This dataset is a 1:15 million scale map of forest stand carbon for the land area of Russia (Stone et al., 2000). The objective was to create a first approximation of the forest stand carbon reserves of Russia. Data include continuous estimates of forest stand carbon in units of metric tons/ha of carbon (C) and categorized data depicting rages of forest stand carbon. The resulting maps show forest stand C by region in a spatially explicit form. It is the first map of its type for Russia of which we are aware. The mapped C represents 96% of the total of 26.1 Pg forest tree stand C described by Alexeyev and Birdsey (1994) and Alexeyev et al. (1995). Of the remaining 4%, nearly half was due to bushes, which were assumed not to be mapped in the 1973 forest cover map.The source data for the forest stand carbon map were acquired by map digitization from the Atlas of Forests for the Soviet Union (State Committee on Forests, 1973) and spatial application and arithmetic manipulation of carbon storage data from Alexeyev and Birdsey (1998).

Description

This collection consists of both analog and digital aerial photographs from Arctic areas in and around Baffin Bay, the Labrador Sea, the Arctic Ocean, the Beaufort and Chukchi Seas, and the Bering Sea and Strait from 1962 to 1984 as well as data reports from 1962 through 1971.The US Navy’s Project Birdseye spanned approximately 1962 to the mid-1980s. Over more than 20 years, the project generated numerous reports as well as visible band photographs and other data. The aerial photographs reside in 99 film canisters, each approximately a foot tall and six inches in diameter containing roughly 400 photographic negatives in a long film roll. Photographs from seven of the canisters have been digitized, resulting in 1752 image files. These are available via FTP along with project reports and documents on the history of Project Birdseye. In addition to the film canisters, two boxes of flight data logs and maps are currently held by NSIDC.

This dataset contains physical, chemical, and biological data collected during ten years of near-monthly shipboard surveys carried out in Mobile Bay between May 1989 and December 1999. Station locations ranged from the Mobile River delta to the mouth of Mobile Bay, from Bon Secour to the eastern part of Mississippi Sound, and outside Mobile Bay in the northern Gulf of Mexico. Hydrographic profiles and water samples were collected at each station. Purpose: To examine the effects of river discharge, suspended sediment dynamics, and nutrient inputs on phytoplankton production in the Mobile Bay ecosystem.

In 1999, JAMSTEC and MetOcean Data System Ltd. developed a new drifting buoy, named J-CAD (JAMSTEC Compact Arctic Drifter), to conduct long-term observations in the Arctic multi-year ice zones (Hatakeyama and Monk, 2001). The J-CAD is a state-of-the-art compact and inexpensive drifting buoy, designed and developed using the latest technologies, and incorporated the vast amount of engineering knowledge and experience gained from the IOEB program. Since 2000, JAMSTEC has been conducting operations of the J-CADs in order to measure the structure of upper-ocean currents and water properties under the multi-year ice of the Arctic Ocean for a better understanding the role of the Arctic Ocean for the global climate. As of now, JAMSTEC has installed five J-CADs into the sea-ice of the Arctic Ocean and has been collecting recent oceanographical and meteorological data. The J-CAD system has three types of sensors: meteorological, oceanographic, and buoy status sensors. The four meteorological parameters measured are air temperature, barometric pressure, wind speed and direction. For oceanographic observations, the J-CAD can be equipped with four CT sensors (SBE37IM), two CT sensors with a pressure sensor (SBE37IM), and two ADCPs (WH-ADCP 300 kHz). The buoy monitor sensors comprise a compass with a tile sensor, GPS, and thermistor to measure the temperature of water surrounding the J-CAD hull. Three buoys, the J-CAD 1, 3, and 4 were deployed near the North Pole in April 2000, 2001, and 2002, respectively, in collaboration with the NPEO (North Pole Environmental Observatory) Project supported by the U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF). Data transmission from the J-CAD 1 and 3 has already ceased. The J-CAD 4 is currently conducting observations in the Eastern Arctic Ocean. Next April, we are scheduled to deploy the J-CAD 6 near the North Pole. The J-CAD 2 and 5 were deployed in the Beaufort Sea from the Canadian Icebreaker in September 2000, and August 2002, respectively. The operation of the J-CAD 5 has been carried out under the Canada-Japan joint project, JWACS (Joint Western Arctic Climate Studies).

Bathymetry for Baffin Bay was derived from two surveys containing 14,924soundings. No surveys were omitted and no points were deleted. The averageseparation between soundings was 129 meters. Both surveys dated from 1968.The range of soundings was 0.2 meters to -4.9 meters at mean low water. Meanhigh water values between 0.1 and 0.3 meters were assigned to the shoreline.DEM grid values outside the shoreline (on land) were assigned null values (-32676).Baffin Bay has nine 7.5 minute DEMs and a single one degree DEM. The1 degree DEMs were generated from the higher resolution 7.5 minuteDEMs which covered the estuary. A Digital Elevation Model (DEM)contains a series of elevations ordered from south to north with theorder of the columns from west to east. The DEM is formatted as oneASCII header record (A- record), followed by a series of profilerecords (B- records) each of which include a short B-record headerfollowed by a series of ASCII integer elevations (typically in unitsof 1 centimeter) per each profile. The last physical record of theDEM is an accuracy record (C-record).The 7.5-minute DEM (30- by 30-m data spacing) is cast on theUniversal Transverse Mercator (UTM) projection. It provides coveragein 7.5- by 7.5-minute blocks. Each product provides the samecoverage as a standard USGS 7.5-minute quadrangle but the DEMcontains over edge data. Coverage is available for many estuaries ofthe contiguous United States but is not complete.

NASA's future space science missions cannot be realized without the state of the art high temperature insulation materials of which higher working temperature, high reliability, and low cost are highly desired. T/J Technologies proposes to develop a high temperature, durable, readily processable electrical insulation materials. The key element of our approach is the development and demonstration, in a breadboard configuration, the feasibility of a new high temperature polymeric composite material based on organic-inorganic nanocomposites with tailored structure and composition that will dramatically increase the Glass Transition Temperature and working temperature of the host polymer, polyimides. Future work of this proposed research, during phase II, will be mainly focused on developing all the associated technologies. The development of high working temperature, durable, radiation resistant electrical insulation materials is important for on-board propulsion and power systems for manned and unmanned deep space missions within NASA as well as electrical and microelectronic industries for applications such as capacitors, electric motors, circuit-printing films, semiconductor coating, etc.

Daily maximum and minimum temperatures for 25 stations around the Great Lakes, 1897 to 1983, were given to NSIDC by the NOAA Great Lakes Environmental Research Laboratory (GLERL), Ann Arbor, MI. Daily data can be used to produce daily maximum, minimum and mean temperatures, and seasonal accumulations of freezing and thawing degree days. The statistical data are archived on 25 reels of 35 mm microfilm, one roll per station. Microfilm rolls are the appendices to Assel (1980), with updates covering 1978 to 1983 spliced to the end of each microfilm roll. Description

The smthk_f grid represents the modeled combined thickness of the Saddle Mountains Basalt and Mabton interbed geomodel units at a 500 foot resolution. It is one grid of a geomodel that consists of eleven grids and a spatial extent polygon shapefile. As part of a U.S. Geological Survey Groundwater Resources Program study, a three-dimensional geomodel was constructed for approximately 53,000 mi2 of the Columbia Plateau in Washington, Oregon, and Idaho. This geomodel was constructed to define the general aquifer system geometry for use in a regional numerical groundwater flow model. Simplifications and assumptions consistent with this ultimate goal and the uncertainty in the available data were made. The geomodel units consist of Miocene age Columbia River Basalt Group strata and younger alluvial overburden covering approximately 44,000 mi2. Data were compiled from numerous databases and detailed studies completed during the past three decades. These data include stratigraphic interpretations made on more than 13,000 wells and a contiguous compilation of surficial geology and structural features spanning the study area. These data were simplified and used to construct piecewise-smooth trend surfaces that represent upper and lower subsurface geomodel unit boundaries in this complex folded and faulted terrain. The smoothness of the surfaces implicitly represents uncertainty in prediction of each surface resulting from data gaps, errors in borehole interpretations, errors in mapped contact locations, and uncertainty in the shape of the paleo-surface upon which flood basalts were emplaced. Using a rule-based algorithm, surfaces were then recombined to construct a fully three-dimensional model with a 500-foot grid resolution that is consistent with the data and for which error estimates may be made. The modeling process yielded improved estimates of unit volumes, refinement of location of large structural features, and identification of features that may be important for ongoing groundwater studies.

SWFWMD regularly uses digital topographic information to support regulatory, land management and acquisition, planning, engineering and habitat restoration projects. LiDAR data will support hydrologic modeling activities associated with the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), and in the creation of Digital Flood Insurance Rate Maps(DFIRM). The LiDAR data will support the creation of Federal Emergency Management Agency Flood Insurance Rate Maps (FEMA FIRM) and an integrated ground and surface water model for Hillsborough County. The data were classified into 7 classifications; (1) unclassified, (2) ground, (6) buildings, (9) water, (11) wetlands (reclassed by OCM to 16), (12) overlap points, (23) reserved for ASPRS definition (reclassed by OCM to 15), (30) reserved for ASPRS definition, and (31) reserved for ASPRS definition (reclassed by OCM to 10). Cooner & Associates performed the vertical accuracy and horizontal accuracy QA/QC analysis.
