Description

Numerous oil production facilities were in place when Quivira NWR was purchased, and oil production has continued and some new production facilities have been developed. Although concerned about possible effects of leakage or spillage at production or storage sites on the refuge, managers have had no assessment of possible petroleum contamination near oil production facilities. In 1989 sediment samples were collected to assess surficial petroleum contamination by analyzing for aliphatic and aromatic hydrocarbons. To gather additional background information about the refuge, the samples also were analyzed for organochlorine compounds and for metals. One past study examined selenium concentrations in wetlands on the refuge Allen and Wilson 1990. This study provides additional information about background levels of elements and compounds of possible concern at Quivira. Surficial sediment samples were collected at 10 wetlands near current or past oil production facilities. The samples were analyzed for aliphatic and aromatic hydrocarbons and for chlorinated hydrocarbon compounds.
