<p><strong>Software for processing time series of satellite remote sensing data was packaged together with a computer code that uses web services to download the data sets from a NASA data archive and distribution system. The new application package was able to be quickly deployed on a cloud computing platform when, and <em>only for as long as</em>, processing of the time series data is required to support emergency response. Fast network connection between the cloud system and the data archive enabled remote processing of the satellite data without the need for downloading the input data to a local computer system: only the output data products are transferred for further analysis.</strong></p><p><strong>NASA was a pioneer in cloud computing by having established its own private cloud computing data center called Nebula in 2009 at the Ames Research Center (Ames). Nebula provided high-capacity computing and data storage services to NASA Centers, Mission Directorates, and external customers. In 2012, NASA shut down Nebula based on the results of a 5-month test that benchmarked Nebula’s capabilities against those of Amazon and Microsoft. The test found that public clouds were more reliable and cost effective and offered much greater computing capacity and better IT support services than Nebula.</strong></p>

Description

This inventory was commissioned by the U.S. Air Force to identify the location and condition of extant remnant Atlantic white cedar groves and stands in North Carolina, and to compare those sites with remnant sites on the Dare County Bombing Range. As such, it is a comprehensive description of the remnant Atlantic white cedar resource rather than a standard forest inventory that focuses on volumes and stocking. For each site visited, the authors gathered data on location, ownership, stand condition and composition, soils, past disturbances where known, and natural community types. To identify site locations, records of known remnant AWC sites were compiled from Dare County Range files and N.C. Natural Heritage Program NHP Element Occurrence files and from knowledgeable individuals representing public agencies, timber companies, conservation organizations, and private landowners. Aerial photographs obtained from U.S. Department o f Agriculture offices were studied to identify potential additional sites in approximately 35 counties. Numerous AWC sites were discovered during aerial and ground inspection of known locations.

Redondo Optics Inc. (ROI), proposes to develop, demonstrate, and deliver to NASA an intrinsically safe, miniature, low power, autonomous, and self-calibrated, respiratory health monitor (ResHealthTM) system for monitoring of the oronasal activity associated with respiratory activity during extravehicular activity (EVA) sorties on Lunar surface exploration. In Phase I of this program, ROI will conclusively demonstrate the concept of the ResHealthTM monitoring device by extensively testing a conceptual prototype of a multi-sensor array microchip and optoelectronic sensor readout unit capable of detecting, analyzing, and separating vital respiratory activity signatures associated with inspiratory and expiratory air flow. In Phase II, ROI will integrate the ResHealthTM monitoring device into a field deployable autonomous unit and installed and qualified on a spacesuit PLSS system at a selected NASA test site and delivered to NASA for performance validation. The ResHealthTM system's wireless communication mode offers true Tele-medicine capabilities to communicate remotely its sensor status and alarm condition to the crewmember EMU computer control and communications system, to other close proximity crewmembers, lunar habitat stations, and to flight doctors in the Mission Control Center. No other available commercial device on the market today offers such capabilities at an affordable cost.

Description

Cryogenic fluid management (CFM) is a critical technical area that is needed for the successful development for future space exploration. A key challenge is the storability of LH2, LCH4, and LOX propellants for long durations. The storage tanks must be well insulated to prevent over pressurization and venting, which lead to unacceptable propellant losses for long-duration missions to Mars and beyond. Aspen Aerogels validated the key process step for a next generation aerogel manufacturing technology to enable the fabrication of thin, low density aerogel materials. Multi-Layer Aerogel Insulation (MLAI) system prototypes were prepared using sheets of these aerogel materials that have superior thermal performance exceeding that of the current state of the art insulation for space application, MLI, across the vacuum range tested (0.01 – 100 millitorr). The exceptional properties of this system include a new breakthrough in high vacuum cryogenic thermal insulation, providing a durable material with excellent thermal performance at a reduced cost when compared to longstanding state-of-the-art MLI systems. During the Phase II Program, further refinement and qualification/system-level testing of the MLAI system will be performed for use in cryogenic storage applications.

The Global Historical Climatology Network Monthly (GHCN-M) Version 2 dataset created by the NCDC contains historical temperature, precipitation, and pressure data for thousands of land stations worldwide. The period of record varies from station to station, with several thousand extending back to 1950 and several hundred being updated monthly. Both historical and near-real-time GHCN-M data undergo rigorous quality assurance reviews. These reviews include pre-processing checks on source data, time series checks that identify spurious changes in the mean and variance, spatial comparisons that verify the accuracy of the climatological mean and the seasonal cycle, and neighbor checks that identify outliers from both a temporal and a spatial perspective.

Description

Numbers of bald eagles Haliaeetus leucocephalus nesting along the lower Columbia River have doubled in the last six years, yet fiveyear running productivity averages are well below statewide values for eagles nesting in other areas of Oregon and Washington. While productivity of eagles along the Columbia River is low, nesting success in other areas of the two states is close to the goals established to delist the species from the Federal Endangered Species list. Previous contaminant studies conducted from 1985 to 1987 along the river found poor productivity associated with elevated DDE dichlorodiphenyldichloroethane and total polychlorinated biphenyls PCBs in eagle eggs. In addition, 2,3,7,8tetrachlorodibenzopdioxin TCDD and 2,3,7,8tetrachlorodibenzofuran TCDF concentrations were found in five eggs collected in 1987 and 1991. From 199495, fresh bald eagle eggs were collected from nests in 19 of 43 occupied territories along the river. Eggshell thickness was determined on all eggs, and the contents were analyzed for organochlorine pesticides, total PCBs, polychlorinated dibenzopdioxins PCDDs, polychlorinated dibenzofurans PCDFs, and planar PCBs nonortho and monoortho substituted congeners. Halogenated dioxinlike compounds in eggs were also evaluated based on a H4IIE rat hepatoma bioassay. Productivity and egg contaminant results from l 994 to 1995 were compared to a previous study to evaluate changes over time. Recent increases in productivity averages were due to new pairs nesting along the river, yet productivity at 23 older breeding areas remained low and was not different P0.713 between the two study periods. Eggshells averaged 11 percent thinner than shells measured prior to the use of the pesticide DDT dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane, and thickness of eggs from older breeding territories had not improved P0.404 between the two study periods. Decreases in p,pDDE P0.022 and total PCBs P 0.0004 in eggs from older breeding areas occurred between the two study periods, but concentrations were still above values associated with poor productivity. TCDD toxic equivalents TEQs exceeded estimated noeffect values for bald eagles during both studies. Bald eagle productivity over a fiveyear time period encompassing egg collection was not correlated to individual organochlorine compounds. Some dioxins, furans, planar PCBs, and TEQ values were correlated to nest location as river mile, with highest concentrations occurring at downriver breeding territories near the mouth. Although total productivity has increased due to the success of new nesting pairs moving into the region, results indicate that organochlorine contaminants continue to impact the breeding success of lower Columbia River eagles. The greatest impact of appears to occur at older breeding territories, which were located predominantly in the lower estuary below river mile 60. Eagles nesting toward the mouth of the river may be at greater risk of exposure to some dioxinlike compounds, and the reproductive success of some new pairs nesting in this area could be impacted in the future.

Description

The Home Based Primary Care (HBPC) database receives and compiles data from local Hospital Based Home Care (HBHC) sanctioned programs at Veterans Affairs Medical Centers (VAMCs) that run home care programs under the Home Based Primary Care program. The primary purpose is to provide HBPC management with case mix, case load, and other performance information. The HBPC information system is referred to as HBC at the VA Austin Information Technology Center and as HBHC at the local level. The HBHC automated a paper-based system of reporting home care episodes. When an admission form is completed, an episode is opened and input into HBHC for a potential home care patient. The patient is evaluated and accepted to or rejected from the program. When a patient leaves the program for any reason an episode is closed and a discharge form completed and input into HBHC. HBHC runs a nightly extract of information within the Veterans Health Information Systems and Technology Architecture. Extractions include information on all Patient Care Encounters (PCEs) with the patient and home visits made by home care providers. Details of which provider(s) made the visit, the date, any diagnosis and any procedures performed are included. Each local application sends its data to the Austin HBC database on a monthly basis. A monthly report is prepared based on this information identifying the active cases at each VAMC. A more detailed quarterly report is produced that includes national comparisons among sites.

Description

Many scientific questions and policy issues related to sediments in Long Island Sound require data of historical, regional and interdisciplinary scope. Existent data is often geographically clustered and its references are widely dispersed and not always accessible. Acquisition of new data is expensive and may duplicate previous efforts if a full interpretation of existent data has not occurred. Consequently, the body of existing data needs to be utilized to its maximum so that it can serve as a foundation, baseline, and starting point for further work. An accessible, documented, and simple-to-use compilation of existing data on sediment properties is essential for environmental managers, policy-makers, scientific researchers, and interested members of the public. To this end, we have compiled, edited, and integrated all of the available data on sediment texture and bottom descriptions throughout the Sound in order to produce a regional dataset which will be available to a wide variety of current and potential users. The significant feature of this textural dataset is that it comprehensively contains original data from many heterogeneous sources.
