Description

No sign of Arctic foxes were found on any of the islands. Te presence of glaucous winged gulls nesting abundantly on the slopes of Davidof and Khvostof Islands is a priori evidence that foxes do not occur. Davidof and Khvostof are not suitable for release of Aleutian Canada geese due to small size and lack of suitable nesting sites. Suitability of Little Kiska is difficult to evaluate. A total of 22 species of birds was recorded during the survey of the islands, 14 on Davidof, 7 on Pyramid, 10 on Khvostof, and 14 on Little 4 Kiska.

Description

Nesting success through lateincubation for cackling Canada, emperor, whitefronted geese and black brant was exceptionally high in 1987 with all species averaging above 90 success. Clutch sizes were average. Chronology of arrival, nest initiation and hatch was normal or perhaps 1 or 2 days earlier than the long term average. Reduction of arctic fox by trapping seemed to ensure high nest success at three of four study sites. Analysis of data from 85 random plots searched along with 45 other plots provided estimates that 22,000 cackling Canada, 21,000 emperor, and 9,000 whitefronted goose nests were present on the 1,800 square miles of coastal habitat that contains about 90 of the total geese of the YK Delta.

Description

Goose drive trapping and banding was successfully conducted in the Galena and North Slope areas of Alaska in 1978. This was the fourth year of a five consecutive year banding program to band whitefronted geese in their major production areas in Alaska. Although whitefronted geese were our prime target species, substantial numbers of black brant and lesser Canada geese were banded in addition to whitefronts. The banding crew was comprised of U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service migratory bird personnel from Juneau and Anchorage along with a representative from the Central Flyway. Methods, results, and recommendations are provided in this report.

Description

This report covers the whistling swan dyeing program on Malheur National Wildlife Refuge, in the fall of 1961 to trap birds which, owing to the absence of food in Malheur Lake and low water conditions resulting from three consecutive years of drought, began coming in to feed on grain placed for pinioned birds in the display pool. Attached are a table listing observation data and a map showing sites where observations were made. The map depicts site only and approximate dates for observations in the United States and southern Canada. In some places, notably near Sacramento, Tulelake, Malheur Lake, and Flathead Lake, there were a number of observations too close to be clearly shown.

Description

This report summarizes the results of a modeling workshop concerning development of the Beluga coal resource in Alaska. The workshop was facilitated by the AEA Group of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and attended by approximately 35 invited participants representing private industry, government agencies, Native peoples, and private interest groups. During the workshop, participants completed a series of structured exercises designed to identify major system components and their interactions. Discussions focusing on these interrelationships were used as a means of identifying areas where additional information, communication, and understanding are necessary.
