Description

This NOAA Fundamental Climate Data Record (FCDR) from Colorado State University (CSU) contains brightness temperatures that have been improved and quality-controlled over the observation time period. The temperature data are from the Special Sensor Microwave Imager (SSM/I) and Special Sensor Microwave Imager Sounder (SSMIS) series of passive microwave radiometers carried onboard the Defense Meteorological Satellite Program (DMSP) satellites. This dataset encompasses data from a total of nine satellites including the SSM/I sensors on board DMSP satellites F08, F10, F11, F13, F14, and F15 as well as the SSMIS sensors on board DMSP satellites F16, F17, and F18. The data record covers the time period from July 1987 through the present with a 7 to 10 day latency. The spatial and temporal resolutions of the FCDR files correspond to the original resolution of the source TDR observations. There are roughly 15 orbits per day with a swath width of approximately 1400 km resulting in nearly global daily coverage. The spatial resolution of the data is a function of the sensor/channel and varies from approximately ~50 km for the lowest frequency channels to ~15km for the high-frequency channels. The processing of the FCDR from the BASE Temperature Data Record (TDR) (also produced by CSU) includes a rigorous quality control of the original TDR data, updated geolocation information, corrections for known issues/problems, and adjustments for residual intercalibration differences between sensors. The output parameters include the observed brightness temperatures for each of the seven SSM/I channels and 24 SSMIS channels at the original sensor channel resolution along with latitude and longitude for each pixel, time, quality flags, and view angle information. The file format is netCDF-4 with added metadata that follow the Climate and Forecast (CF) Conventions and Attribute Convention for Dataset Discovery (ACDD).

An orthoimage is remotely sensed image data in which displacement of features in the image caused by terrain relief and sensor orientation has been mathematically removed. Orthoimagery combines the image characteristics of a photograph with the geometric qualities of a map. For this dataset, 2-foot pixel resolution natural color digital orthimages were obtained from the West Virginia Statewide Addressing and Mapping Board. The orthoimages were mosaicked and reprojected by the USGS from the original 2-foot pixel, West Virginia North and South State Plane (feet) Coordinate Systems to Universal Transverse Mercator (UTM) (meters), Zone 17, NAD83 datum. Each orthoimage (DOQQ) provides the equivalent to a quarter of a 7.5-minute map (3.75 minutes of latitude and longitude) with overedge. The overedge is approximately 300 meters beyond the extremes of the corners of coverage. The naming convention is based on the U.S. Geological Survey 1:24,000 Topographic Map Series with the quadrant abbreviation, i.e. athens_ne.tif, etc. This data set covers the entire state of West Virginia including into UTM zone 18 on the east edge.

To obtain valid and reliable data, Human Factors Engineering (HFE) evaluations are currently conducted by people with specialized training and experience in HF. HFE evaluations designed and conducted by engineers without the necessary HF expertise run the risk of producing useless or misleading results. Alternatively, the HFE is simply not conducted. To ameliorate these problems, MTI proposes to develop the Human Factors Evaluation Mentor (HFEM) to guide non-HF experts in the design and conduct of HFE. The HFEM will use an innovative combination of Case-Based Reasoning (CBR) and Rule-Based Systems (RBS) to develop prescriptive designs for a set of routine HF evaluation methods. This powerful combination has not been used previously in advisory systems. The cases and rules used to develop the evaluation prescription will be drawn from a team of highly experienced HFE professionals. A characteristic of CBR is that successful applications add to the case data base and thereby continuously improve the HFEM. In Phase I MTI will develop and demonstrate a limited number of evaluation methods. Phase 2 work will expand the scope of evaluation types included in the HFEM incorporating HFE methods that best meet NASA's needs.

Environmental Sensitivity Index (ESI) maps are an integral component in oil-spill contingency planning and assessment. They serve as a source of information in the event of an oil spill incident. ESI maps are a product of the Hazardous Materials Response Division of the Office of Response and Restoration (OR&R).ESI maps contain three types of information: shoreline habitats (classified according to their sensitivity to oiling), human-use resources, and sensitive biological resources. Most often, this information is plotted on 7.5 minute USGS quadrangles, although in Alaska, USGS topographic maps at scales of 1:63,360 and 1:250,000 are used, and in other atlases, NOAA charts have been used as the base map. Collections of these maps, grouped by state or a logical geographic area, are published as ESI atlases. Digital data have been published for most of the U.S. shoreline, including Alaska, Hawaii and Puerto Rico.

The lidar data had a nominal point spacing no greater than 1m with a side lap that did not exceed 60%. The lidar data was flown, under went boresight calibration, was processed and then converted to the final deliverable datum and projection provided as NAD83/2007 New Jersey State Plane Coordinate System in US Survey Feet. The vertical datum was North American Vertical Datum 1988 (NAVD88).

Alcator C-Mod at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology is operated as a DOE national user facility. This digital elevation model (DEM) is a part of a series of DEMs produced for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Office for Coastal Management's Sea Level Rise and Coastal Flooding Impacts Viewer. The DEM includes the best available lidar data known to exist at the time of DEM creation that meets project specifications for those counties within the boundary of the Houston/Galveston TX Weather Forecast Office (WFO), as defined by the NOAA National Weather Service. The counties within this boundary are: Jackson, Matagorda, Brazoria (portion), Harris (portion), Galveston, and Chambers. For all the counties listed, except for Harris, the DEM is derived from LiDAR data sets collected for the Texas Water Development Board (TWDB) in 2006 with a point density of 1.4 m GSD. LiDAR data for Harris County was collected in October 2001 by the Harris County Flood Control District Tropical Storm Allison Recovery Project (TSARP) with a point density of 2.0 m GSD. Hydrographic breaklines used in the creation of the DEM were delineated using LiDAR intensity imagery generated from the data sets. The DEM is hydro flattened such that water elevations are less than or equal to 0 meters. The DEM is referenced vertically to the North American Vertical Datum of 1988 (NAVD88) with vertical units of meters and horizontally to the North American Datum of 1983 (NAD83). The resolution of the DEM is approximately 10 meters.

Description

Grooved aluminum/ammonia Constant Conductance Heat Pipes (CCHPs) are the standard for thermal control in zero-gravity. Unfortunately, they are limited in terms of their heat flux capability, approximately 5W/cm2. Incident heat flux for laser diode applications is on the order of 5-10W/cm2, although this is expected to increase towards 50W/cm2. This is a severe limitation for axial groove (CCHP) as well as loop heat pipes (LHP). Standard CCHPs are also not suitable for Lunar and Martian Landers and Rovers, since they can only operate with a very small adverse elevation, on the order of 0.10 inch. Landers can have tilts of 120<SUP>o</SUP>, while rovers can have tilts of 145<SUP>o</SUP>. As a result, a wick with a higher heat flux capability and pumping capability is required. This program will develop heat pipes with both 1) Sintered wicks, and 2) Hybrid grooved and sintered wicks. Heat pipes with both wick designs will be capable of operating at heat fluxes in the ten's of watts per cm2, and in Lunar or Martian environments at large slopes against gravity. An all-sintered wick will be used when the entire heat pipe must be able to operate against gravity, while a hybrid wick will be used when the condensers will always be gravity aided on the planetary surface.
