Under Phase 1 of subject SBIR, Air-Lock, Incorporated will design a self donning and doffing Rear Entry Hard Upper Torso (REHUT) that interfaces with a suit port. This design will allow suited, pressurized crewmembers to mate/demate their suits to/from suit ports located on lunar or planetary habitats, rovers, etc. This is a significant activity because it minimizes concerns over dust entering the habitat during crewmember entry/exit and it maximizes the habitat's working volume by eliminating the need for airlocks. For the purpose of this SBIR, the baseline architecture being will focus on NASA JSC's MK-III advanced spacesuit and the suit port being utilized by the Lunar Electirc Rover (LER).

Description

The GPM Ground Validation Dual Polarization Radiometer GCPEx dataset provides brightness temperature measurements at frequencies 90 GHz (not polarized) and 150 GHz (HV-polarized) for the GPM Cold-season Precipitation Experiment (GCPEx) which occurred in Ontario, Canada, during January and February 2012. This Dual polarization radiometer (DPR) is sensitive to particle orientation since it observes the brightness temperature difference between the vertical and horizontal polarization channels at 150 GHz, and it is especially important for the retrievals of particle shape and orientation with polarization observations. DPR also has a high sensitivity to the supercooled liquid water in clouds due to the high-frequency window channels. Even though the netCDF data has regular scans, the browse is only shown at 30 and 150 degrees. Ancillary data is captured for the internal calibration of the instrument.

Description

This SBIR Phase I effort proposes to establish the feasibility of leveraging advances in compact laser technology with integration of space qualified techniques into AdvR's Planar Lightwave Circuit (PLC) and iodine reference cell technology for the design of a space qualifiable, frequency stabilized seed laser system in support of NASA Langley's High Spectral Resolution Lidar (HSRL) program. The Phase II effort will focus on space qualifiable systems integration, packaging, and testing of the locked seed laser system under applicable environmental conditions. Successful development of this technology, due to its compact, efficient, and reliable design, will enable further uses of the HSRL-based remote sensing system both in current flight-based systems and in future space-based systems.

Description

The purpose of this Phase I NASA SBIR program is to develop high performance multifunctional nanostructured materials that can be used to fabricate icephobic multifunctional appliqus with enhanced erosion resistance for rotorcraft leading edges. The proposed technology offers integrated multifunctionality that results in reduction of weight, system complexity, maintenance, and cost over current systems. Prevention of ice buildup will facilitate mission critical operations in icing conditions, as well as mitigate concerns of vibration transmission and shudder that are associated with ice buildup. Integration of additional erosion resistant composites may also result in reduced maintenance costs. Electrothermal systems are currently used for anti-icing systems in rotorcraft, but are prone to failure due to system complexity. To mitigate the problems associated with current anti-icing systems, NanoSonic proposes to develop multifunctional adhesive backed appliqus with integrated hydrophobicity and enhanced erosion resistance. High performance tapes are currently applied to rotorcraft leading edges to help improve erosion resistance. Integrating multiple functionalities into a high performance nanocomposite appliqu would result in reduction of weight and system complexity, facilitate operation in icing conditions, and reduce maintenance on the rotorblades. For minimal maintenance and application cost, a new appliqu can be readily placed on the rotorblade leading edge when the existing appliqu has exhausted its functionality.

Description

This Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) and Normalized Difference Water Index (NDWI) data set was developed from Landsat 5 Thematic Mapper (TM) data for use in studying land cover features during the Soil Moisture Experiment 2003 (SMEX03). Data acquired on 20 July 2003 were used to create large-scale maps of the NDVI and NDWI for both northern and southern Georgia, USA regional study areas in order to accurately estimate the surface soil moisture via microwave remote sensing. These data are uncorrected for the atmosphere and should not be compared to long term data records of vegetation. Data are in flat, four-byte binary format and are available via FTP. These data were collected as part of a validation study for the Advanced Microwave Scanning Radiometer - Earth Observing System (AMSR-E). AMSR-E is a mission instrument launched aboard NASA's Aqua Satellite on 04 May 2002. AMSR-E validation studies linked to SMEX are designed to evaluate the accuracy of AMSR-E soil moisture data. Specific validation objectives include assessing and refining soil moisture algorithm performance; verifying soil moisture estimation accuracy; investigating the effects of vegetation, surface temperature, topography, and soil texture on soil moisture accuracy; and determining the regions that are useful for AMSR-E soil moisture measurements.

Description

NEI Corporation proposes to develop a mixed metal oxide nanocomposite cathode that is designed for delivering high energy density with good rate performance at low temperatures (T=0 C). The two-fold innovation in the proposed effort is the simultaneous intrinsic (i.e. defect chemistry) and extrinsic (electrically conductive surface coating) modification to the active material, which itself is a composite of two layered materials. The proposed intrinsic and extrinsic modifications are projected to beneficially impact both ionic and electronic conductivities of the cathode material, and thereby enhance the Li-ion cell performance at low operating temperatures. The target specific capacity of the proposed cathode is more than 300 mAh/g with a nominal working voltage of 3V, and delivering more than 900 Wh/kg specific energy at T=0 C. The objective of the Phase I program is to demonstrate the feasibility of a new high capacity and high voltage cathode material for rechargeable Li-ion batteries. In Phase II, the composition and morphology of the powders will be optimized, and integrated into large format prototype Li-ion batteries by working in partnership with a battery manufacturer(s).

Description

This project is focusing on the strategic, routine incorporation of medium-resolution satellite imagery into operational agricultural assessments for the global crop market. Automated algorithms for rapid extraction of field-level crop area statistics from Landsat and Landsat-class imagery (including Landsat 5 TM, Landsat 7 ETM+, AWiFS, ASTER, SPOT, LDCM, etc.) are under development. For prototype development, the project is collaborating with the Production Estimates and Crop Assessment Division of the USDA Foreign Agricultural Service. The Phase I prototype algorithms, based on Bayesian Probability Theory, incorporate multiple lines of evidence in the form of prior and conditional probabilities and implement an innovative approach to supervised image classification allowing for automated class delineation. The knowledge-based expert classifiers prototyped during Phase I were tested and validated at selected pilot sites across the globe. The results of the Phase I work have clearly demonstrated the technical feasibility of the GDA approach to automated crop area assessment with medium resolution imagery. Development undertaken during Phase I resulted in a robust, fully functional set of modules that are capable of processing large volumes of data and allow for accurate crop detection, area estimation, and crop acreage change assessment with minimal user intervention. The prototype algorithms were tested on a range of test sites, sensors, crop types, and crop conditions. A non-rigorous validation study proved the reliability and accuracy of the prototype algorithms. The overall results of the project will enhance global agricultural production estimates by improving the timeliness and accuracy of field-level crop area estimates.
