Summary
Description
Bird surveys conducted at Beaufort Lagoon located along the northern periphery of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge from JuneSeptember 1970. The Lagoon area contains habitat and bird and animal life found on no other federally protected land. Migratory birds using the area include black brant, snow goose, common eider, king eider, spectacled eider, whitewinged scoter, surf scoter, common scoter, whistling swan Canada goose, whitefronted goose, pintail, and various other ducks, shorebirds, and waterbirds. The lagoon area consists of 16 avian habitat types modified from Kessel Cade, 1958. The major types include sedgegrass marsh, tussockheath tundra, tundrafreshwater pond or lake edge, river waters, lagoon, and the reef.

This report provides a detailed summary of the baseline wilderness character assessment completed for the Swanquarter National Wildlife Refuge Wilderness, located in North Carolina. The purpose of this report is multidimensional. It establishes a wilderness character monitoring program for the Swanquarter Wilderness and provides baseline data for future trend analysis. An understanding of the information in this report may also aid resource specialists by informing management decisions within the Swanquarter Wilderness. Finally, this report is meant to accompany and explain the quantitative results of Swanquarter wilderness character assessment that have been entered into a national wilderness character monitoring database. A total of 19 measures were used to assess the following: untrammeled quality, natural quality, undeveloped quality, and solitude or primitive and unconfined recreation quality.

Description
Marsh bird studies performed in 1997 were primarily a continuation of the basic population monitoring started in previous years. A complete census of known black tern nesting areas in Vermont was performed in order to continue tracking the status of this species which is listed as threatened in Vermont. In addition, the effort to develop a survey method for other nongame marsh birds such as bitterns and rails continued and was expanded. These activities together have two major objectives: to look at marsh bird population levels and changes in Vermont, and to investigate the effect of marsh vegetation changes on their numbers.
