The Lower Souris Migratory Waterfowl Refuge now known as the J. Clark Salyer National Wildlife Refuge is located just south of the Canadian border in North Dakota. The refuge was established and constructed by the CCC in 1935 to restore waterfowl habitat. This report gives an overview of events taking place on the refuge during October of 1935. In this month the refuge made a large effort to collect and store seeds of grasses, trees and shrubs.

Summary
Description
The proposed study focuses on the effects of season of burn and time since burn on relative use of experimental areas by Scotts seaside sparrow A. m. peninsulae and on fuel reduction and vegetation structure. St. Vincent National Wildlife Refuge will be the primary study site with supplemental work conducted at St. Marks NWR.

Summary
Description
A total of 55 invertebrate samples were collected from July 1, 1974 to June 30, 1975. Two samples were toxic out of five analyzed. The four year contract for botulism research ended June 30, 1974 so collection of invertebrates on the Lower Klamath National Wildlife Refuge was limited to two trappings. The trapping resulted in collection of 50 samples kept for analysis. Approximately 25,000 birds died from botulism in California from July 1974June 1975. The purpose of this research project was to gain a better understanding of the life cycle of Clostridium botulinum type C as it pertains to waterfowl mortalities. Since current research has indicated invertebrates may play a significant role in botulism outbreaks invertebrates were collected from the Lower Klamath NWR and kept for testing for the presence of spores and toxin. Improved management and mortality control techniques were the ultimate goals of the project.

During the breeding season in 2001, the seaside sparrow population was surveyed in different fire treatment areas of Mallard Slough Marsh at St. Vincent NWR. The objective of the project was to survey for singing male seaside sparrows along an already established experimental study plot. It was observed that seaside sparrows used particular sites more than others and researchers are interested in determining if a similar pattern is evident in a followup second year study.

Aural surveys using tape recorded calls proved to be an efficient and effective way to survey large expanses of shallow marsh for black rails Laterallus jamaicensis. Approximately 28 to 31 rails were detected at 15 different sites in Florida in the spring and summer of 1989. We recommend further extensive surveys to determine current status and distribution of this elusive bird. If such surveys suggest an uncertain future for black rails and more detailed monitoring is deemed necessary, then detailed research will be needed to refine the call count method.
