Description

Between 2000 and 2005, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service Service and partners conducted an investigation of avian vacuolar myelinopathy AVM, an unusual neurological disease which has killed more than 100 bald eagles Haliaeetus leucocephalus since and thousands of coots Fulica americana wintering in Arkansas, Georgia, North Carolina, and South Carolina. By light microscopy, affected birds show diffuse, spongy degeneration of central nervous system white matter; by electron microscopy, the lesion is characterized as vacuoles formed in the myelin sheaths. The study was conducted to elucidate the etiology of AVM with a focus on 1 pathway identification through field and lab trials to reproduce the disease; and 2 toxicant identification through chemical analyses of birds and other media at affected and unaffected sites. Lake Surf also known as Woodlake, North Carolina, was the site for most of the work. We posed these specific study questions to address aspects of the disease not understood in 2000: Do birds arrive with the disease upon migration or get sick upon arrival? When is disease onset and what is its duration? Do birds with AVM always die, or can they recover? What at the lakes with AVMaffected birds might be causing the disease? Components of the study have been summarized in five peer reviewed publications and these papers provide detailed methods and study results. Some key findings include: Exposure to the causative agent of AVM is sitespecific birds get the disease locally, Exposure to the causative agent is seasonal, autumn to early winter; onset of disease can be rapid, within as little as 5 days postexposure; mallards Anas platyrhynchos can be effectively used as sentinels to monitor the disease; the severity of clinical signs does not appear closely linked with the severity of brain lesions; some birds with no clinical signs had lesions described as severe and several birds with obvious neurologic impairment had brain lesions described as mild; clinicallyaffected birds could regain function with supportive veterinary care; AVM was not transmitted by direct contact between affected birds and healthy birds; feeding studies were inconclusive although others have since experimentally reproduced the disease through feeding; and neither the sediments nor tissues analyzed show any compounds that are present in all of AVM positive lakes but not present or of low abundance in AVM negative lakes This study and others have not defined a specific cause. Currently, the cause is thought to be a naturally produced toxin associated with something in or on aquatic plants at the affected sites. Results of our study have been routinely cited in the work of others, indicating that the cooperative assessment provided advances in understanding of the disease.

Description

This dataset consists of video transect images (TIF files) from CRAMP surveys taken in 2000 at 23 sites, some of which had multiple depths. Estimates of substrate type, rugosity, species type, and percent coverage were provided to the NOAA data system within a separate data set. The video images are important for future researchers to resolve any question about how the image data were interpreted for the quantitative database, to provide the opportunity to re-analyze the images using other methods, and to return to the same locations for future comparisons.

Data granules contain approximately 23 minutes (1/4 orbit) and include the surface elevation, surface roughness assuming no slope, surface slope assuming no roughness and geodetic and atmospheric corrections for the range at the full 40/sec resolution. (Suggested Usage: Scientists investigating surface elevation, slope, reflection, and other surface characteristics can use the GLAH06 data. The data values were used in the creation of the surface-specific altimeter products (GLAH12-15). Each GLAH06 file was created from an equivalent GLA06 binary formatted file. Users that want to access the data used to create the GLAH06 values can use the equivalent GLAHxx files for the GLAxx files as shown in the provenance metadata for the history that created the GLA06.)

Description

Observational reports of daily snow fall (1200 UTC to 1200 UTC) are made by members of the NWS Automated Surface Observing Systems (ASOS) network and NWS Cooperative Observer Network (COOP). Reports from approximately 2,000 stations across the US including Alaska and Hawaii are sent on a daily basis to the Climate Prediction Center (CPC).CPC processes these reports once per day. All reports for the same day are put into an ASCII text file whose name includes the date of observation. These data are used by CPC in its role of supporting the Joint Agricultural Weather Facility (JAWF).

Description

These files contain topographic and bathymetric lidar data collected by the HawkEye system along the coast of Alabama and the gulf coast of Florida. The data were collected January - March 2010. The area of coverage includes the coastline in Baldwin and Mobile Counties in Alabama and the following Florida counties: Bay, Escambia, Franklin, Gulf, Okaloosa, Santa Rosa, and Walton. HawkEye integrates topographic and bathymetric lidar sensors with a digital camera on a single remote sensing platform for use in coastal mapping and charting activities. The topographic lidar sensor has a pulse repetition rate of 64 kHZ at 1064 nm (red wavelength). The bathymetric lidar sensor has a pulse repetition rate of 4 kHz at 532 nm (green wavelength). Native lidar data is not generally in a format accessible to most GIS systems. Specialized in-house and commercial software packages are used to process the native lidar data into 3-D positions that can be imported into GIS software for visualization and further analysis. The data were provided to NOAA CSC in decimal degrees of latitude and longitude, referenced to the NAD83 ellipsoid and in meters. The National Geodetic Survey's (NGS) GEOID03 model was used to transform the vertical positions from ellipsoid to orthometric heights referenced to the North American Vertical Datum of 1988 (NAVD88). The format of the file was LAS version 1.0. For data storage and Digital Coast provisioning purposes, NOAA CSC converted the orthometric heights (NAVD88) back to ellipsoidal heights using GEOID03.

Description

The NEFSC bottom trawl survey is a fisheries independent, multi-species survey that provides the primary scientific data for fisheries assessments in the U.S. mid-Atlantic and New England regions. Two bottom trawl surveys are conducted each year, one in the spring and one in the autumn. The survey is a standardized, stratified random design, with stratification based on bathymetry and multiple trawl sites within each stratum. Trawl sites are selected randomly, but the overall ship path is south to north. The survey covers the continental shelf and U.S. exclusive economic zone (EEZ) from Cape Hatteras, North Carolina into the Canadian EEZ. The primary gear is a bottom trawl, with CTD, multifrequency echosounder, and a host of other scientific sensor data collected ancillary to the bottom trawl catches.

The TIGER/Line shapefiles and related database files (.dbf) are an extract of selected geographic and cartographic information from the U.S. Census Bureau's Master Address File / Topologically Integrated Geographic Encoding and Referencing (MAF/TIGER) Database (MTDB). The MTDB represents a seamless national file with no overlaps or gaps between parts, however, each TIGER/Line shapefile is designed to stand alone as an independent data set, or they can be combined to cover the entire nation. American Indian tribal subdivisions are administrative subdivisions of federally recognized American Indian reservations/off-reservation trust lands or Oklahoma tribal statistical areas (OTSAs). These entities are internal units of self-government and/or administration that serve social, cultural, and/or economic purposes for the American Indian tribe or tribes on the reservations/off-reservation trust lands or OTSAs. The Census Bureau obtains the boundary and attribute information for tribal subdivisions on federally recognized American Indian reservations and off-reservation trust lands from federally recognized tribal governments through the Census Bureau's Boundary and Annexation Survey (BAS). For the 2010 Census, the boundaries for tribal subdivisions on OTSAs were also obtained from federally recognized tribal governments through the Tribal Statistical Areas Program (TSAP). Note that tribal subdivisions do not exist on all reservations/off-reservation trust lands or OTSAs, rather only where they were submitted to the Census Bureau by the federally recognized tribal government for that area. The boundaries for American Indian tribal subdivisions are as of January 1, 2013, as reported by the federally recognized tribal governments through the Census Bureau's Boundary and Annexation Survey (BAS). The boundaries for tribal subdivisions on OTSAs are those reported as of January 1, 2010 through TSAP.

Description

NOAA's National Geophysical Data Center (NGDC) is building high-resolution digital elevation models (DEMs) for select U.S. coastal regions in the Gulf of Mexico. These integrated bathymetric-topographic DEMs were developed for NOAA Coastal Survey Development Laboratory (CSDL) through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) of 2009 to evaluate the utility of the Vertical Datum Transformation tool (VDatum), developed jointly by NOAA's Office of Coast Survey (OCS), National Geodetic Survey (NGS), and Center for Operational Oceanographic Products and Services (CO-OPS). Bathymetric, topographic, and shoreline data used in DEM compilation are obtained from various sources, including NGDC, the U.S. Coastal Services Center (CSC), the U.S. Office of Coast Survey (OCS), the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE), and other federal, state, and local government agencies, academic institutions, and private companies. DEMs are referenced to the vertical tidal datum of North American Vertical Datum of 1988 (NAVD 88), Mean High Water (MHW) or Mean Lower Low Water (MLLW) and horizontal datum of North American Datum of 1983 (NAD 83). Cell size ranges from 1/3 arc-second (~10 meters) to 1 arc-second (~30 meters). The NOAA VDatum DEM Project was funded by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) of 2009 (http://www.recovery.gov/).

Description

DFW collects `trip ticket? or `purchase invoice? data from vendors that buy fish directly from the fishermen. Similar to other trip ticket invoice systems, except that compliance is voluntary and invoices are only provided to dealers, hotel, stores, fish mobiles etc. on the island of Saipan. Participation has deteriorated in recent years as the economy has suffered and businesses have failed and struggled to stay in existence. DFW has always run the system and have efforts underway to improve compliance and actually make such commercial vendor reporting mandatory through local legislation (although this has been tried in the past and failed). Data are collected by vendor and may include a fishermen?s identity (or not) and include number of pieces, weight, and price for some individual species and some species groups. Data exist back to about 1983 and are continuing, although the relative coverage of the fisheries has varied over the time series. These data are considered highly confidential.
