicators of outcomes on all adult learners who receive 12 or more hours of service as well as state expenditures on the adult education program. States could also report on additional, optional secondary measures that included outcomes related to employment, family, and community. The study was conducted using a web-based reporting system of states. NRS 2012-13 is a universe survey, and all states submitted data. Key statistics produced from the study include student demographics, receipt of secondary school diploma or general education development (GED) certificate, placement in postsecondary education or training, educational gain, and employment placement and retention.
