Description

The NASA commitment to a human presence in space exploration results in the interaction of humans with challenging environments in space, on lunar, and on planetary bodies. Meeting these challenges requires the development of technologies that will support human system interaction by integrating monitoring, feedback and situational awareness across all types of mission parameters and observables. A successful human system interaction (HSI) system could extend based on existing agent frameworks and software architectures in which NASA is interested. Our proposed approach enables the design of embedded protocols for human-agent interactions to support crew health, safety, and cognitive load modeling in the context of supporting plan execution as well as overall mission goals and activities. Particularly, our proposed HSI framework consists of various types of agents (including sensing and situational awareness abilities, etc.), a suite of HSI protocols for delegation, adjustable autonomy, situational awareness, HSI and mission-oriented coordination, and the integration of the proposed framework with existing systems to assist mission task operations by providing previously hard to observe, yet vital dynamic information, e.g. human health conditions. Our innovation is an agent-based integrated framework for modeling, simulation and implementation of context and mission aware human-system interaction protocols and interfaces.

Description

Crossfield is proposing to develop a low cost, single chip plant bio-monitor using an embedded MEMs based infrared (IR) spectroscopy gas sensor for carbon dioxide and oxygen sensing, a temperature sensor, a visible light sensor, and a MEMs based soil moisture sensor. In addition, the signal conditioning, A/D converter, and processor will be implemented on the same monolithic chip, providing NASA with a smart biosensor chip for monitoring and data logging plant life environmental stress. A second, commercially available chip will provide a wireless interconnect to a remote monitoring station, enabling any suitably equipped computer, such as a laptop or a fixed display station to monitor the condition of a networked array of such sensors. The MEMs sensors are innovative Crossfield designs and the small, two-chip Wireless BioSensor is sufficiently low power to enable indefinite life time by energy scavenging from the environment. Under Phase I, the system will be demonstrated using analysis, simulation, and a demonstration breadboard of key elements. The monolithic sensor will be fully developed under a Phase II effort.

Iraqi upper air records loaned to NCDC from the Air Force 14th Weather Squadron. Scanned notebooks containing upper air radiosonde launch records and data. Launches were conduced by the Iraqi Meteorological Department. Most textual information is in Arabic. Records were collected by the United States Air Force and used as reference for flights during Operation Desert Storm in 1990-1993. Each notebook is scanned into a single file, spanning two to 12 months. Period of record is 1958-1989

Description

Communities near airports are often exposed to high noise levels due to low flying aircraft in the takeoff and landing phases of flight. Propulsion source noise is the major contributor to the overall noise level. The noise generation mechanisms for a typical turbofan engine are complicated, which makes it a significant challenge to identify the noise sources. Each engine component, such as fan, compressor and turbine, can generate both broadband and narrowband noise. Particularly, the fan noise, more specifically the interaction of the rotor with the downstream stator, is important due to the trend towards the development of civil aircraft turbofan engines with higher and higher by pass ratios. Nearfield acoustical holography (NAH) refers to a process by which the noise sources and the resulting sound field can be reconstructed based on sound pressure measurements taken on a surface in the neighborhood of these sources. Thus, the development and application of appropriate generalized acoustical holography (GAH) system by extending NAH to handle arbitrary geometry and complex noise sources, novel measurement and data processing methods, and innovative inversion and regularization techniques will conceptually allow the identification and ranking of complex turbomachinery noise sources that are otherwise difficult to characterize. This system will also enable the use of more effective active and/or passive noise control measures by providing useful information that is impossible to obtain by direct measurements.

Description

The Digital Flood Insurance Rate Map (DFIRM) Database depicts flood risk information and supporting data used to develop the risk data. The primary risk classifications used are the 1-percent-annual-chance flood event, the 0.2-percent-annual- chance flood event, and areas of minimal flood risk. The DFIRM Database is derived from Flood Insurance Studies (FISs), previously published Flood Insurance Rate Maps (FIRMs), flood hazard analyses performed in support of the FISs and FIRMs, and new mapping data, where available. The FISs and FIRMs are published by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). In addition to the preceding, required text, the Abstract should also describe the projection and coordinate system as well as a general statement about horizontal accuracy.

These raster data of the thickness of the Chinle formation in the Upper Colorado River Basin (UCRB) were created for the purpose of developing a generalized predevelopment groundwater flow model of the Mesozoic and Paleozoic aquifers in the Upper Colorado River Basin and use that model along with a few recharge estimates to estimate water budgets for the aquifers including associated groundwater contributions to the Colorado River surface water system. The modeling exercise also explored considerations for development of a more detailed groundwater flow model that would include all of the major aquifers in the Upper Colorado River Basin.

Description

Current nuclear fusion efforts have focused on the generation of electric grid power and are wholly inappropriate for space transportation as the application of a reactor based fusion-electric system creates a colossal mass and heat rejection problem for space application. The Fusion Driven rocket (FDR) represents a revolutionary approach to fusion propulsion where the power source releases its energy directly into the propellant, not requiring conversion to electricity. It employs a solid lithium propellant that requires no significant tankage mass. The propellant is rapidly heated and accelerated to high exhaust velocity (> 30 km/s), while having no significant physical interaction with the spacecraft thereby avoiding damage to the rocket and limiting both the thermal heat load and radiator mass.
