Description

Surveys of breeding populations and nesting habitat of the snowy plover were conducted from January to August, 1989 along the Gulf Coast of Florida and Alabama. Conservative estimates based upon observations of adults, nests, and families of plovers indicate at least 167 breeding pairs of snowy plovers were in Florida in 1989. At least 30 more pair are predicted to have been present in Alabama and Mississippi, making an estimated total of 200 pairs along the eastern Gulf Coast. Nearly all nests were located where the level of human activity was relatively low. Public lands with long, undeveloped beaches contained the most nests; only 22 pairs of plovers were found in south Florida, where undeveloped stretches of beach are rare. Of 85 nests sampled, most were near the front dune mean distance 10.5 m and close to vegetation mean distance 1.4 m. Nests found after midsummer storms were more likely to be located in openings in the dune or behind the dunes. The fates of 83 nests were determined and 42 hatched. Storms, vehicles, predators, and humans accounted for the known causes of nest failure. More information about breeding biology, nesting success, and long term population trends is needed to assist in the conservation of snowy plovers. Immediately, continued and increased protection from human disturbance on public lands would be beneficial. In most areas, nesting success and the number of pairs present could be increased by reducing or altering vehicle traffic, concentrating human activities, and posting nesting areas against trespass.

Description

The white tailed deer herd on St. Vincent Island represents an important part of the islands biotic community. To maintain the integrity of the islands deer population, it is necessary to monitor various aspects of animals biology, its environmental and socioeconomic ramifications. While much of the information relating to deer is collected for other purposes, e.g. census should be part of the refuge wildlife inventory plan and hunting reported as part of public use, these procedures and record keeping systems are consolidated and incorporated as part of this program. This program has been designed primarily as a working tool for the refuge staff. The sections are separated for ease in revision when required.

Description

The project proposed this report will provide data on the habitats of the eastern black rail through the use of radio telemetry, vegetative samples, and weekly surveys using vocalization tapes. The eastern black rail Laterallus jamaicensis jamaicensis is among the most poorly known of the birds of Florida, hampering the potential for habitat manipulations to encourage the species. The proposed research will provide some of these data; with the objectives of determining habitat preferences of breeding eastern black rails on both the macrohabitat and microhabitat levels; determining home range size, changes in home range boundaries, and movements of eastern black rails during the breeding season; refining censusing techniques for eastern black rails; and determining general life history parameters of eastern black rails in Florida. The study will be conducted by a masterslevel graduate student. A study site will be selected at one of several state or federal wildlife areas with tidal marsh habitat in northern Florida. Black rails will be trapped, fitted with radio transmitters, and tracked from fixed tracking stations using a computer assisted tracking system. Tracking will follow a systematic weekly schedule to avoid potential problems with independence of telemetric fixes. A cover map of the study site will be prepared from aerial photos and ground survey and will be digitized using a CIS system to determine distribution of cover types. Telemetric fixes of black rails will be superimposed over the cover map using the CIS system to determine cover type selection. Vegetative and physical habitat variables will be sampled at randomly selected sites and at sites intensively used by rails to characterize microhabitat selection. Home range boundaries of telemetered rails will be determined using the harmonic mean method. Sizes of home ranges will be compared among different seasonal categories and between sexes. Boundaries will be plotted to determine overlap and seasonal shifts in home ranges. Weekly surveys will be conducted using vocalization tapes to determine optimal timing and effects of weather variables on call counts. Telemetered birds will be monitored to determine movements of birds in response to tapes and the proportion of birds responding to tapes. Morphology, weight changes, sex and age criteria, molt, nesting biology, and food habits of black rails will be determined opportunistically from trapped and telemetered birds. Possible study sites include St. Vincent, St. Johns, and St. Marks National Wildlife Refuges and the Big Bend Wildlife Management Area.

Description

From February 16 to May 6, 1988, sixteen largemouth bass, fifteen bluegill, and thirteen brown bullhead, were collected from three fresh water ponds at St. Vincent National Wildlife Refuge, Franklin County, Florida. Composite whole body samples of each species were analyzed for mercury and selenium. Mercury concentrations likely to be present in the edible portion fillet of these species were estimated from the wholebody value. Largemouth bass ranged in length from 197 to 460 mm 7.718.1 in.. Bluegill were from 145 to 240 mm 5.79.4 in. in length, and brown bullhead were 302 to 363 mm 11.914.3 in. long. Mercury concentrations in all species were below 0.25 mgkg wet weight, except for bluegill 0.27 in Oyster Pond. Selenium may, in some cases, mitigate the adverse biochemical andor physiological effects of mercury. Selenium has also been found to be toxic to wildlife in large amounts. Selenium concentrations in all composite samples were 0.2 mgkg, wet weight. Neither mercury nor selenium were found to occur at levels believed to be toxic to individual fish or human consumers. However, the mercury concentrations found in the fish may constitute some risk to predators that regularly consume them.
